The high pitched squeal on the guitar is called a "pinch harmonic" its done by slightly touching the string with a finger, usually the side of your thumb, immediately after plucking it. It works best with a lot of gain, which is why you tend to only hear it in hard rock and metal.

I have to disagree here with you, maybe im a bit bias, because of my own depression , suicidal and so on ! It's from my point of view the other way around! What ever happen any pain any lost and what so ever created him! You can hide it on some occasions, you can learn how to handle it "I push my fingers into my eyes" or in other ways. BUT this will always stick with you! You can fight depression and so on (though thing) but these mental issue forms you even if you doesnt suffer from it anymore, it formes you! It will never leave you it will always be a part of you and your life! You cant kill your history, your story, because you didnt created it, you played the main role in it and in the life of others! And that is something you can't kill, you will always stick with it!

Oh man, this takes me back to my days on the Ozzfest forums. Slipknot is nu metal and it was a big argument whether it was real metal or not. The general consensus was (back then, at least) that nu metal was hard rock with metal influences. Don’t know how most feel today, but that was the popular opinion then. Just in case an argument starts, I don’t care either way anymore.

Even if you don't like their music, you have to respect the amount of (literal) blood, sweat, and tears these guys put into their music and their live shows. The most psycho part about that album was it was written and recorded in the "Houdini Mansion" an INCREDIBLY haunted place and it was right when Corey decided to start getting sober. He was waking up with a bottle of Jack Daniels in hand and more in the bed. In his second book he talks about being in the shower and seeing some old guy in a tux walk past the bathroom door. And also how Clown had an alarm clock that kept going off in the middle of the night, even when he unplugged it. Then he lost it and broke the thing, only for it to show back up in his room plugged in and set right completely intact and going off again. Among many other things.

But also the whole song is where you're looking at both sides of life to see that there is darkness within the light and also light within the darkness and that this is what life gives us.
