indeed. it's interesting that these two hear something more optimistic in the song (that he got the girl...and doesn't feel worthy) - I have no beef with that but yeah, my interpretation of the song is exactly this. He never had a chance and he knows he never will. Devastating indeed.

@@lisar3944 Yeah this song does actually have a correct interpretation, and you're not far off. It's about a girl in his college that he was completely infatuated with but could never get up the courage to talk to her, so he would like follow her around making him feel like a creep. Once he got really drunk to get the courage to talk to her and he just ended up scaring her and she ran.

To be more accurate, he obsessed over a girl he saw often in bars and around town while in university and regularly stalked her. He got drunk enough to confess his feelings to her but it just scared the shit out of her causing her to run away. He actually had a panic attack at one of their concerts because she was in the crowd.

I read an article not long ago from a psychology journal in which people living with various mental illnesses named songs that helped them cope. "Creep" was a favorite among people with self-esteem issues because they felt like the singer knew exactly how they felt. I was 19 when "Creep" came out. I grew up a very awkward and introverted kid; I was labeled the smart kid in school; other kids wanted to sit by me during test time ( to try to copy answers) but not at lunchtime. It wasn't until I was 17 or 18 that I developed a small circle of friends who had similar tastes in music and movies as me, and who were also kind of shy. Almost 30 years later, they are still my "tribe". We see each other when we can, and we have been in each other's wedding parties and so on. Yes, I'm a freak and a weirdo, but I luckily found other freaks and weirdos who understand me.

Definitely listen to more Radiohead. They are one of the most creative and influential experimental rock bands of the last 25 years, and they're still putting out otherworldly music. As for Creep...I would say I was considered decently "popular" growing up, but this is one of those songs that I feel like still speaks to my soul at some deep level. Every experiences some level of self-doubt at points in their lives. It's so easy to identify with Thom's lyrics in this song.

New subscriber here! Looks like you're interested in great music...regardless of its era or genre. This is a remarkable song and Brian Justin Crum's cover was mentioned by another commenter. Surprisingly, no one mentioned the cover done by Haley Reinhart (fronting for Postmodern Jukebox.) It's been viewed over 75,000,000 times! PMJ does modern tunes arranged as throwback styles--reminiscent of the 1920s through 1950s. They use scores of top vocalists to front for their typical acoustic combo/band. Haley/PMJ do "Creep" in a style that's totally different from the original and any other cover. In a single take with no props, electronics, autotune or edits, Haley is riveted to the floor as a "torch singer"in front of a mike and you're transported back to a 1950s nightclub! Her presentation is a show-stopper...like nothing you've ever experienced! Please react to the video (B&W, for effect) here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/o2TPd2WneqZlmdk

The best live performance of this was their debut in the US on the Arsenio Hall late night show. It is just amazing and emotional and had Arsenio Hall speechless

Just imagine watching from afar as the object of your obsession floats on by. You don't have a chance. You know it. You're still going to obsess about them, though.
