I was born and raised in China and came to the US after high school. I was taught that no one is above the laws and therefore should not attempt in any way to break the laws. There is no harsh or not so harsh. There's only right or wrong. I've been in China for 4 years as an expat and haven't had any problems following their laws. It's always weird to hear talking heads spout off about a country they don't know anything about. In the vast majority of cases, China has quite a lot more physical freedom. I've literally seen people in shoving matches with cops get to walk away. There's almost no punitive action for traffic violations, and I can count on one finger how many times I've seen someone pulled over by the police. No one gets shot here by the cops either. They have a lower incarceration rate than the US. They got in trouble because they were NCAA idiots who likely got caught on CCTV and then admitted guilt to the Chinese authorities. They are also going to get let go since China is still trying to build its own basketball relationship with the NBA and NCAA.

I agree there's "physical" freedom but when it comes to Political freedom like freedom of speech, that is severely limited. I'm from China myself lived here in the states for a majority of my life and I have a relative who publicly spoke negatively against the communist regime and got thrown in prison for 20 years. That doesn't happen here in the U.S. and it's one of the reason why my family and I immigrated to the U.S. Plus, you don't know exactly that they have lower incarceration rates than the US because the Chinese government controls information and they don't have to report anything accurately.
