That gearbox was obviously a good choice! That thing scoots along rather briskly :) You could try a Supertrapp on that exhaust? Opinions seem divided on love them or hate them, but they are compact and tuneable.

It’s definitely geared perfectly for this setup! I’ll look around and see if I can borrow one off of someone but I have to do something, it’s louder than jawbreaker with a stinger.

A spark arrested on that exhaust will quiet it down. I heard you say you needed to adjust the reverse lockout plate. Just remove it all together. It’s not needed with that style shifter. Cars looking great man.

I’ll try a few different things and see what I like best, thanks for the input! On the 73, I needed to have the reverse lockout plate to help space things properly. After messing with this a lot, ended up pulling this shifter out and putting a different one in. Appreciate you being here!

Thank you, I greatly appreciate that! I like the style but timing is an issue. I ended up putting 4 black lines on top of the pulley, 0,20,20 and 30 degrees. Makes timing much easier.

@VWJawbreaker I have a question for you. The last mechanic that worked on my bug shimmed the endplay on my crankshaft. The engine is wore out, I asked him what the total shim thickness was, he wouldn't answer, now it has a bearing clatter when you let off the gas assuming it took out the thrust bearing on the main. It's got the original 58 trans 4.37 gears? 27x8.5r14 tires, shifting at 10 mph over stock shift points, spedo reads 3 mph over true speed, I don't think that equals to over 5k rpm, might he be owing me a motor.

@@campervanbug7658 if the main thrust bearing is moving on the case, adding additional shims is only masking the problem. The only way to know for sure is to pull the flywheel and see if the main bearing is moving when you push and pull on the crank pulley.

Hope you all don't mind if I ask a question here? I just had work done on my 67, 1500 single port, including new plugs and wires. ran great 1st 2 drives. Yesterday pulled out, and after a 1/4 mile was running on 3 cyl. Went home, found a plug wire (#4) off. Reconnected, still only 3 cyl??? Could I have fouled that plug running about a 1/4 mile? I'm baffled.

I absolutely do not mind at all! Could be a fouled plug or something else. I’d leave the engine running and carefully pull a plug wire off of the distributor cap one at a time. You will hear a difference in how it runs with each plug wire you pull off until you get to that problem cylinder. Could be the plug, could be a wire, could be valves.

It’s a bus shifter. Doesn’t work well in an early bug as you can see.
