Hi from Ralph in the UK. Just a suggestionpn fitting your rings., the ring with you put in the centre groove , may I suggest that is the compression ring and the shape of the ring is called a ridge dodger and is designed to miss any wear in the bore that has heavy wear in it, as anew full sizwd ring will hit the ridge and break mon contacting the ridge first time it comes up the bore. Allso if you slide the shell bearings in you minimise the risk of geeting dirt trapped between the rod as the new shell scrapes any dirt out as it rotates into place. I have replaced both main and big end shells in situ without removing the engine or crank Many a time when a crank looks bad, it is often the material from the white metal bearing and comes off the crank easily with parafine and wet and dry. Place a roofing fent nail in the oil hole of the main bearing journal and wind the shell out, replace the same way. Good content keep up the channel and lo0ok after the squirrels!!

The hydraulic filter gets clogged often. It’s a washable metal filter. 3 bolts remove the cover behind the rear left wheel. Slow or whinny hydraulic response is usually an effect that reminds me to clean mine. Good luck with it. You can’t kill that thing. It’s a tank.

Loved this small John Deere tractor engine rebuild, very cool. I noticed you didn't take your right angle air sander with a 100-120 grit sanding disc to the flywheel surface in a swirl pattern to do a "backyard resurface" where the clutch disc engages it. Wouldn't that have helped the clutch hold a little better for awhile? I just know I've seen a lot of very inexpensive engine rebuilds of all kinds where the flywheel on a go-kart all the way up to a big piece of machinery wasn't surface turned on a lathe but they went ahead and put a good swirl scratch pattern on the clutch mating area to take a lot of the smooth/polish out of the steel for more clutch grip.

Did you check the ring gap in the cylinders? I think that's a pretty important step before you put them on the pistons. If it's too tight, you can file the ends of the ring to get it right so they don't hit when they expand from the heat.
@andrewthecelt3794
@andrewthecelt3794 Жыл бұрын
I wondered why no piston ring scrapers in the last episode? Was that a hacksaw blade to clear the ring lands? Just a touch with the pointy bits and you're getting oil blow by on the rings like holes in a colander.

Clutch tool: Get a long bolt or threaded bar . . . Wrap tape on it for the crank bearing size then tape on for clutch plate size and use it to line up/assemble the clutch. Be careful with it as its only tape. . but wrapped tight it works fine. Fill all filters if possible. So much better than cranking and cranking. The rest is exactly what I would do (I'm not perfect . . just my 10cents worth) Sounds good, just remember she's got s/h crank and old pistons etc. . . so won't be sounding like a Rolls Royce . . I'd be soooooooo happy with that. You saved a fortune there

I think those old Fury's were great cars, I had a 1968 Fury 3 4 door. About 5 weeks after it (a demo car), I pulled it into my carport and fine tuned it, I then loaded up my wife and young brother in law and took them back to Colorado where I grew up. I also took them up to top of Pikes Peak. The trip was from almost sea level (Orlando, FL) to 16,410 feet above, with no problem on regular gas, a 318 single carb.

Great job on the assembly. I work single handed on almost everything. A trick I use to make assembly easier is using a couple pleces of threaded rod or bolts with the head cut off as guide pins. Makes it much easier to mount heavy flywheels and clutch plates.

It would probably be good to replace the hydraulic oil and filters at this point as well. I don't know if yours has it but there should be a cleanable pickup filter that you should clean as well. It looks like the hydraulics are working smoothly so you could probably get away with not replacing the oil. Also check the oil in the front axle. Looking forward to seeing that move some dirt.

The sharp knocking sound you get on start up is actually the fuel igniting when the engine is started some diesels the ignition pressure in the cylinders can be over 1000 psi in the cylinder. Compression ignition style. Sounds good .with good maintenance it should give you some good service. 😊

Oh, the familiar sound of that two-cyl Yanmar click-klacking away. Brings me back to humid summer mornings, trying to mow most of the yard before the heat got bad. Or the rain came. I grew up operating one of these as our main mower. Family bought it new in the 80's, and it still runs to this day with nothing besides seasonal maintenance and fluid/filter changes. Slow as hell but I'm sure it'll be around long after I'm gone. Thanks for bringing back memories of home, guys.

On the hydraulic pump on the bigger Yanmars they use a shear pin between the gear that drives the pump and the shaft. The idea of course is the pin shears off if the pump locks up. and then the pump is not turning even though the gear is going round and round. I recommend checking there first.

As an ret Omc Corba / Evenrude OB. boat mech. we used Lqcuar Thinner for gasket remover much safer than what you did for gasket removing Good gasket sealer!!!. also next time get a dead blow hammer not a metal hammer for motor gear and piston wrest pin assembly you can flar out the end of the wrest pin usung what hammer you used! I have seen to many broken gears because of the wrong hammer being used and wrist pins flared.

You may know this by now! In 1961 when John Deere started using hydraulic controlled power steering! The first sign your hydraulic oil is getting low is equipment will not raise all the way up. In your case your loader will not work correctly. So you know in 1966 I started helping dad on his farm. The tractor I run the most was a 1965 4020 diesel. I also run a model 70 john Deere. The model 70 is a 2 cylinder. (Johny. Popper)

Be sure and check your thermostat, my little 650 had a spring fail and overcooled real bad, it’s easy enough to check with a laser thermometer on the thermostat housing, these little Japanese diesels normally run about 60°C. ✌️

I am a new subscriber and I also am a jet acft mechanic and master mechanic. i work mostly on old classic cars and my John Deere tractor as you do. I enjoy watching you two work on things because you have the same relationship that myself and my wife do, we are coming up on 57 years together. Doing things together helps enrich the relationship and makes you stronger. Keep up the good work and I will sit here at 0430 with my coffee and enjoy you two. Thanks!

A piece of old ring makes a good scraper to clean out piston ring groves. Deep sockets clutch alignment tool. Now you got a big clean spot. Nicely done, thanks for sharing.

Having assembled thousands of pistons into gm blocks, I may have missed it but I didn't see you check the gap and alignment of the ring end openings. We always made sure the ring gaps never lined up with each other. Also the oil ring rails should not align with the opening on the oil ring or with each other.

It's been a long time but the only time I ever remember replacing a rear bearing was if it had spun but then it wrecked the housing too! Air has always been the bain of those mini-tractors hydraulic systems the lines are so small any little bubble will air lock them. They are sweet little rides tho I live just a couple minutes away from John Deere's main tractor assembly plant in Waterloo, Iowa, my cousin worked his whole career there.

The neighbors had one of those with belly mower. Their kids ran around on it all the time, had a one bottom plow and plowed gardens with it. All the boys left home and it was still running.

we have an 850, with a 3 cylinder. great little machine. they are noisy little engines .. but yours sounds a little extra loud, make sure there is no air going into the inj pump from the fuel tank/filter - that would also make it hard to start. new fuel lines probably wouldn't hurt too. .. you may also have a bad fuel injector causing fuel knock. after its running and warmed up, run the engine at high idle and crack each fuel line, ONE at a time, just a little and see if the noise gets better or worse with each cylinder, little diesel fuel additive might help loosen up a sticky fuel injector too.
