Eagles “Take It to the Limit” !!! At the top of my all time favorites. That was Randy's song . He started to write it and they helped him finish it. The girls all loved it when he hit those high notes at the end. However he had trouble hitting them and finally it got to him. He had been drinking with a couple of girls the night before concert and he refused to do the song. He left the band..... From Songwriter---->("Meisner famously rejected attention. He was fine being a background vocalist while his other bandmates took on frontman duties. Naturally, when “Take It to the Limit” gave him a starring role each night, he started to suffer from anxiety. “I was always kind of shy,” he once told Rolling Stone. “They wanted me to stand in the middle of the stage to sing ‘Take It to the Limit,’ but I liked to be out of the spotlight.”)

He was actually very shy about singing solo and this was his last tour with them. Can you imagine being shy about singing with a voice like that? Anthony B. Schmidt came into the band after he left as the bass player and could also sing the high notes. Check out his "I Can't Tell You Why" - it's another awesome one.

Emma, I am so happy to see you take on another Eagles song. One of the things about them is that they all sang lead on different songs, with the exception of Don Felder. He's an excellent guitarist, but he couldn't meet their standards for singing the lead. Although he contributed to the harmonies, to which the Eagles are famous for. He did have a solo hit called "Heavy Metal." Thanks again, Beautiful.

Don Felder did sing lead vocals on Visions from the One of These Nights Albums, and he wanted to sing lead vocals on Victim Of Love from Hotel California. Felder's vocals were records, several times I have read, and Henley and Frey felt Felder's vocals just weren't up to the band's standards. Supposedly, the band's manager took Felder out for a meal, and Henley's lead vocals were recorded and used on the album.

In the Eagles documentary, Meisner at one point asked the leaders of the band (Frey and Henley) if he could stop performing Take It To The Limit during their concerts because he had anxiety about hitting the high notes, which were difficult (the high notes he hits in the studio version are insanely high). They countered that fans came to hear the band's hits, and that song was basically his one big one with the Eagles, so they told him to suck it up and sing it. And he did. Until he quit the band and was replaced with Timothy B. Schmidt, so co-wrote arguably the band's biggest hit ballad, I Can't Tell You Why.

I met Randy when I won backstage passes to POCO. Super nice guy, quiet and very friendly. My wife was in the navy and broke her wrist while rollerskating, just a couple of days after she got home from the 1st Gulf War. He thanked her for her service, and as he was signing it, said he wished it was a war wound he was signing for! We and the rest of POCO, all laughed!

I was a teenager when the eagles made their first album. They did something that few groups could do and that playing great music that touched all age groups. My parents loved the Eagles. They disliked rock and roll they came from the big band era. Not many groups from the 70s did that. Great talent.

Many people don't realize this song was one of their concert favorite and most requests of all the Eagles great songs. If you listen closely you will hear the Fans constantly cheering and clapping throughout the song and especially at end. After Randy left the band it never was requested that much even when the Great Singer Vince Gill joined the band and sang the song. This was Randy Meiser song that nobody could sing it any better.

So grateful I got to hear Randy sing this on this tour, in Chicago, in Oct. '77. He 'hung it up' w/ the group soon after, when he felt unable to adequately perform this song due to physical ailments (gastric in nature, I think) brought about, in large part, by the stress of being on the road & separated from his family. Glenn Frey didn't care, & insisted Randy do it anyway, which led to a major confrontation between them, & Randy's subsequent 'bagging it'. What a loss, especially after also previously losing Bernie Leadon, their 'most-countrified' member. IMHO, they were never the same, even though they still continued to enjoy quite a bit of commercial success. BTW, if you'd like to hear another great R.M. vocal, I recommend his rendition of "Take the Devil (From Your Mind)" off their first-ever album. It was considered by some ( OK, by many) to be be an excellent 'stoner' track. I was one of them (& still around to tell the tale. -- amazing !)

If you really want a treat listen the the Ian Matthews version on his "Valley Hi" Lp produced by Michael Nesbeth. The entire Lp is GREAT. That's where the Eagles got it from and which they used to warm up backstage until the crew told them they needed to do it ON STAGE. Was written by fellow Alabamian Steve Young about a road that runs south out of Montgomery.

An "iconic" band indeed, just as you said, Emma. Thank you for choosing it and reacting to it! The Eagles were another American band that was founded just at the right time to still put a heavy emphasis on vocal harmonies. Anyone who is biased - it's quite impossible NOT to like the Eagles. This is the kind of music we will still be listening to in 50 years from now. A bit of trivia for those who are interested: Glenn Frey had an occasional sidegig as an actor. "Glenn Frey, a co-founder of the Eagles, appeared in an episode of the TV show Nash Bridges, he also starred with Don Johnson on Miami Vice."

A friend asked me if I wanted to go to a presentation by Jane Fonda and Tom Hayden about their trip to North Viet Nam in 1972. It didn't really pique my interest until he said there would be two bands playing after their talk. We had never heard of either band but went just to check them out. The first band was a local (Dayton, OH) one who was excellent. Then this other band came on and just blew us away. We all agreed that they would be a band to keep an ear out for. A week later the song, "Witchy Woman" showed up on the radio and I've been a fan ever since

Randy's high notes were basically the reason he left the band after this tour. One night in Memphis he wasn't feeling well they had been touring for weeks already and he told Glenn Frey I don't think I can sing tonight. Glenn told him in no uncertain terms the fans pay to see him sing so he either gets out there and sings or hit the road. After the Hotel California tour was done Randy decided to leave the Eagles. He was replaced by his understudy from the band Poco he had left to join the eagles several years before by the name of Timothy B. Schmidt. Schmidt was brought in specifically to sing this song which he could do but out of respect for Randy Meisner eventually refused to sing the song himself, Glenn Frey eventually ended up doing it but he didn't do the high notes at the end like Randy or Timothy could do. Randy was great and a wonderful human being from what I hear about him. RIP Randy.
