I take the first ride on my 1978 Yamaha dt250. This bike was sitting for years and was locked up when I bought it. I cleaned it up, and fixed everything on it without spending any money. Will this motorcycle move when I attempt the first ride? #Yamaha, #Vintage, #250cc,

Amazing mechanical skillset you have, much respect. As a seat cover guy, the first point I would like to share is that duct tape should never be put on foam. When the tape gets yanked off some of the foam might come with it and the glue left behind makes it tough to stretch and smooth the real cover on properly. Use a black plastic garbage bag stretched over the seat and tape it to itself on the bottom. Attaching a cover to a metal base is done either with a skinny piece of rubber with a slit that holds the cover to the edge or triangular metal cut into the base that have to be bent to pierce the cover after it's pulled tight, and bent back to secure it in place many times around the edge. Again, your ambition and skill level are remarkable and the best of luck on all of your adventures.

that would make a great first bike for some young teenager, he could learn how to work on it by re-sealing the tank, putting new rings and piston on it, new brake cables and throttle cable, that ole thing probably has many more years left in it. for further cleaning of the tank, stainless .177 bbs with some acid should get it nicely rust free, will then need sealed of course and let to cure. i love the old air cooled bikes, they dont make the power and the suspension and brakes arent nearly as good as these modern dirt bikes, but they are reliable and last a long time, and us short people can still touch the ground!

I am officially jaw-on-the-floor impressed. If you can fix that, you can fix anything. I am in the market for a utility quad and decided to buy a neglected or broken one to save money. After it is fixed I will also have no doubt about the condition of a lot of components. And - no payment on a dirt toy that's gonna get broken anyway!!

Joe, first I love your videos because you lay out such good diagnostic thinking and backtrack when you need to, to correct a problem . That is a huge value for us in the DIY realm. Your insights and clear thinking are really helpful. I like the way you talk us through your thinking and arrive at the next step to investigate. Second, I need to better understand the valve measurement using the precise spacers or shims. Maybe you can hit that again sometime - doesn't apply to this one I know. Thanks for the great breadth and expertise on the channel

Vinegar works great in gas tanks if you have the patience...me personally I like instant results. Go get a bottle of muratic acid from the Hardware store...its actually made for etching concrete but works great in rusty gas tanks. Pour it into the empty tank, let the acid sit on one portion of the tank at a time...for instance...let it sit on the bottom, then turn it and let it sit on its side, then turn it and let it sit on the other side. Do five minute intervals with it. It will clean that tank up like brand new! After the acid does its job...drain it, then neutralize it with water and baking soda...otherwise it'll flash rust. Hope this helps you!

For the gas tank, bungy cord it to the back wheel of a lawn tractor. jack up back wheels on stands and let run with nuts in tank like you did. Carsand Cameras showed me that trick. they did it on a z50 tank. worked pretty good.

That is the beauty of these 70's two strokes. Not the most complicated machines on the planet and real workhorses. They could be sitting underwater for years and with a little love, a shop manual and a part or two from ebay....you're doing wheelies down the street with a duct tape seat and half a break.

Way to go....this bike is a great candidate for a full restoration. You should go for it and make it a whole series of videos. I did a 1977 YZ125 (similar) and surprisingly 95% of the O.E.M and New Old Stock stuff is still out there. I was going for complete original so it took some waiting and hunting for a few of the parts but eventually they show up on EBAY. I'd be happy to send you pictures of the before and after. I didn't do it on youtube sadly enough though. Keep the content coming.

Man that is awesome that you got it to run so good. It really surprised me. It seems like it may have even improved a few more pounds on compression by running it. A brand new ring would do wonders. If you could get a over sized piston and dingle hone it some more it would be great. Or have it bored. It runs pretty decent the way it is so far. Just a new ring would be an improvement. I wonder how much compression it has since you drove it some. It looks like it quit smoking a lot. Where I live 150 dollars is cheap for a motorcycle they go for thousands of dollar around here. You just cannot even find one for sale. Yeah I know you brought it a long way but really they just are not available here where I live unless you got a couple grand.

I had a 1973 ďt250 which my dad bought brand new when he was 20. He rode it for year until he could afford a car then it sat for over 20 years until I started riding it as my first bike. I deleted the oik injector and put new points and condensor on it and rode it for 10 years until I bought modern bikes. If you turn the stator plate clockwise or counter clockwise, it advances or retards the timing.
