In this video, I get my abandoned DeLorean started for the first time in 32 years! We also discover what the inside of the engine looks like, some original and nasty engine parts, and what the original owner left in the glove box. This was an amazing experience for me and I hope you love the video! Enjoy! Big thanks to Kyle and Uncle Wayne for letting me work on the car in their shop!

The "belts" around the inner door handles are on early cars, Oct '81 and earlier. They were original factory installed and were meant to help shut the door. On later cars they were mounted to the inner door itself as the loop style pieces would commonly fall off when opening or closing the door and you wouldn't even realize it! Mine were looped around when I bought it but I have since modified it to be permanently attached. I got a document that helps with the mod if you are interested I could send it to you

I love that Alex thoroughly checks the engine and puts stuff in the cylinders before turning it carefully by hand Too many people on KZbin destroy old cars because they throw a battery on it and just let 'er rip, needless to say I don't subscribe to channels that do that. Alex knows his stuff and he treats old technology with the care it needs. This is by far and away my favourite car channel.

22:49 - The belt is from the factory! They found the door handles could be hard to reach when the doors were up, so for early cars, they just looped those straps through the door handles. Later cars had a built-in slot bracket for the straps, but they are supposed to be there!

I think this is the best episode you guys have made. Opening the glove box was quite literally back to the future. And it really does look like you lucked out and found an owner who loved it so much he parked it when he couldn't see enough to drive it, just couldn't let it go... you know he drove that thing carefully. This is a perfect barn find and an iconic piece of both automotive and cinematic history. I'm envious, I wouldn't ever sell it either.

My theory is that the car didn't sit for 32 years in the barn, it just time travelled from 1991 to now. That would explain why the seller needed non-refundable money upfront - to hire some specialists to make it look dirty and unused as if it sat for for 32 years :) I bet the previous owner is actually a time traveler, the thick glasses are to protect the eyes from the time-travel radiation

That air filter is a good indicator that that car was driven a lot on back roads. On a dry day, if you driving behind someone on a dirt road, your air filter will look just like that. What’s alarming is that it looks like it was never replaced. That might mean that car was not kept up on maintenance. Just a thought

You are lucky this car was in a humid environment for the 32 years. That is why the wire insulation, rubber, leather, interior plastic etc. is still good/flexible. I have rescued many 2nd gen f-body cars in Colorado and because it is so dry all of that has to be replaced. You have mold to clean off instead of having to replace everything, good trade off.

Greetings from a Delorean Owner. Really great find you got there. Some comments on your video: 1. The turn knob on the center console is for turning down/up the brightness of the gauge cluster 2. There are some pretty good videos on here explaining how the K-Jet works. please don't just throw on a carburetor. Once the K-jet is well maintained it's a pretty reliable system. Most important thing is that the fuel pressure is correct all the time and that the injectors have a good spray pattern. A good way to start is to remove the fuel distributor and clean the plunger inside of it. But be very careful, once the plunger fell onto some solid ground, the chance is high that it will be slightly damaged and not longer usable as the surface has to be 100% perfect without any dents. Checking the spray pattern of the injectors is a pretty easy task as well. You have to jumper the fuel pump relay (next to the fuse box) so the fuel pump is running all the time. Pull the injectors and put them into glas jars and as soon as you have a jumpered the fuel pump you can depress the air metering plate (where you already sprayed the starting fluid). This should prime the injectors and you can check for the spray pattern (of if there is any fuel at all). 3. Deloreans were known as pretty unreliable cars back then. Most of those prejudices were caused by electric problems the delorean had. Nowadays there are some pretty easy (and not really expensive) fixes available online for the delorean. First thing you should do: Fix your ground connections and optimize them (good way to start are the "delorean get grounded" videos here on yt. Next step would be to clean all those little connectors that are ignition-related. Even if the car runs for the moment it could happen quite fast that you'll face electrical problems here. Another important thing is to replace all the fuses in the fuse box and clean the connectors there. The fuse box is right above the battery compartment underneath the carpet. 4. You should replace the coolant reservoir as soon as possible with a new stainless steel one. Those original piece you got there is known tu burst as the material gets brittle over the years. Furthermore it's recommended to replace the old coolant hoses with new silicone ones. Most important thing to keep the PRV engine in a good condition is a good working cooling circuit. I'm thrilled to see the progress of your car :)

Nice work, Alex! As far as the reality of losing your vision and stopping driving because of blindness, I can testify that it really sucks when it happens. I had the same scenario happen to me, as I am now blind, at age 52 (since 46) and had to choose to stop driving before it got too bad. I had a Mk4 VW R32 that was my fun car, and selling it because of my vision loss was one of the hardest reality gut punches I had to work through. Good luck with everything, and enjoy driving! PS- I am not neglected by any means, as I "suggested" to my wife that she get the blue Audi she's always wanted, though I pointed her in the direction of an S4 so I get to ride in it.

The wheels and body panels were possibly made in England - Delorean factory would not have its own wheel foundry and unlikely to have a panel press shop due to the investment cost - so these scrap parts could have come direct from suppliers who had cancelled orders when Delorean went bust.

