Yeah, unfortunately, the “Jack the Hack” campaign was a very real thing. In fact, before his official return, editor-in-chief Roy Thomas-who HATED Jack’s DC stuff-told Stan that under NO circumstances should the man be allowed to write. That sentiment was also shared by some of the new blood who’d been inspired by the King's work but were now 1) jealous he was granted creative freedoms they didn’t have, and 2) resentful of the fact he wouldn't listen to their advice or let them write his books. Hence, a trolling campaign that included not just the selective printing of negative letters (some of which, it’s rumored, were written by staff) but derogatory notes and remarks and gossip circulated around the Marvel Bullpen, all meant to shame the dude who’d built their company into doing and seeing things their way. Eventually, after being met with skepticism and denial by the people in charge (which no doubt included Mr. Thomas-all hail the Houseroy, lol), Jack went to the one guy he knew best, Stan Lee. Say what you will about their relationship, Jack was given full control of his own letter columns after that…but the damage was done. Still, given how much of his ‘70s work is successfully being used by Marvel, and with an Eternals movie floating on the horizon, somewhere up above “Hack” Kirby is laughing his ass off.

The only hack at marvel was Lieber, that was sceaming off of the hard work of people like Steve and Jack. it's not a coincidence that there is such a thing like the 'marvel meathod' it's because Liebere is a PR man, not a creative bone in his body, saw that jack came up with galactus, silver surfer and the inhumans just because the story needed to go some way.. and took credit for everything. and the public STILL to this day believes that that snake really did came up with everything.. while he was just great at self promotion. nothing more or less.

Same. I was a kid in the 70s just starting out (and at that time hadn’t read his earlier work) and I remember I hated the Kirby look - all that weird machinery - and bought the cap books but they were not my favorites. Only many years later after having read the silver age did I learn to marvel at Kirby. And recently going back to these cap issues and rereading them I was blown away by the art - they are amazing.

What blows my mind is, Jack Kirby was drawing Captain America in the Golden, the Silver *and* the Bronze Age. Is there any other instance of a creator working on a character through all those periods in comic book history?? Maybe Bill Everett? Anyway, I'm bound to get this omni. I think Kirby's Silver Age Cap comics are underappreciated and I want to see what he was doing with Cap in the mid-70s. Having read (and liked!) the 4th World, I'd say 70s Kirby is an acquired taste. His work was visually and narratively dated at that time, but he still had tons of creative energy and gave a lot of valuable concepts and characters to the big 2.

I have the original issues, but I still can't wait to add this to my collection. Sadly, I was there in the 70's buying these off the stands, and the lettercol's are a fair representation of what was going on at the time. You could trade Avengers comics with your friends. You could trade Superman, Spider-Man or Batman. But if you bought a Fourth World book, or this run of Cap, you were stuck with it. The sad truth is, no one wanted 70's Kirby. He hadn't achieved the legendary status he has today amongst comics fans. It was great for me at the time, because I liked Kirby, and it meant I could assemble complete runs of Kamandi, The Demon and the Fourth World series cheaply. I could trade one Iron Man or Daredevil for two or three Kirby books. But it breaks my heart to think back on it now. Long Live the King!

As for the letter pages, I love reading those for the silver age and bronze age books since it is the only way to get a first hand understanding of how audiences viewed these stories back then. I have the original omnibus. It is true it has the same restoration as the TPBs even though the colors in mine are quite vivid, probably due to how they look on glossy paper versus the standard paper from trades. One thing I was noticing is the page count. Your page numbers in the omni are higher than mine, I guess for the letter pages (missing in first edition). You know, it's kind of refreshing to know Kirby wasn't above criticism (fair or not) back then. Frank Miller has been roasted as well for his Dark knight sequels and AS-Batman. I own the original omnibus and was shocked there were no intros or letter pages like other omnibus from Marvel. Was this considered inferior Kirby by the omnibus editor as well as fans at the time this was originally sold on the stands? The only extras were the original pencil pages. The colors were much darker. Don’t think this was used for the paperback since the one caption pointed out was not the same as the paperback. New edition looks brighter so shows more detail. The first annual and treasury stories are in their true sequence and not in the beginning as it is in the first omnibus. Will definitely upgrade. So many new extras. I bought every issue originally and was in seventh heaven that Kirby was back at Marvel and doing the one character I wanted him to return to. His Captain America was always my favorite.

I remember when I read the introductions for these in Masterworks and I think I would agree with the fans mostly, you cannot return to a title and just do what you like ignoring almost everything what happened in the meantime, I think that is irresponsible and disrespectful for the fans. We really have many examples when certain things happened in comic books because many fans asked for or they were deciding, so I think they should have listened more to fans especially after certain things were brought to the attention several time. I am not very happy about this Omnibus, I don't know what's the purpose of it and why they couldn't just reach it with the normal volume numbering. Now what we should do? Buy it and when the Omnibus series reaches this era sell it? Or not to buy it and maybe the Omnibus series will not even get this far??? Not very clever in my opinion.

Tin hat well and truly on but I thought this run was dreadful - almost unreadable

Just used your video to double check, but the 1st edition of this omnibus has only 558 pages, so 90 new pages in the new edition. Other than a couple pages of pencil sketches none of the extras you showed are in the 1st edition.

Were the letter pages in there, sir?

@@NearMintCondition No letters pages either.

Yeah so this one is so much better. FF 2 reprint is also going to have new scans

@@NearMintCondition I think this is the first time Marvel is adding content to a reprint. No new stories, but 90 pages of extras is quite a bit.

Well, we did get Squadron Supreme and Eternals expanded. So sort of the first time.

I kind of understand the people from the letters pages. They were enjoying a book, then this person came and shifted the tone disregarding what the book was being about. We defend Kirby only because he's Kirby.

I get it. Reminds me of Claremont coming back to X-men. New readers reading new X-men would be so confused.
