John Carmack was a pretty brilliant mind and kind of instantiated the genre, plus it was all premised on being able to "aim" in a 3D environment, which requires good hardware acceleration and smooth transitions. Best you could do was something like Duck Hunt. Imagine Might & Magic-style frames as you explore dungeons in a 3D environment but trying to aim. Change it to 25 degree angles for each frame I guess as you press on the WASD-Pad? 😁
