Your thoughts are pretty much my thoughts too! It's such an important song, and so unmistakably P-Pop and unmistakably Alamat. The cool thing is that not only do they reference so many parts of Philippine history and culture in the lyrics and MV, but even if you didn't understand any of that, the song itself still goes SO hard. You're right about it being the perfect song for stadiums and sports events and stuff - I get worked up listening to this just at the gym, lol. 🤣 One cool thing in the MV that someone else pointed out is at the beginning, you can see the group being shot at with bullets, but when it goes into a close up, only Jao is being shot at. Jao's costume/look is very reminiscent of Jose Rizal, who was executed by firing squad.

You got most of it right. Eskrima/Escrima, Kali, and Arnis are the same Filipino Martial Art, they are just known in the 3 main clusters of the islands of the Philippines i.e. Kali - Mindanao, Luzon - Arnis, Eskrima/Escrima - Visayas. It's so cool that you learned some Filipino Martial Art (FMA, yeah makes one think of Fullmetal Alchemist). There's an organization called WEKAF (World Escrima Kali Arnis Federation) that holds tournaments. FMA is surprisingly popular in Germany. FMA is so easy to meld with other martial arts. Gami was hanging out in their studio, so they invited him to make a 'cameo'. It's not that they don't want to be Christians, as in the pre-Colonial Ancient Philippines era, they believe that Jesus is an addition to the gods they had. They never hated on the religion, just the unjust and tyrannical Friars. What Alamat works with is not a genre of music as they do a lot of genres, but they do cover a lot of Filipino themes. Not necessarily just business men boot, but politician boot too; as yes it references the Treaty of Paris and the Mock Battle of Manila.

I love that you dissected the song, as well as the music video, even Gami and Swaggy's cameo. And I also love that you noticed Mo, too, in this era. Can't get enough of his visuals and vocals. I first subscribed to you because of your in depth reactions on Ppop, esp on Alamat, and your interest in PH history and culture. And for being a Josh bias, too! Alamat is truly the essence of Ppop and I've been attacked for saying this online. But when you go back to the history of Alamat as a ppop group, it really was built to represent our heritage, making this authentically Filipino. And they've been very consistent to this day. No hate to all our Ppop groups out there because they carry our flag and I feel proud that they are doing so. But there's reason why they are often compared to and mistaken as Kpop, because the hard truth is, it's what the fans wanted or still want. I love a lot of them, like SB19, G22 and VXON. They are also paving the way to the modern P-Pop culture, and that's amazing. But Alamat was the trailblazer and the maverick in the aspect of cultural significance and educating the youth in terms of Philippine culture and heritage awareness. The genius behind Alamat was JPL and his team, the first ones to take the shot and say, you know what? Let's do this. Who cares if people laugh at us for singing the different languages of PH, performing ethnic dances and turning them into pop? It's about time we sing in our own tongues and our own beats, and wear our own threads. It's about time the voices of the Filipino is heard. You are correct, you can't compare Alamat to any group, and that's because they have their own signature and imprint: they carry songs that are historical facts that resonate to every Filipino. They've been doing this since Kasmala. And this song in particular is the cry of our ancestors, therefore, their blood runs in our veins, too. That is why the beat and lyrics resonate so strongly. Alamat is what the Filipinos need to heal in terms of knowing about our culture so the generations to come will start healing from the wounds of the past. We can go on all day, but your reaction was worth the wait. It's hard for other reactors to digest Alamat m/v's and songs, but you did it so well Kelly! Thank you!

I certainly do like Josh a lot, but I don't consider myself to have a bias out of Mahalima! (I like them all too much to choose haha 😉) I have to agree, I love Alamat's music bc of the depth & all the references that encourage people to research more. Digesting their MVs gives me a challenge, and I really enjoy picking apart their messages! ❣️

You're so right abour JPL's thought about forming a group that sings and represents different parts of the country. It actually started with JPL's thesis paper, and then boom, we have ALAMAT!

Just want to add something Mo & Alas - Pre hispanic era (warriors who fought the arriving colonizers) Taneo & Tomas - Katipuneros (Filipinos rebels that revolted to Spain) R-Ji & Jao - Ilustrados (Educated Filipinos that revolt with Katipuneros with pen and ink) Basically they are representing the types of Filipinos who fought Spanish regime.

Hi Kelly for the Story line: Alas and Mo represents the tribe of Lapu-lapu who fought Magellan's battalion (1521) when they tried to conquer the Mindanao region. Unfortunately despite that, the Spaniards were able to colonize for more than 3 centuries almost entire Luzon (except the Cordilleras), Visayas and some parts of Mindanao (like Zamboanga). Thomas and Taneo represented the Katipuneros (or the Revolutionarie) who by the death of our National Hero Jose Rizal and by his books urged the Filipinos to fight against the Spanish colonization for Philippine Freedom. Then, Jao and R-Ji represented teh Illustrados because when everyone thought that the Spaniards retreated against the "friendly" Americans later did the Filipinos realized that Spain sold the Philippines to the Americans (Treaty in Paris), thus allowing the Americans to rule over us for 50 yrs or so (the seen where a giant foot is stepping unto them). But Filipinos never gave up and fought for freedom and independence, after the first indenpendence day (June 12, 1898) from the Spaniards came the 2nd one in July 4, 1946. The song seems to be a resounding call for independence, for ownership, for courage and to stand up for who we are... Wars or colonizations may have end but there are still those who are so addicted to power that they are silently working on strategies to take over one's area of responsibility to another. Alamat's Dagundong is that call to always stand up for ourselves and be brave to protect our own. Tho you gotta it, you're so good at it ❤

just something i noticed in the word play of the lyrics too, the use of the word "papel" in the second verses has many different meanings like: - papel: paper, referencing names getting changed and listed down on paper, the cedula (tax paper) - mapapel: corrupt, someone who only cares about money (paper currency) - umapel: to appeal against (like in the court of law, but also can be used to appeal against the government)