Those straps around the handles actually are factory, the early Delorean models simply had straps wrapped around the door handles while in the later models the straps were made to have their own fixed place in the door near to the handle. Also just note that the automatic Deloreans are actually rarer than the manuals, since out of the 9000 built only 1000 were automatic, so who knows how many are left now. Also side note for when you start the engine, check all the fuel lines as since they are all most likely original they’ll be made of rubber and probably damaged and cracked at this point, so I would highly recommend replacing them before you try and start the engine. Really happy for you guys since you found an absolute icon

Really nice find! BUT you should check that oil gets to all cam cams and rocker arms! It is a very common problem on these engines when they have been standing for a long time with old oil in them or if service has been neglected, the holes that spray oil on the cam's are very small and easily get clogged. I ALWAYS check this before I start up old engines that have been standing for a long time and especially on these PRV engines! Good luck with the car! 😊

Don't knock Bosch K-Jetronic. It's pretty robust and straight forward to diagnose. Biggest problem is vacuum leaks. Once you get that sorted, the system usually starts with a flick of the key. One nice upgrade would be braided fuel lines if they are available. Most European makes came with them standard.

Awesome, the DeLorean is such an amazing story from how the factory was set up and how it all fell apart at the end. Can’t wait to see more of this, I would be like you, saving all the paperwork in the car, that’s it’s history and the fact it is basically a one owner car is a dream. Andy UK

I love how excited Alex gets over the cars. My favorite movie car is two cars. The trans am from night rider and the dodge from dukes of hazard.

Great job ! Excellent specimen right there. Loads of parts are available in the USA & Uk. DOOR STRAP was a factory install. Later ones had a groove in the plastic and a leather strap too. Nice barn find

Actually the early cars didn't have straps. This was an add on accessory from DMC. At some point they offered the straps in this style that wrapped around the door pull, but I'm not sure if it was standard or an option. Later cars had a built in strap in the door in front of the handle that was screwed on.

I get excited by the documents, too! I bought a 1941 Packard Model 110 Touring Sedan. When I got into the glove box, the original bill of sale was in there, as was a tire inspection form from during WWII. Since rubber was rationed, you had to prove the tire was worn out. The REALLY cool thing is that the form lists the serial numbers of every one of the original tires. Including the spare. Oh and all the tires passed, no replacements. Also, the wife's Connecticut state ID, a metal plate, listing her birth date in 1878. I can not tell you how cool the owner's manual is.

Congratulations! The video, your excitement and enthusiasm are wonderful. On a side note: The name Legrand on the zip-tie is a very old French electrical component manufacturer. They are still known for producing high quality electrical components. That’s why all those cables are in such great condition after all those years. So, don’t cut those Legrand zip-ties just “release” them and put them back on to give the perfect finish to your ultimate barn find. Looking forward to seeing her coming back to life - she’s in safe hands.

Quick tip. When I'm vacuuming around the engine bay or down around seats and I don't have or can't find my small nozzle adapter, I just place a long skinny funnel over the nozzle and it works great for getting in hard to reach areas.

a little tip for cassette tapes, if you find some. first forward and rewind them before using, it does two things. It give you the check if the tape itself is not rotten out, it lines up the tape in wind correctly again and then good for use.

It's referred to as toll booth window. For drive thru, you open the door. Power lock motors can fail and you can be locked into the car. We either disable the auto locks or put in a Wings-A-Loft system. Also a current Oct 81 owner. Also, adding a second ground cable helps...

This is absolutely great! I have always thought DeLoreans were cool but I've never actually had the chance to see one in any sort of detail like you are showing us. I'm totally invested to join your journy with this car. I have enjoyed your other car content but for some reason this is by far the most interesting and fun for me. Looking forward to the next episode. I'm thinking that even if the sending unit is grounded and falsely showing a full tank you should drop the tank and clean out any old gas residue. That fuel injection system takes me back to working on a friend's Volkswagen Scirocco 25 years ago.

Those cylinders are extremely clean considering that it most likely ran on leaded gas for the majority or entirety of it's time on the road. Alex, I also need to thank you for helping fulfill my younger me car dreams! Although I had a Fox body Mustang, you working on that red one was the first video of yours I saw....then you went straight ultimate with the Grand National.... and now it's a time machine... I mean DeLorean! Thank you for those builds and so much more! 💙👊🏼

Unleaded gas was more than available in the 1980s. Leaded gas had a nasty habit of ruining catalytic converters. No, the condition of the plugs, the nice, even carbon in the pistons…. This car was run on the gas it was meant to. With the improvements of today’s fluids, I would hazard that this car, when all the lines are replaced, should last for a lot longer than the older vehicles did back when.

I have a 79 Subaru, it still runs on leaded gas now and then, because I live right next to an airport and to refuel with 100 Low Lead I just have to drive into the parking lot and stretch the hose over to the car. Much easier than driving 20 minutes to the gas station. It is and always was a non-catalyst car. The cylinders look in amazing shape, even being chrome plated aluminum cylinders. Never seen an issue leaded vs unleaded except for lead fouled plugs.

Hi Alex really enjoyed the Delorean videos so far and as a Delorean owner of some 30 years completely understand the big smile on your face and your enthusiasm for the car. Some great advice regarding the car in the comments, watch out though for the rubber fuel lines from the accumulator, if one of these splits the car can be lost to fire in seconds. My Delorean was first registered in Florida before being imported to London England, that's were I purchased it and drove it back to Belfast, Northern Ireland. I have been to the factory in Dunmurry Belfast and was lucky enough to do a couple of laps on the original test track. Anyway if you're ever in the UK you can come and stay with me in sunny Northern Ireland, good luck with the car. Norman
