The name plate is From Denmark. It says "Byggeår" It means Build Year in Norwegian/Danish. The stickers are also in Danish. It would have been Baujahr in German. Gas cap says "Use Castrol 2-stroke oil" in Danish. The engine was made in Sweden, judging by the stamp on the flywheel. These where known as "Pedal Assisted" Mopeds, you would pedal it up to speed, and use the speed/momentum to start the engine. It was normal that these where so weak that you had to pedal going up-hill. the most common one was known as the Tempo.

Yeah, sad ... but this has to be replaced anyway. You cannot rescue leather that sat maybe 30 years in a barn and dried out, is full of fungi or who knows what. A saddler can do a restoration, meaning a rebuild of those parts. Anyways, this is THE essential part of the Mofa, as you sit with your backside on it, hehehe:) This has to be functional. And what do you mean with "collector"? There are thousands of this kind in use in Europe and maybe 10k of them still in barns and garages. They are not rare. Yeah, they are oldtimers, but it would be a shame to not make them running again and drive with them on the street.

Some responses from ChatGpt: Key Observations 1. Motor Plate (First Image): • The text includes “1958,” confirming the production year. • The plate mentions “Strandmotor” (possibly Estrand Motor or related), indicating a manufacturer or engine licensing company. • The Danish term “Byggeår” means “Year of Manufacture,” suggesting Danish involvement or a market-specific model. • “Licens HMW” points to the engine being produced under license from HMW (Hallein Motorenwerke), an Austrian engine manufacturer known for supplying small engines for mopeds in the mid-20th century. 2. Fuel Tank (Second Image): • The “Castrol” oil cap is consistent with mopeds of the era, which required 2-stroke oil mixed with gasoline. • The sticker below seems to include Danish writing, possibly a certification or registration marking for use in Denmark. Possible Identification This is likely a 1958 Danish-assembled moped using an Austrian HMW engine. The frame and other components were possibly locally manufactured in Denmark, while the engine was licensed from HMW, a common practice in the 1950s for smaller markets. The “Grand” branding may have been specific to the Danish market or a distributor. Manufacturer • HMW (Hallein Motorenwerke): Known for small-displacement engines, frequently used in mopeds across Europe. • Danish Connection: The presence of Danish terms suggests local assembly or branding for Denmark, possibly through a company like Estrand Motor or a similar assembler/distributor. Would you like assistance in locating more historical information about Estrand Motor or HMW-based mopeds?

Cant say exactly what model it is from a glance in the first minutes of the video, but its common on older scandinavian mopeds for sure. I found this online. Grand Mopeds Denmark. Dansk Cykleværk Grand, A / S, Nr. Åby, established 1891. Mopeds were built from 1955. They had a close relationship with SCO who supplied engines and frames, and in some cases complete mopeds which were rebadged. SCO later acquired the Grand factory in Aaby.Grand models included: Grand Junior K 320, SCO engine. Grand Minor K 322, SCO engine. Grand Sport K 308. Engine: BFC. Universal, BFC 2-speed engine Senior, BFC 2-speed engine Grand Knallert Other models used BFC, Sachs, Derby and Diesella engines, some of which were very limited production. Danilo: Grand built mopeds using the Danilo brand powered by JLO engines slung very low in the frame, below the pedal crank, driving the rear wheel via a friction roller. A two-speed gearbox was operated from a tank-mounted lever. Moped production appears to have ceased in the late 1950s, and the firm closed in 1974. So, again, this is online and everything above is just cut and paste into this comment box.

That carb float should have a wire soldered on the edge of the hole and the needle goes past it, so you can set the float height. The wire acts as a kind of a spring, keeping the float set to the needle. That's propably the reason why the engine doesn't rev as high as it should.

The engine looks like a Sachs to me, which is a german brand as well as the Bing carburator. If I recall correct I repaired one of those like 30 years ago by replacing a gasket ring around the shaft as it dropped oil onto the clutch dryplate, which had a similar effect as what you were facing. It might be the case that kick starting it that you have to use the thumb lever on the right hand side to get out of bicycle mode. Some mopeds had that as the design idea was that you should be able to pedal on it as well with those early mopeds. An other important thing with handshift engines like this is to adjust the gears wire to optimal positions too. Ratio 2 stroke oil: gasoline is 1:25 for those old machines.

You might wanna give it a little pedal assistance here and there when you take off just intil you get the rpm's up. Then it should max out at 40-45. No, scooter are the ones with body cladding. You can have a similar bike with no pedals and no cladding. They can be called mopeds or just simply a light motorcycle, depending on the cc of the engine and local regulations, etc.

As A Swede I have to inform that the Moped is actually originated from Sweden, then it was adopted in the later 50s into English, german, and other countries. A moped is a motordriven 2 wheel vehicle with an engine with a maximum of 49cc. Originally it was with pedals (motor+pedal shortened to Moped, but then it later became the name for all 49cc motorbikes, even without the pedals

Grand Mopeds Denmark Logo Dansk Cykleværk Grand, A / S, Nr. Åby, established 1891 Mopeds were built from 1955. They had a close relationship with SCO who supplied engines and frames, and in some cases complete mopeds which were rebadged. SCO later acquired the Grand factory in Aaby. Grand models included: Grand Junior K 320, SCO engine. Danilo. Grand built mopeds using the Danilo brand powered by JLO engines slung very low in the frame, below the pedal crank, driving the rear wheel via a friction roller. A two-speed gearbox was operated from a tank-mounted lever. Moped production appears to have ceased in the late 1950s, and the firm closed in 1974.

Be sure to mix the oil 25:1 or just use 24:1. I imagine the bearings are brass sleeves instead of roller bearings.

It's not German, but Danish. The info on the gas cap says "BRUG CASTROL 2 TAKT-XXL I BENZINEN 1:25" translates as "Use Castrol 2-stroke oil in a 25:1 (gas to oil) ratio" -- benzinen is gasoline -- so it's about twice as much oil per volume of gas as a modern two stroke engine. Definitely a moped, and since you were able to move the pedals in the proper direction the engine isn't seized. The shifter says "zweigang handschaltung" or two speed manual transmission.

Hey there. In Germany this bike is called: „MoFa“ (under 50ccm) for motorized Bicycle. Next bigger class was the “Moped” (above 50ccm). Also a interesting brand is “Zündapp” or “Kreidler”. The ignition part was nearly the same construction on all bikes like these. Regards from Germany. Let me know, If you need some information about the history of this brands and bikes.

Sorry, but this is bullshit. Both, mofa and moped, is under 50 cc. The difference is that the mofa is restricted to 25 km/h and the moped is restricted to 40 km/h until 1986, 50 km/h from 1986 til 2001and due to european regulations 45 km/h from 2002 until today. Also this was the regulation only for Germany.
