Here’s a blast from the past, a nameplate we thought we’d never see back in production - the Capri!
Only this Ford Capri isn’t how your dad might remember it. Because before, from the late 1960s through to the mid ‘80s, the Capri was a coupe, sort of Europe’s Ford Mustang.
And now? Well, it’s an SUV crossover. An electric one at that. And it’s not even really a Ford.

Ford actually did the opposite with the Bronco, although they kinda did with the bronco sport, albeit that one is kinda more for sales, the other is a true resurrection of the Bronco. Chevrolet, on the other hand, slapped the blazer name on a boring crossover.

@@schvyler Not the point. EVs across the board depreciate a lot faster than ICE cars. The tech is rapidly developing so they become outdated as quickly as laptops and smartphone. And people are scared to spend money on a used car that has a big question mark surrounding a component that represents a third to half it's value: the battery. EVs are still firmly in the early adaptor phase. You're spending a lot of money on something that will soon be available in an improved and cheaper version.

You know what, I was indifferent about Puma name on a crossover. I was reserved about Mustang Mach-E name, as it didn’t need the Mustang part. But it turns out people calling out Ford from the beginning were right. Ford is having a laugh and deliberately trolling with names just turn brand’s fans away. Only people who care about Capri name won’t buy a 5-door EV liftback, so why use that name in the first place? Why trash the legacy? Can’t wait for Ford’s next EV SUV, the GT40! I can remember when the Mach-E came out, that Ford had designed a car and were lost in the styling until someone suggested the styling of the Mustang as inspiration. So, we now have the US only Explorer and the Capri - nostalgic names to sit alongside the new I.D.3, ahem, Puma... it is to help Ford and the consumer connect with EV, whereas VW disconnected the Golf from its EV programme, and they were a little lost with the styling, the quality, and it's reputation.

As a former Capri owner (2 x 2.0S and 2 x 2.8i) i have no problem with Ford using the name on a new model. They obviously own the right to the name so it is up to them what they do with it. The target audience for this new car are not the ones that are now getting butt hurt that the Puma and now the Capri are electric SUVs/Crossovers. Manufacturers are having to jump through hoops to hit various targets that have been set out by governments around the world. This is just Ford's way of trying to meet those EV targets. Just because there are EVs out there to buy does not mean that they will sell. EV sales are slowing /stalling as doubts over the future proofing of the technology, range anxiety and the general lack of charging infrastructure mean that consumers are reluctant to buy them. Is the new Capri for me? No but i am not interested in buying an electric car, any electric car. I wouldn't want to buy a used one with no guarantee of how the battery will perform and the price of a new one is just out of the question. Like many thousands of people, i have no facility for a home charger, i have no drive, i live in a 2nd floor flat and there are no roadside charging points anywhere where i live. I have a 22 year old Fiesta that does me fine for the journeys that i want to do. It may need to be replaced if it fails it's next MOT. If i replace it, it will be for another ICE car, Maybe in 10 - 15 years the charging infrastructue will be there, maybe not. Either way i'll be sticking to ICE cars until the time that they tax petrol so highly that most ordinary people will not be able to afford to run an ICE car.

Looks nice. As an American I know the 1st gen Ford Capri as a Mercury (2nd gen was a restyled Fox-Body Mustang, and the 3rd gen a re-badged Australian FWD Capri). This shouldn't be a Capri. In my opinion, it would be better if this was called the Fusion. In the UK the Fusion was some kind of Crossover-like MPV, while the North American Fusion was a midsize Sedan (Saloon). This vehicle has a sedan-like side figure with a crossover stance, so that would make lots more sense. If that happened and it was sold in the USA, I would probably give this vehicle a try.
