I probably heard my first Cure song at 17 in 2001! I didn't really actually get into them until probably a couple years later. I've seen them live twice since then and I can't tell you how glad I am to have discovered them and similar musicians through new bands who were around in the early 2000s. I will forever be jealous of those who got to experience the Cure when they initially debuted.

A little story for you that I read on Roger O'Donnell's blog a few years ago. The Cure locked themselves away at Boris's house in the country to create Disintegration. All the music was finished but they were waiting on Robert to write the lyrics to go with the music. Robert quit talking and went off by himself to write lyrics. When he returned, he walked into the studio and sang all the songs of the album at one go. Roger said it was so stunning that he'll never forget it.

One go? That's unbelievable. But then again, is Robert Smith who we're talking about. That man is a poetry machine. Thank you so much for watching and taking the time to share the story with me. Cheers!

@@tonywhitburn you can still access the blog via the wayback machine. You should do a reaction The Cure's album, called Pornography, that was released in 1982. Robert Smith intentionally wanted to make this album sound like somebody's worst nightmare, it's so macabre and haunting. It's cathartic in a sense, just letting it all out and not holding back. You have to go through hell before you get to heaven.

my favorite song on the album changes somewhat frequently but I think Untitled has been my favorite more times than the other songs(if that made any sense). to me it is perfect at the end bc it seems to represent acceptance after all the feelings of nostalgia tragedy and depression across the duration of the album. It makes senes that Prayers For Rain - which addresses depression as a person - should be followed by the double-suicide fantasy The Same Deep Water As You. (A song which could move Robert to tears on the 1989 tour, but which he struggled to even remember in '90 and '92). Disintegration was deliberately pitched in an uncomfortable key for Robert - but judging by live versions it was remembering the words that caused problems for him Homesick may or may not feature Tolhurst's only contribution to the album - certainly he was the impetus for it Robert seems to have psychological crises at close intervals - both Seventeen Seconds and this album were prompted by ageing-related crises. In fact, impending mortality and a sense of failure seem to be his two overarching themes as a writer. Next in the series: Bloodflowers, which is re turning 40, and [parts of] The Cure 2004, which are re the disassociative identity disorder which suddenly afflicted him during the sessions.

My impression from the song 'disintegration' is that he is a man who has substance abuse issues and that "we both if us knew how the end always is" means that she also knew what she was getting into vis-a-vis the relationship. "It's easier for me to get closer to heaven than ever feel whole again" meaning that it's easier to check out and drown in addiction than to persue a wholesome and meaningful life. To have a meaningful life is to feel whole. Addiction is easier. . . . well that's what I have always took from this song.

The cure were huge influences on a lot of modern bands, but this albumn came out in 89. Radiohead first album came out in 91, they were both leaders and contemporaries of like 3 totally different musical schools. Also, the guitar line on the last song was copied by Corey taylor of slipknot and stone sour on the song "bother" by stone sour. It's the vocal line on the hook.
