Rush constantly evolved their sound throughout their entire run. 😁

Rush was always able to recreate the studio version live with samples of the parts (usually with loops on foot pedals) that they couldn’t play while playing their primary instruments. Phenomenal musicians who put out great music during their career’s.

There are several interviews where they talk about how they wrote and produced their songs. They talk about how they didn't record songs that they couldn't play live. When they got to the point when they thought about adding keyboardist, they decided that their close friendship was more important as a trio. Because of this, they figured out how to write parts where each of them would pick up the different additional parts through foot pedals, triggers, and playing multiple instruments live. There was no engineer playing tracks, the band played or triggered everything. Now the engineer might switch what was trggered for each song, but the band actually triggered it. For example, in the original performance of 2112, both Geddy and Alex have double neck guitars, and Geddy had his keyboards and a set of foot pedals. Alex had a 12 string and the six string on his guitar and Geddy and a bass and an electric 6 string on his. Alex switches between the 12 and six, using his effects box for all the parts he's playing. Geddy plays bass and keys while he's singing, but during certain segments he switches to the 6 string to play rhythm, bass foot peddles and triggers sounds on the keyboard, before jumping back on the bass and playing keys in between.

One of the musical highlights of my life was seeing Rush play live at Wembley Arena, 1983 I think it was. I only saw them the once, but the gig has never left me, I regard it as the best I ever went to. My favourite band to this day, having discovered them during the mid 70's. There is no one else like them, when I've been asked by those who don't know them, "Who are they like ? ", the only answer is, "Rush !" One of the few bands able to reproduce the sound of a studio recording live on stage, and going musically were few others could follow. Simply the best. With respect to your question about 'Were they a single band?'. I think the answer to that has to be NO. Following some initial success with songs taken from their debut album 'Rush' the following albums, 'Fly By Night' and 'Caress Of Steel' didn't do so well and were heavily panned by the critics. The record label, I think Mercury in those days, pressured the band to record more 'poppy, single friendly' songs. The answer from Rush was '2112', about as none single friendly as you could get. They thought they were going to be sacked by the label, and so their response was to want to go out, all guns blazing and flags flying. A "F$*K YOU" on the way out. 2112 is I think it's true to say, regarded as one of the most important albums of the time, and one I still listen to and enjoy. They did have some minor single success in the UK with songs like 'Spirit Of The Radio', but it was never what they were about for Rush fans. It was always the albums and live shows. A band most people had never heard of could fill Wembley Arena for 3 or 4 nights in a row. RIP The Professor 🥁

I have been a RUSH fan since high school and later introduced my girlfriend (now wife of 40 years) to RUSH, which became her band. To me, there is a band that reminds me and other RUSH fans of RUSH: BAND-MAID. Their pursuit of excellence and musicianship while having fun with their fans. Neil, RIP. You are remembered.

Actually the record companies got what Rush gave them, especially after 2112. They never pandered to the record labels.

actually Geddy Alex or Neil trigger the synth lines with free hands or feet so nobody outside the trio makes the music live
@GM-MarkOfExcellence2 ай бұрын
NOPE! If the company wanted a single, they gave them 2112! AND sorry, sir. They are playing the synth on stage. its with triggers and foot pedals
