I got the R50 creators kit which comes with only the 18-45mm lens but ended up getting this 10-18 lens and it's much better for selfie vlogging and wide desk shots, it should come bundled with the camera!

Thanks for this. I wanted to like this lens more, since I need it so badly (what other choice do we have if we want a wide RF and still any IS or AF right?), but I have to agree with those below: it's only convinced me I can get my wide or ultra-wide angle footage on an iphone 11 for now and save the $$ till a better RF lens with these capabilities arrives.

Thank you! ❤ On a similar subject, I see that, in your video description, you are listing three lenses, including this 10-18mm. However, am I correct to say that I don't see a macro lens being listed? If so, can you point me to the right direction, please? Thanks a lot again 🙏

When this lens was released, it was one of three Canon lenses launched that day - all completely different uses and budgets. Not all RF-S lenses like this. There’s no dedicated RF-S macro lens currently, but you could consider the RF 85mm F2 lens Macro: www.wilkinson.co.uk/canon-rf-85mm-f-2-macro-is-stm-lens/ - would also make a lovely portrait option 😊

Is there any significant difference in performance compare to Ef-s 10-18 aside from the body size ?

The RF-S does yield better technically image quality than the EF-S version thanks to the entirely new design. We haven't tested side by side and couldn't have done with a pre-production model anyway, but the MFT charts do show improved image quality. I'm more about "real-world" use though than charts, so hopefully we can explore this in future. The size difference is the most obvious, particularly when it comes to fitting it in a bag or carrying as a second lens - it is remarkably smaller and also better balanced as a result, especially when you also factor in the fact you don't need a lens adapter on top. The RF-S version does have a smaller aperture at the 10mm end, so this is worth considering depending on what you shoot most. Personally, I'd go for an upgrade for the size and weight alone, but I fully understand being cautious if you already own the 10-18mm and don't want to spend money on a new lens of the same focal length! The video and some of the stills looked super grainy with that lens. How high did you have to bump up the ISO to compensate for the really dim max aperatures?

The video of the bikes at 3.39 looks poor quality mostly because it’s 1080 HD, but our review videos all go out in 4K and all other parts are filmed in 4K. Somehow when filming that I ended up filming it in HD (and I’ve still no idea how - probably because I was juggling 2 other cameras and lenses!) (edited) The vlogging section around 1.48 is also Full HD, scaled up to 4K. So you need to use these as examples of the angles that the lens shoots at, not the video quality that the camera recored at! If you let me know which pics stood out to you as grainy I can check the ISO and put some context behind them for you 😊

for me video is not better than smartphone quality in 1:48 and bikes are even worse

@@twistingstrings Some of the video was filmed in HD by mistake, so we've had to scale this up to 4K to match our B-roll footage. The video examples are to show you the angles the lens shoots at, we are not using them to demonstrate video quality from a camera (which can vary dramatically from model to model and with different settings, post-production, etc.). If this was a camera review then we'd go into details about the video specs. For this first look lens review, please just consider the angles the lens shoots at.
