"The Amiga had the best silky-smooth graphics and it was the perfect platform for The First Samurai. It was a groundbreaking arcade adventure for its time and a proud moment was when it won an Amiga Format 'Gold' award. Amazingly, the Japanese games maker Kemco loved it so much when they saw it they sent their development team over to see how it was done. This ended up as one very long night in a Turkish restaurant, with our guests learning the finer points of belly dancing. The food was pretty good too!" -- Teoman Irmak, graphic artist (First Samurai, Amiga)

The Amiga version of the game is the best one, mainly because on level 9 - there's 3 way multi scrolling!

Same here but I beat the game. I also coded using AMOS, then AMOS professional (it contains a compiler too => faster), then Blitz Basic.

The maps in this game were pretty weird, with stages 1 to 4 all being one large map. Some of lv4's pickups are visible early on in lv1, the place where you fight lv3's crystal ghost bosses is directly above where you fought lv1's boss, and you can freely re-enter a previous level's area in several spots such as the detour into lv2 during lv3 in the vid. Other levels were combined in the same way. Good playthough :)

After all these years, I finally know why I'd get stuck on so many of the levels. Those sparkling things weren't items waiting for me to find some hidden trick, they were teleporters! Thank god we had a cracked version with level skip or I'd have never seen 80% of the game. The guys in the modern levels who mocked you before throwing grenades were great

@mevdinc9 ай бұрын
The SNES version was developed by the publisher Kemco for the Japanese market and yes, it is very different and a little more difficult too. I also personally prefer the Amiga version. :) You are welcome to read all the details in my book, Life Is A Game.
I spent 10 wonderful days in Japan in 1993 as Kemco's guest. I really enjoyed my time in Japan then and I revisited the wonderful country in 2023 and stayed for 3 months! I am planing to come to Japan again sometime in May, 2024.

@nebularain33384 жыл бұрын
I agree. The sound effects are of fantastic quality, but they are very over the top, are played far too often, and create a very garish soundscape.

Horrible gameplay in poor 25fps... lame game
@plopparici31102 жыл бұрын
@Frontier Turrican2, ShadowBeast, BattleSquadron, Elfmania or Lionheart proved that 50fps games with lots of sprites are possible on the Amiga. However, many other games have proven that 50fps does not guarantee good gameplay, and that in 25 it is also possible to make very good ones. Anyway, First Samurai, like many Amiga games, has a mediocre gameplay, slow, lethargic, and it's not a question of framerate, but rather of programmers who were very strong technically, but who didn't know anything about gameplay, unlike the Japanese programmers of the time for example. I totally agree on the huge mistake Commodore made by not having enough ambition with the Amiga 1200.
