Brass is an alloy of copper and zinc. Through electrolytes the zinc will dissolve and the valve will leak or disintegrate.

Either I’ve got a massive case of déjà vu or you’ve already done this once before. Either way, the amount of barnacles is staggering. Definitely take a drill with a long round brush attachment and make sure your thru-hulls aren’t full of the little buggers.

How long do you think that paint is going to last? The blisters will continue forming if you don't let the fibreglass dry out.
@dancampion3 жыл бұрын
I'll just keep touching it up as it gets damaged. I'll give it another coat next I bring it out of the water. I'll also just keep repairing the blisters each time I have it on the slip.

With regard to valves for through hull applications bronze is far harder and more corrosion resistant than brass. Bronze fittings will almost certainly be easier to obtain at a Marine Chandlers whereas stuff you buy from an ordinary hardware store is probably only brass. Brass is invariably cheaper than good quality bronze but not ideal material for marine fittings.

Was that a brass valve from Bunnings? If so you CANNOT use that in salt water! It will turn into sponge!
@dancampion3 жыл бұрын
Tell that to the brass valve from Bunnings that's been below the water line for over a year. Still going strong
@zedthehun3 жыл бұрын
@@dancampion Brass has two dissimilar metals in it. Stick it in salt water and it WILL corrode. You need Bronze. That is why they use bronze. But be a smart ass... LOL. Your boat.

@@dancampion If you need to save a $ doing it you are better off with decent quality PVC ball valves. Whitworths used to be a good price. I've been out of it for a long time, used to work with Jim Swanson quite a bit way back when! Good luck with it!

You painted a boat with house paint? I hate to seem negative but it seems like a wasted effort.
@dancampion3 жыл бұрын
There's nothing wrong with using house paint. In many ways it is easier to use, it's easy to get a consistent finish and when you inevitably scratch it, you can rub it back and touch it up, unlike two pack paint. You're not negative, you just can't think outside the circle

It is a $870 US Dollar boat, no need it putting a lot into it, just yet. I might have let it cure longer but I won't argue with what was done. I am sure it was costing money every hour it was out of the water.
