I'll just take note of your questions or terms you weren't sure of here: 1. Kasmala - means "strong", from the word "malakas", in this case it's about your strong and powerful vibe. there's a style of slang in the Philippines to say the word backwards or swap the last syllable into the first Kbye 2. Party bus - that's a jeepney! We took the jeeps leftover by the US military durinf ww2 and turned them into public transportation 3. Yes they are coconuts 4. Yes a lot of Filipino music is breakup music! Probably because our languages are so poetic, it's difficult to make lighthearted pop music without being taken as cringe. If your songwriting doesn't have deep feeling, it doesn't pop off. You'll find most of OPM are ballads, alternative rock, rap, or indie folk 5. Flamenco - likely it's the sound of Tinikling which is a traditional dance with bamboos clapping; i think the string instruments are bandurria. Look it up! It's really fun. Kasmala 6. The initial shot was a recreation of an actual historical photo of a young indigenous girl that was being shown at the World's Fair being displayed like they were on a zoo 7. Yes you can call them costumes! These are anyway like, modern recreations 8. ABC's? - it's about how the USA colonized us and used the education system to assimilate us to them 9. Xylophones? We have a lot of bamboo instruments like the Gabbang that could have been used in the music 10. Why do they keep feeling up the disguised people? -- that was about how the USA in the 1900s made a law and even had newspaper headlines about making it illegal for white women to date Filipinos, because they found them very attractive 11. The black lipstick - when they put our indigenous people at the zoo they were making them look like savages, and among them advertised them as "dog eaters", thats why that same member had an earlier scene where he "bit" a toy cloth dog ABKD 12. It's the name of the original Filipino alphabet that only had 20 letters like our precolonial writing system before we used Latin letters. We didn't have the letter C before. The alphabet was like, A, B, K, D, E, G, H... we have 28 letters now, basically the English alphabet + Ñ and Ng 13. Skin lightening ad - it was a direct reference to Ponds commercials in the 2000s Maharani 14. Do I know this girl? It's Jhoanna from BINI 15. Maharaja - it's a king; we had monarchies prior to the colonization! The dance they were doing kind of tells the story of a king and queen, and is often performed at weddings and events 16. Alás - his name is stressed on the second syllable. It means Ace, like as in the ace of a suite of cards. 17. R-Ji, yes you read that correctly Thanks for being so mindful of pronunciation and cultural questions! We appreciate you!

everything about Alamat screams incorporating Cultural Philippine Elements into everything and that is what I love about them. Even their name “Alamat”- which mean “legend” sound Authentic Filipino although their style is just right trendy in this generation. Those musical instruments are Traditional Filipino’s, the wardrobe, they also add tradional dances in their choreography, down to the sets and props.yas!

Alamat is very heavy in filipino cultural heritage. Costumes, patterns on the fabric, sets, instruments used and video concepts are filled with our history. They're probably the leaders in PPop who highlight our history and put it to the forefront.

ABKD is about encouragement in the face of adversity because of discrimination. There is a people group in the Philippines, the Aeta, who are darker skinned with wavy hair who face prejudice and are held back. The song encourages them to see themselves in a positive way and push forward and have hope.

Philippines has over 7000 islands. Islands from the North down to the South has a lot of differences when it comes to tradition. Most from the North are influenced by Spaniards hence Catholicism, meanwhile the South are mostly Muslims. Some also come from tribes and indigenous ones. You will see the differences with their Costume. Each member comes from different Region and speaks different language.

Finally! ALAMAT!!!!!! I think if you really want a cultural dive about the Philippines, Alamat is the group for you. Honestly, I learned a lot about our history because of them. The languages, the music instruments, the traditional clothes, and the pre-colonial culture that Filipinos usually do not know about. The way they incorporate it all and break norms is amazing! ABKD speaks about the beauty standard here in the Philippines. We should love our brown skin. Kasmala is about history when the native Filipinos were treated like animals in a zoo. Maharani is just gorgeous, especially the dance, it was traditional folk dance. ALAMAT is spectacular and I hope more people will listen to them. Pls react to DAGUNDONG, DAYANG, SAY U LOVE ME, ILY-ILY, DAY AND NIGHT and their ballads songs too. All songs no skip. 🤎🤎🤎 Thank you for reacting to them.

Thanks for reacting! "Kasmala" is actually tricky because it's not an actual word, it's a reworking of the word "Malakas" which means strong in Tagalog. Musically, they lean a bit more RnB but their songs are great because there's generally some sort of message and a lot of it leans on Filipino culture and fashion in some way. You'll notice the songs also incorporate traditional Filipino musical instruments. The group is also multi-lingual and multi-ethnic and they represent the diversity of Filipinos to a degree. BTW in 8:50 the vehicle they're in is called a Jeepney and is a popular mode of transportation in the Philippines, recycled from US army keeps from the 50s onwards

My Golden 3: SB19 Alamat G22 'Kasmala' is an anagram from the word 'malakas' (strong, or strength depending on how it's used. Pablo also made an anagram for 'malakas' in "What?" - he exclaimed "Sakalam!" "Bad luck" in Filipino is "malas" pr. mah-lahs ABKD isn't an acronym for something, it's it's the FIlipino alphabet (traditionally, Filipino has abuguida, but because of colonization it became an alphabet). The vowels are short sounds: ah, eh, ii, oh, uuu

The Kasmala MV, even though the lyrics are about a woman, it actually references a couple of historical events. One is the exhibition of Filipinos at the 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis, Missouri USA, where they were treated like specimens at a zoo. It also references the Watsonville riots in California in 1930, where white mobs attacked Filipino farm workers because they were afraid Filipinos were taking their jobs and their women.

