When your drilling use a pecking action releasing down pressure every few thousandths and the chip will break eliminilating a lot of the strings

Hello Junkie, you are doing just fine as an apprentice machinist, you’re on the right track. If you wanted to accurately locate your holes squarely and parallel, try using your edge finder. Install the edge finder in the collet, turn the machine on bringing the edge finder to the edge. It should be wobbling before you touch. As you slowly feed in, watch until it runs true, then go a smidge more till it jumps, then stop! Go to your DRO zero that axis X or Y. Do the same on the other axis, zero the DRO on that axis. By doing that your holes will be dead on! For what you were doing you did just fine, you just needed to be close. Use 4 flute endmills for steel and 2 flute for aluminum. Get yourself a millstop too, so when you’re doing multiples in parts, you only have to edge find once or indicate once because everything will locate against the stop. Anyway I’m impressed with you quite a bit, for somebody new at it, you seem to have a lot common sense! Keep it up! AMACTOOLS

AMACTOOLS Yeah thanks for the information I have a work stop and all that stuff now I’m just slowly learning how to do the stuff I kind of like teaching myself to get better every time but you know I got a lot to learn I’m not saying I’m great at anything but I haven’t broken anything or fuck some shit up yet so I feel pretty good about that in the stuff I’ve made has fit and worked so it’s not that bad

get that edge finder out next time and dial that hole pattern, eye balling for a drill press not a mill

I see a few comments telling you to try climb milling. Most bridgeports dont have ballscrews and therefore you really shouldnt climb mill on them. You can do light cuts climb milling with a little bit of drag on the table locks, but not really heavy cuts. It looks like that might be a conversational mill so it may indeed have ballscrews. Also, just a small suggestion; a two flute endmill probably is not the best on steel. A four flute would be better. Also I know a couple people who have de-gloved some fingers grabbing chips, especially chips in motion. Be careful, not fun. If you dont know what de-gloving is, google at your own risk. As others have said, pecking the drill eliminates the long chips most of the time.

Cool vid Justin. I use a Snakeclamp(magnetic base) clear guard to throw the chips into so they gather in a nice pile. I hate the chips cutting up my boots. They will also gouge your wood floors if you forget and leave your boots on when you get home. I agree with Mrbstnredsoxfan32...climb milling gives a better finish and burr free. I typically conventional cut until my final cut or two then climb. I also don't remove much material for my final cut. I'm also curious if the Snapon drill bits will outlast other drill bits. Could be an opportunity for a tool order and comparison vid!! lol Thanks for sharing.

For aluminum you're going to want that thing spinning about as fast as that Bridgeport will go, and I would recommend climb milling versus conventional, gives you a better finish, I run a couple big cncs at work, for aluminum you definitely want the 3/4 endmill going as fast as it will let you, I typically run mine in the 10-12k rpm range unless it's got a big radius. But the point is, for aluminum, you want them endmills going pretty fast. That Bridgeport is pretty badass man, you can learn a lot with those.

The Snap-On Junkie!!! I would definitely wear gloves though, the burrs on machined aluminum are razor sharp, I always wear cut resistant gloves, it's too easy to get really deep cuts, regular mechanics gloves would be better than nothing but the ones we get at work have a cut resistant rubber coating on them.

I also forgot to add on the edge finder! When you zero out, you have to add .100 of an inch, half the diameter of the edge finder, if it’s the 200 hundredth thousands type, if it’s .500” it’s .250 you have to add!

when drilling lift off the pressure then drill then lift off then drill then you wont get them long string chips that try to rap like a helicoptor, you might want to check out ABOM79 channel, AND NEVER GRAB THE CHIPS WHEN THERE TURNING IF YOU WANT TO KEEP YOUR FINGERS !

Junkie...swear to God, don't grab at those stringy chips bud...I work in a shop full of manual and CNC machines....it's a huge danger....a stringy chips can wrap around your finger and cut the snot out of you, right to the bone...they can even take a finger off....also...that's if you're lucky...if you're not lucky you'll get your ass wrapped around d that spindle/quill and die...be careful man...keep learning and practicing but be careful

You keep trying to grab that chuck with chips attached to drill, you wont have to worry about having fun with the mill. Thats literally like putting a 1,000 razor blades in your hand and somebody ripping them out of your hand. Stop that machine, let it come to a stop or use the brake, then use a pair of needle nose to get them off. Yes, they will take your fingers off and yes they will gash you to the bone. Learn to peck drill and it wont do that. Dont even reach in with the brush or anything if those are on there and spinning. I seriously hope you learned this before something bad happens. Look up photos of people that want to learn this the hard way, gloves, ugghh, thatll literally peel your skin from your fingers and leave the bone and tendons, these chips will do the samething.