Isapuso has two meanings: 1. Take to heart 2. Isa - one, Puso - heart (One Heart) The drums you saw - Gimbal And yes the one in the background is a gong. 😊 I just want to commend you Kelly. Yay! I was waiting for your reaction, Kelly! You analyzed this MV so well. I so love that this song was jam packed with Filipino history. The two novels that were being mentioned towards the climax of the song are Jose Rizal’s novels Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo. Now I’m curious about their other song in the Isa Puso album called Noli (I wonder if it’s based on this novel). I am also curious if they used Taneo’s bod for one of the tattooed warriors 😅! I agree with you, Mo is just beautiful in his locks era this season!

@@kam11522Ooh, I'll be eagerly waiting to see your reactions then. I love supporting all SEA Pop groups and music scenes whenever I can and even as a Thai, I am always impressed with the musicality P-POP groups and artists, y'all are great singers. Word of warning though, some groups may have some copyright issues (I also found this when making my video), so I had to keep their clips to less than 30 seconds (you can also add little breaks every 30 seconds since I found the copyright check only activates if there is more than 30 seconds of consecutive footage). My video is slightly long (~25 mins) but I mostly included releases from within 5 or so months and made sure there was no copyright issues so if this is an issue, no worries!

16:18 - the tattoos here are from the pre-colonial Visayan people, which the Spanish called 'Pintados' Generally, it's the warriors that have these tattoos and they're a sign of bravery and experience in the battlefield. After every successful war/battle, a warrior generally goes to a mambabatik (tattooist) to get a proof of their victory, starting from the legs then up. The more more adorned you are, the higher your status is. Not only is the amount of tattoos important, but the placement of the tattoos is significant as well. The more painful the location of the tattoo is (such as the face) the higher your authority is. Which is why many Datu's (village chiefs) have tattoos on their faces. For the symbolism of the tattoos, I can't say much because I haven't read much yet but a lot of the things that go in to the tattoos are: - animal symbolism (like snake scales, dragon scales, probably the thing they defeated) - tribal patterns (eg geometric patterns found in clothings etc) - human-esque figures - nature (like stars, flowers and the sun) There is a video about Filo Tribal Tattoos here, I'll add it when I find it again. But I hope this helps!

The book at the start of the MV spells ALAMAT but the font used was from Jose Rizal's Noli Me Tangere, one of the two books referenced in the last stanza.

Yes that is Escrima also called Kali by foreigners, the sticks are made with rattan, also called Kali Sticks. I am doing Escrima now and the art can be applied in different combative styles, open hand, arnis(sticks), sword and dagger. I hope you go back to your Filipino Martial Arts.

13:17 I just wanna add that for the part where they said 'you catalog our names in paper', this is an important part in Filipino history that many still don't know. Before Spanish occupation, Filipinos did not have last names, only indications of where they lived like 'taga-bukid' or 'taga-ilog' etc. So when Spain came, and wanted to document us/count how many people there were, they gave us a book of names to choose from. At this point a lot of Filipinos already knew how to read the alphabet and rewrote their own Filipino names, and those who didn't basically just got words off from books like the Bible and chose their names there, which is why you can see many Filipinos have Christian names and Filipinos that retained their native names. This fact is really important because in modern day, a lot of Filipinos believe that we are a mixture of Spanish and Natives and that native Filipino blood no longer exists (except for the indigenous people). When in fact (and is statistically proven) only a small percentage of Filipinos are mixed blood, majority of Filipinos are still Filipinos, and only our names are Spanish. This really an important fact to me because I have always had a complex about my name and my identity, growing up not knowing the truth. I always hated how I was not purely Filipino and thinking that I came from a line of colonizers. I hated hearing how "ugly Filipinos would have been if the Spanish didn't came" when in fact in Scott's 15th Century Barangay, the Filipinos were called handsome and beautiful (which coming from a European was something). Ik im getting kinda intense, really sorry i just wanted to info dump bc this is the first time I've ever seen a foreigner do a filipino cultural analysis on an mv 😅 If you are interested in learning more about Filipino history, I suggest going to Karakoa Productions' Facebook. They're a non profit org that researches about pre colonial Visayan/Filipino history! ❤

I'm definitely not an expert haha, but I try my best to analyze based on whatever knowledge I have about Filipino history. I imagine a lot of people can relate to you about the identity complex. The history of the Philippines has so much packed into it, and a lot of it was likely either lost to time or destroyed. That's why I love the work that Alamat & their team put in to teaching people about history & mythology!
