As a Florida native who, like you, had the privilege to see the Indian River Lagoon back in the day, as has already been mentioned and I can with a broken heart confirm, the vast majority of the IRL is a dead zone and a moonscape. I live in Jensen Beach and fish from the St. Lucie River and Inlet to the Mosquito Lagoon. Except for a few pockets close to the inlets that are still barely hanging on, the entire estuary is in full ecological collapse. I've pretty much have given up on the IRL since it won't be fixed in my lifetime and likely never. I now plan my fishing trips to the Nature Coast a few times a year. Planning on moving to Crystal River when I retire. Keep on keeping on. My wife Judy and I enjoy your videos.

nice to see you getting back to your roots. I live an hour drive of where you dove on this film. This water quality issue is the reason why we dive/lobster/spear the more southern spots in Florida. There's been a lot of issues with water quality here in recent years. A lot of people claim it's coming from the Port (Canaveral) because the grass flats near the port has had some serious difficulties with bacteria, algae blooms, fish kills and other situations. it used to be a great fishing area, struggled for a few years and is now slowly coming back.

What you experienced during this dive with the zero vis is....., well....all I have to say is, "Welcome to Georgia". Unless you are diving in the crystal clear creeks and rivers here in North Georgia (which are icy COLD), the major lakes and bodies of water in Georgia are pretty much exactly what you just portrayed. Hard to even get a bite now. The sheepshead this year we’re abundant and most reports I got said it was a better year than many recently. Then the summer came and viz dropped off. Diving the bridges and the relief bridges were a little too sketchy for me plus the fish were small. Then comes the hurricane…I live off the grand canal/ banana river and the water has been terrible viz ever since. Spent 2.5 days trying to line fish the area 2 weeks ago while a buddy came to town and got one small sea trout. The fish are gone! I fly a lot up and down the east coast and the water coming out of all the inlets is a disgusting brown color. The kahones you have to dive to the bottom in that viz is astounding. That’s crazy to hear your from mims, I’m over here in NSB and we dive the docks and bridges inshore all the time. It’s definitely not the easiest diving but it’s exactly what your said it’s something to do when you can’t get out offshore. The colder water and incoming tide definitely play a huge factor as well with the water quality. 🤙🏼

such a small world! never got up that way to dive but did a ton of flounder giggin in my younger years.

@@KeyWestWaterman Yeah, your not wrong about that. Anyways it’scool to hear you had this type diving growing up. It’s definitely a little hard to get anyone in the water with us bc it is a little different than what most ppl are use too. I don’t know to many ppl that like diving in water that sometimes you hit your head on the bottom before you see it😂

Aaron my father in law who lives on the Indian river in Titusville for 30 years now claims water treatment plant dumping and NASA are big pollutants of that river . Manatee numbers have decreased due to the lack of grass etc. Still see dolphins and a few manatees , not like 10 years ago . Don’t know how you got the courage up to dive in that water . I have caught decent size Lady Fish under that bridge . Big fan of the channel , cheers .

My old haunt for fishing. Some of the NASA/Military guys (fishing in restricted areas) in 70's and 80's pulled monsters out and around Mosquito Lagoon. Back then bridges held large black drum (20-30 pounders), trout, red fish, and large sheepshead. Sad to see vis so bad. Indian River lagoon needs some help!

We live here in Cocoa now and were excited to watch this video but finished it disappointed… Sad to say it was expected. We gave up fishing the river not long after we moved here and just go off shore now. It was nice to see what it’s like down in those waters though. The way they are treating our rivers is so sad.

I like that "carbine" speargun. Shorter length woulld not only be good for shorter ranges but easier to swing around in close quarters like mangroves, tight reefs, etc.

Can't win'em all. Sometimes you can't even win half. A day in the ocean (even with complete mud water and no fish) beats the hell out of a day in a cubicle that's filled with existential dread.

I've shot lots of sheepshead, mangroves, black drum.. I have seen quite a few cubera there too. Lots of snook and Tarpon as well but obviously we don't shoot those. Also there's a manatee that shows up a lot. Could be some cool footage 😎

Good episode. I have had problems with too long a gun in the bad viz. i suppose money is the only answer (more guns). I find sitting on the bottom can work… the problem is when the fish get close enough to see you they scare so you have a super short time window. I will have to try your shadow technique feel stupid for not thinking if it myself

That spot looks so good for fishin' with a rod. It's sad that there are no fish left there. I've heard about the Mosquito Lagoon and Indian River having lots of water quality issues, they closed redfish there if I'm not mistaken. Word is that the turtle grass has died. Very sad. I remember reading about the area when it was a great place to fish. Thanks for showing us the reality of the situation. I like your videos even if you get skunked.

Florida man hates the cold. I'm from Sarasota but stuck in the NC foothills for now and it's already too cold for my taste. I gotta get back to the saltwater, but I'll probably go to VA Beach because they let us grow stinky little plants there and FL isn't cool like that. Plus it's actually warmer there than here usually and the fishin' is pretty good.

This video is interesting and a change of pace for this channel. I think the water quality has improved in the last year. The content creator, for the most part, seems to be an experienced diver and underwater hunter. That being said, as a lifelong spearfisherman in Florida, I can tell you that he broke a cardinal rule by getting out of the water with a loaded and cocked speargun. That's a bad accident waiting to happen.

I’m mostly fishing in the Indian river. Gotta get down by fort pierce and the water quality/vis improves a lot. Been spearfishing a couple backwater areas near the inlet there and would recommend it highly over this area (wabasso causeway?). It’s always so damn murky up north more.
