Nice review - thanks Ray. I think like cycling power meters the options offered by power metering are great and NOT just for elites. Running at a controlled power output could certainly be the way forward to getting a new PR.

The real important question, putting apart the fact that stryd and garmin gave different numbers; Is Garmin consistent with its measurements??? Thanks for your answer Ray

Interestingly Garmin just released a few updates for newer watches for trail running. descents and vo2 max which is great. When I regain my motivation I will have to try it again. Bloody covid.

Having a garmin 645 with power calculation. I miss how to calculate the 5 power zones that the app makes available. Is there a test? How to distribute the percentages of watts for the 5 zones? Thanks Pino

I don't know how much this matters, but my FTP for my bike was around 276, and my critical power for my last 5K was around 280. Both events were around 20-30 minutes. I know there are many differences in how power is measured between the two sports. However, it seems to me that in general, I am able to put out around 275 watts of power weather that is on Stryde, My power tap, or any and all of the gym equipment that I use that measures power. All show that I can put out around 270 watts over 20 minutes. My point is if I am running with a Garmin pod that tells me I am putting out 350 watts when every thing else is saying 270, I think I am going to lean more towards the Stryd data.
@brandenblume4514
@brandenblume4514 Жыл бұрын
270 watts is the work you can sustain with primary lower extremity muscle groups, with little core, and little upper extremity. Just like your VO2 max will be different for different sports requiring different muscle groups. Also your training status/ efficiency will effect the threshold at which Lactate production shifts to a higher rate than the rate of the metabolic cascade to usable ATP

Seems to me that like you said the variability only matters if you switch devices. But wouldn't you just run another FTP test to "calibrate" your zones to the new device anyway. Even with my cycling meters that are much more consistent from one to another I would still take an FTP when I switch. I guess the only issue is if you have different devices from one bike to another or one shoe to another when using a pod like Stryd. But how hard is it to move the pod right? Thanks for the review and especially for showing both the hilly and flat courses. Great data!

@Dcrainmaker
@Dcrainmaker 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, as long as you have a Fenix 6 and the Garmin RD-POD, you can install the Connect IQ app and get things installed. It tends to be consistent, though it's hard to know if it's accurate, as there's no standards on how to define running power.

@Dcrainmaker
@Dcrainmaker 6 жыл бұрын
They won't natively be available, but any 3rd party CIQ app can utilize them. Given how silly easy it will be for someone to create a Running Dynamics app using just the samples, I'd imagine you'll see it come to the VA3 about 4 hours after it releases.

Hi, when you say that the stryd data lines up with bike power data, is that a kinda perceived effort thing?
@Dcrainmaker
@Dcrainmaker 6 жыл бұрын
Correct. The 'suck factor' for me to output 300w on a bike roughly aligns to 300w on the run. But really, that's just a quirky human brain thing that I like that it works out that way. There's no valid science behind that.
@paulbarton957
@paulbarton957 6 жыл бұрын
DC Rainmaker Yeah, thought so. I got a Stryd to review and was impressed how the data seemed reliable / consistent with itself and was never sure how ‘true’ it was, or if that mattered. Kinda stopped using it mostly as it didn’t mesh flawlessly with Garmin experience - I guess the Garmin Power will!

I guess a bit late but what's the difference between this in a foot pod?(of course from garmin)
@Dcrainmaker
@Dcrainmaker 5 жыл бұрын
The footpod just provdes pace/cadence (and then the watch calculates distance from it). Whereas the RD-Pod transmits cadence and the running dynamics metrics like vertical oscillation. But interestingly it doesn't provide pace/distance.

The only difference between the tri and th run is that the tri supports swimming too, so yes it has the same running dynamics. The fenix 3 hr does have connect iq so I'm assuming that if the vivoactive hr is getting support so would that watch.

Hey mate could the gap between Stryd and Garmin watts be the Stryd Form Power value? I usually get a form power in stryd of about 70-90 watts and I understand stryd calls it power that is used but not to propel you forward but rather for oscillation. Maybe Garmin doesn't separate out "form power". Would be interesting to see if that makes sense on your test run
@Dcrainmaker
@Dcrainmaker 6 жыл бұрын
Nah, form value is different. Garmin noted going into it that they expected my difference to be about 20-30% high.
@ffmdotcom
@ffmdotcom 6 жыл бұрын
DC Rainmaker would be really interesting if we get more details as to why there is such a big difference. But once Garmin releases we can have a closer look - but as you said running power isn't really running power and as long as it's consistent for one self it's a great training tool - will be also interesting if stryd reacts in any way

my gut feeling is that the garmin is reading too high for whatever reason. The reason I guess is that I trust cycling power should be pretty accurate and I don't see how running is so much mechanically better allowing you to produce more power. But I'm no engineer so just my guess.
@xGshikamaru
@xGshikamaru 6 жыл бұрын
Bruce Chastain since you are upright while running you're already producing more power just based on that. You recruit many more muscles just to propel yourself foward.
@adam999444
@adam999444 6 жыл бұрын
Can't you just look at average power and compare to calories burnt to determine which is more accurate?
@Dcrainmaker
@Dcrainmaker 6 жыл бұрын
No relationship to calories, as that doesn't account for running efficiency - which impacts power. Also, averages can be 100% wrong and still match. Meaning, an average is just that - the average. Units can be way over and way under, yet the average makes it the same.

@jnygaarddk
@jnygaarddk 6 жыл бұрын
Very interesting! Q: You touch on it a bit in the end of the vid, cycle pwr vs run pwr. For an athlete like yourself, shouldn't you be able to tell which is more correct, by comparing HR and cycle power?? I mean, 500 vs 300 watt for 15 minutes (as it looks like we are talking) should give a very significant HR diff. 2nd thing. What about weight. Does either or both company use that for the calculation? Assume you have the same programmed in, if they do?...
@Dcrainmaker
@Dcrainmaker 6 жыл бұрын
+Jesper Nygaard That assumes there’s any relationship at all between cycling power and running power. As creatures of patterns, we prefer/like there to be. But in reality, that may not exist.
@jnygaarddk
@jnygaarddk 6 жыл бұрын
I guess, what I'm trying to say/ask, is that there must be a relationship between power and VO2 max, no matter what kind of pwr we talk. So if you have an AT of 350w cycling, how can you produce the oxygen to burn 500w at AT running????
@Dcrainmaker
@Dcrainmaker 6 жыл бұрын
The challenge is the effort to put out that power varies by circumstance and body efficiency. That's why there's so much talk about running efficiency. If you have wasted power going somewhere, that'll impact things like pace at the same power. With cycling it's a bit more straight forward.
