How You vibe to tool. Think of it as an out of body experience, as there music was for mellow drugged out raves. Its not one you bob your head to, you just kinda gotta do your own thing. For me if I wanna relax I throw on tool, Set my RGB to purple, turn on a lava lamp and just stare at the ceiling. Tool hits different because like Nine Inch Nails the origional audience was a bunch of drugged out Teens and Adults of the 90s

A 'schism' is a conflict, a split - magnificently orchestrated by TOOL. The jumping back and forth of time signatures is almost like an argument - when they are talking past each other, there is confusion; but when they are in sync, the harmony is transcendent. Good work, bruh!

It's what makes the ending more powerful too. He just keeps singing "I know the pieces fit" getting more and more aggressive until he starts screaming. Like that kind of frustration you get when you know something works but just can't get it to for whatever reason.

"They not playing... they take you on a full experience." < Most pure statement to a Tool reaction video that I've ever seen. There are 47 time signature changes in the song depending on how you divide it which is why it felt like you were on beat, then off beat. At the very end, it comes together into a time signature that's much more relatable which is why you can jam out a bit there. It's in line with the lyrics that's being repeated at that time - "I know the pieces fit" as if during the rest of the song, it was like trying to figure it out and at the very end, you did.

Maynard said he wrote the lyrics to this song as trying to put into words what he felt the song itself was trying to communicate. I don't believe the song has a conscious ability to attempt to communicate with humans but i like the concept of approaching lyrics that way. What better way to use vocals as an instrument than to subject yourself to the will of the song? To be an instrument of the song itself. I dunno it's cool though

I absolutely love this song for so many reasons, one being how accessible it is while still being complex. Basically they are counting to 5 and then immediately counting to 7, and then repeat. BUT 5 and 7 add up to 12, so you can still bob your head to it. Absolutely love offbeat patterns, and you definitely had the beat at the beginning. I love coming back to songs like this because once you know what is coming it is just such a treat to jam along with them. @@relentlessmercy8949 In my opinion, The Pot is a fantastic intro song for Tool because of its relative simplicity. It's more conventionally hooky, which lets it act as a fantastic bridge between your more typical 4/4 stuff and Tool's rain man style of writing. Forty Six & 2 and Sober are really good for that too!

Schism is a quintessential song for learning polyrhythms. Each instrument is playing in a time signature (almost never a straight 4/4) and rarely are they all playing the same time signature until they lock up in the bridge & then again in the outro.

Maynard's vocals during the first few minutes of Lateralus form a fibonacci sequence. The number of syllables progress to the sixth step, then back down to the first step; up to the seventh step, and then back to the fourth step: [1] black [1] then [2] white are [3] all I see [5] in my infancy [8] red and yellow then came to be [5] reaching out to me [3] lets me see [2] there is [1] so [1] much [2] more and [3] beckons me [5] to look through to these [8] infinite possibilities [13] as below so above and beyond I imagine [8] drawn outside the lines of reason [5] push the envelope [3] watch it bend the fibonacci sequence shares a relationship with phi, the golden ratio. The golden ratio is used to describe spirals, which are mentioned several times in the lyrics: "swing on the spiral of our divinity and still be human", "spiral out, keep going" twice, and "spiral out, keep going." five times. Also, Keenan first begins singing 1 minute and 37 seconds into the song, which equates to 1.617 minutes (the golden ratio = approximately 1.618). But despite all that, I believe there's a prety good chance that not only the song, but the album Lateralus is aimed at the ideas of alchemy, especially due to the fact that the philosopher's stone often serves as a spiritual metaphor to evolve from a lower state of imperfection and vice (symbolized by the base metals) to a higher state of enlightenment and perfection. References to this spiritual transmutation are: "give away the stone. Let the oceans take and transmutate this cold and fated anchor. Give away the stone. Let the waters kiss and transmutate these leaden grudges into gold." ~ the grudge "black then white are all I see in my infancy, red and yellow then came to be, reaching out to me....Lets me see". ~Lateralus if seen in this perspective, the part from Lateralus can either refer to the four colors of the philosopher's stone during different phases of creation, or to the colors of the ingredients themselves (i.E. Black = mercury, white = salt, yellow = sulphur, red = stone). But let's not close our eyes to the infinite possibilities ;-) it is also believed that the same line refers to the order in which infants start to see colors. The infant theory is strongly referenced in the book "The Giver," about a secluded utopian-esque society with many secrets. It is suggested that all within the society are fully color blind. Slowly the main character begins seeing colors, the red of an apple, then the yellow of the sunlight, like an infant awakening to reality.

I mean the grammy's are trash. They're literally a popularity contest and artists can buy votes by taking the voting members of the RIAA on lavish trips giving them gifts etc etc. That's why someone like beyonce has 100 credits on her album, all those people can vote for her as long as they're credited one more time that year. The grammy's are a joke.

A tip the bass is the closest thing you get to a beat. The guitar and bass are typically the rhythm section. They change time signatures and continuously come to points on time in unison. Tool as a whole, everyone takes leads and holds rhythms vocals included. Maynard counts syllables to keep parts in rhythm. This band isn't just a rabbit hole it is the rabbit hole.
