As a devout student of stoicism and Greek philosophy, we've learned from Socrates that a democracy is only as good as the education system of any society. Trump's election in 2016 is proof the our education system is in desperate need of improvement. Like math, and English, classes in critical thinking skills should be required in middle school, through high school, and college.

Wow. So profound and thought provoking. Our forefathers/founding-fathers really did try to think things out (knowing that our USA 🇺🇸 might not be a success). Good news our USA is a success story for the world. And, we have the opportunity to make more of a success of all that we have. Go. Go. Go USA.

It was a feature when people put country before party. When senators vow to make a president of the opposing party a one-term president, when justices attend campaign events, and when congresspeople believe in conspiracy theories, then it's a problem.

The founders assumed that the sides would disagree but ultimately would find common ground for the good of the people. Not that we would have one side that has decided to manipulate every loophole possible to block court appointments and lock the system for an entire presidency with no concern for the people, only the richest in our country and their own power...

Indeed. Remember, they shredded the previous constitution and then wrote this revered relic. It's way past time to do it again. How many times does a pending constitutional crisis have to be avoided before somebody says "hey, that could have been a problem, why don't we fix that?"

Interesting dialogue. I am curious if the thesis of divided government works when it is no longer representative. As an external observer it appears to me that when parties have gerrymandered states so they can get elected and hold power with minority rule you will end up with a stagnating society, polarised between change and resistance or, to phrase in a more pejorative manner, repression or revolution. Surely a closer historic parallel would be the American Civil War? Or a better ancient example the fall of the Roman Republic?

The other, rarely mentioned characteristic of the Founding Fathers was the diversity of Faith. Yes, MOST were Christians with a number following the philosophy of DEISM. Even within the Christian cohort the differences between denominations back in the late 1700's was not insignificant. Hamilton for example was Huguenot who were subject to tyranny at the hands of the Catholic Church. Th point is that despite the cries of the Evangelical Community, Christ, Christianity etc were NOT enshrined in the Constitution. Why? Because they were never meant to be, quite the opposite.

Many problems with the thesis... The US Constitution was not a brilliant work meant to guide the nation for the next thousand years. It was partly born of the very specific circumstances of the time, partly hangover from the British tradition, partly well-intentioned bad inventions. The primary constraint of the Founders was to keep together a bunch of former British colonies, **each with their own established government** , which otherwise would had become independent countries. That, not some abstract ideal of "distributed power", was the origin of the State's unusual (and, today, extremely cumbersome) degree of independence. And that compromise facilitated the Civil War, a hundred years later. Moreover, the economy of the colonies was based on plantations owned by patriarchal white families and worked on by black slaves; and slavery was hereditary, with the rule that children with even one slave parent would be slaves themselves. That structure permeates the Constitution. Whenever the Constitution says "rights", it means "rights of the white males". The Second Amendment was meant to allow plantation owners (the implicit meaning of "people") to form armed militias to prevent slave uprisings, if the regular army was called to fight elsewhere. Many institutions were copied from the British ones, except for changes to make some of them elected rather than hereditary. Judges, by the most part, are appointed for life. The President has many of the powers of a King, such as the power to pardon anyone who has been convicted by the Judiciary. The Senate and House are copied from the two British houses, the Lords and the Commons. While both the British historians and the American Founders pretended to be following the Roman example, in fact it was a case of "converegent evolution". Like the Roman Senate, the House of Lords was first, and was meant to be formed by the heads of the noble families; while, like the Roman Tribune, the House of Commons was a later concession to the fact that the nobility was a small minority of the population. The American Senate was meant to be the House of Lords, where two representatives of each State would take the place of the British Nobles. The motivation was of course to preserve for the wealthy elites in each State (where the Senators were expected to come from) at least as much power as the "commoners".

Our 18th century Constitutional Republic provides we the people to choose between an autocratic and democratic political system. Over the past 40 years we have been leaning toward an autocracy preferred by our two private political Party corporations. So far they have successfully convinced people to voluntarily follow politicians, instead of leading them in this 21st century. TrueDemocracyNow.org

"United we stand, divided we fall." A simple concept, really, that too many Americans seem to have forgotten or abandoned. Our nation is like an airplane; it requires both the left and right wings working together in tandem to operate properly and safely. Only problem is the Reich-wing decided to try flying solo, forcing us all into a nose-dive! Care about the issues, disdain political gamesmanship, while still recognizing politics is an inseparable and necessary element. Have always respected and valued loyal opposition, even if in disagreement with the ideology. Fact is, though, the GOP has abdicated the requisite role of loyal opposition to become a mindless, tribalistic hyper-partisan Republican cult placing political party over truth, reason, decency, and country.