You don't understand the way I dropped everything the moment this came up in my notifs. Thank you so much for deciding to react to my ult ppop group! I've been watching you since you began reacting to SB19 and now that you've finally dabbled in ALAMAT's music, it feels like a full circle for me 🥺🤎 There are already many comments here explaining the concept and creative direction of the group itself, so I'll just reiterate them! ALAMAT (which means Legend in English) is a multi-ethnic multilingual group. They are named Alamat because their goal is to bring back the stories of our old tradition and our cultural history through their music, videos, and fashion. The Philippines has gone through a long period of colonialism with three different countries, so this concept from Alamat is very special for fans like us because it makes us more connected to our culture. Their concept is summarized by one word "Edutainment" (Education + Entertainment) because by listening and watching them - you are not just entertained, you are also educated. Please don't hesitate to ask any questions in your future videos about them if ever! The Magiliw (fans of Alamat) are really nice and we are always so happy when new people arrive interested in Alamat. Sending so much love! 💕

There’s a Filipino folk dance where halved coconut shells are used by male dancers-I don’t remember the name of it! Alamat is known for incorporating Philippine culture into their songs. The change in tempo near the end of kbye and the instrumentation sounds like another Filipino dance called the Tinikling. I was born and raised in the US, but we grew up learning Filipino folk dances.

@ynnos55555 ай бұрын
The group often infuses traditional elements into their songs & visuals. The string instrumental you hear in their debut song is traditional Filipino rondalla music. The coconut shells strapped on them during one of their choreo is a Filipino folk dance called Maglalatik. Each member often wore clothing inspired by their ethnic heritage. In the 2nd mv the song & mv storyline is not related since it’s a love song but the mv is a depiction of the struggles of Filipinos during the American occupation. ABKD is basically the Filipino alphabet used as acronyms in a song & the mv highlights the Aeta tribal mountain people. Maharani is a Sanskrit word for Great Queen and the mv features a traditional Maranao Royal dance Singkil.

8:31 - that's a Jeepney! it's our public transport in the Philippines. 10:45 - yes those are coconuts. it's used in a dance called Maglalatik. usually male dancers and it looks exactly like what the boys have on there. 11:43 - those are probably the bamboo xylophones called Gabbang 12:52 - this is rondalla music accompanied for the Tinikling dance (the use of bamboo tapping the ground) that's basically a lot of Filipino culture in one song/video. so if you're not used to it, it might be new to you. 23:16 - lol the white-dressed people are basically 'The White Man'; the MV has nothing to do with the song lmao but it's a historical thing that happened to Filipinos a long time ago. 24:00 - the bamboo stick weapons is what we use for our national sport: Arnis ABKD is basically our ABC, it's pronounced as A-Ba-Ka-Da. The Crab people aren't cheering her up, they're pulling her down. In the Philippines, Crab Mentality is a very famous thing since we think when other Filipinos are being negative at another Filipino as us pulling each other down (it's a very negative connotation), as crabs if put in a bucket will pull each other down to get to the top. So the crabs in the video are basically saying mean things to her for being dark skinned or 'ugly', and that's why one of them pulled her by the leg almost at the end of the video. Alamat's thing is promoting Filipino culture and showcasing the good and 'bad', if you saw the skin-whitening soap ad at the start of the MV; honestly it was also shown in the Kasmala MV at the start too... 35:08 - that is Tinikling! and those are bamboo sticks. 36:16 - Maharaja is Great King in Sanskrit. 38:47 - Alas means 'Ace' like the card but in Tagalog.

it's just so funny though how the western culture is so deep into recognizing One-sided admiration/love as "simping" which has such a negative connotation. But in reality, I'm sure most of us had a crush on had liked someone who was taken, or not even, but just couldn't bring ourselves to tell them at one point. Romantic in the west is called "simping" now. Though I get it. The "Nice Guy" stereotype has been kind of saturated with bad connotations as well.

Fun fact: kbye was composed by the boys themselves! It wasn't their planned debut song but management liked it so much and made it so. The members also usually write the lines that are in their mother tongue and participate in the creative process in general. There're only 8 members in 'kasmala' because Kin left the group after 'kbye' due to a change in priorities IIRC. He was the one in a blue suit in 'kbye'. The guy with long hair + nose piercing is Valfer, the piercing is most likely real and can be seen in their older lives/vlogs/variety content with him. He and Alas have a whole bunch of tattoos, most of the other members have a few like Jao's butterfly tat, but they aren't required to hide them. We seem to not have those kinds of restrictions for P-pop idols as of now, though I'm not too sure about the newer groups. Valfer left after ABKD due to creative differences and is now a solo artist. Gami (the guy with black lipstick in 'kasmala') also left soon after as he had to prioritize his mental health but he's okay now and is in a group under Viva with Migo Valid (the abusive boyfriend in Maharani MV). Thank you for reacting to Alamat, Hanna! They make sure to incorporate cultural elements from various provinces in the Philippines to highlight our heritage. From the concept, lyrics and choreo (a lot of their choreo are based on folk dances or martial arts) to the instruments and textiles/fabrics; they are chosen and used to represent not just the Philippines as a whole but also other Philippine cultures aside from that of the Tagalog, for us to appreciate our and each other's roots. And don't worry about getting anything wrong or having a lot of questions, we're more than happy to share our knowledge and culture! If you'd like to continue reacting to Alamat, here are some of their songs I think you'd like: Dagundong Aswang Day and Night Dayang Say You Love Me Gayuma ILY-ILY For other P-pop groups, I'd recommend G22 and VXON!
