I miss thrifting. Everything here is still closed and we still wear masks whenever we are inside any building. Your video makes it feel like normal has left us behind.

I’m lucky to live in Tasmania, and I feel like it’s one of the few places in the world that is still somewhat ‘normal’. Even compared to the rest of Australia, Tasmania is the place to be right now (being so isolated has, for once, been a very positive thing) and I definitely don’t take that for granted. I hope things start to go back to a new normal for you soon xx

May you find horrible having to wear masks inside a building, but in my country we have to wear them any time we aren't at home. I have to wear a mask 10 hours in a row in order to attend classes, just with a break in between for lunch time, where I can take it off.
@sapphirecamui64473 жыл бұрын
While our stores are opened since last year, and recently restaurants opened as well inside, we have to wear the mask ALL the time when outside - so on the streets as well... :/ or in public transportation (including taxi/uber/metro)...

The tablecloth should be a wrap skirt so that you have scalloping on the bottom of it with scalloped detail going up to the waistband where it's been wrapped over. If you had spare fabric, you could make a matching crop top with the scalloping either on the hem and the waist, or along the top of the bust creating a scalloped neckline with some thin straps!

During my mom's & I first thrift shop of 2021, I found an Ikea PROÄNG chair for 15$ and then some super cute floral curtains I plan to turn into covers for the chair. A literal treasure find since I've always wanted that chair but it's like 100$ for the frame and cushion together oof

I've thrifted for over 20 years and I always buy vintage sheets and a lot of pretty doona covers. There are just gorgeous. I've never made any clothing with them though, just cushions and bags, and I've re-upholstered some chairs. I must try making a shirt or something, except I may love looking at florals but I don't wear them. We moved recently and I have 32 large boxes of fabric/sheets. I think I have a problem, but it's a good problem! 😄
@AnitaSouthall3 жыл бұрын
Just do what I did organise your stash by colour or fabric type? I dumped it all on the loungeroom floor, made crates or boxed for the colours of the rainbow and it was sorted within 90 minutes with extra boxes for black, white grey and brown. Now when I want something its easier to access and use especially for strip quilting and my bag making #Beyondawesomebags on facebook

Thanks. for this lovely thrift shop video Janelle. Always look forward to your show and tells after. Matt does such great camera work. I think you are spoiled for choice in Tassie re op shops. South Aust does have good ones too scattered about the state, but your local shops to be sectioned better compared to the town where I live, which has three op shops. However the other day I did manage to find a very nice queen sheet set in good condition which I can use to make something. Am going to have to book an overnight cabin on the Spirit again before too long so I can plan a detailed op shop tour! Poor husband of mine! 🤣 xx

I forget that op shops sometimes have fabric, and double(or queen) sheets have so much usable metreage, especially if they're all flat, not fitted...might have to start doing the rounds again... Garage sales can also be a pretty decent source for older fabrics and household linens, especially if it's a deceased estate or down-sizing situation. Our local rag used to have a "Garage Sales" section in the classified's...not sure if you have one down there in the Apple Isle, a lot of the local papers on the mainland are being shut down now because...reasons... Those yellow sheets are straight out of my childhood...had a set of the exact same ones in single bed size. It's kind of weird thinking of the 60's and 70's as "vintage" when that was just our everyday stuff...

Hey! New to your channel and I am loving it so far! So, question: how do you tell what material will make a good skirt? I have a few skirts that were made by my grandma. I'm not sure what material they are, but I hate wearing them because they're stiff and bunch up around my legs. Are there certain fabrics that you would recommend for skirts and fabrics you would stay away from?
@wendyfay163 жыл бұрын
Love the first 2 pieces and was so hoping that you would choose them. I managed to find a scoop neck top with spaghetti shoulders, and very loose comfy shorts in a spearmint green and white striped seersucker fabric. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE seersucker and it's sooo hard to find these days. I'd love to make a few sets like this but I don't know how to cut out a basic gathered round neckline. It's basically just 2 pieces with the straps also used to bind the front and back pieces. I don't know if I have to cut the top pieces with a round shape first, and then gather them, or do I cut the top part straight, gather it, and then cut it into a round shape, or do I sew the top straight and then cut the bottom of it into a rounded shape that will make the top part rounded? Sorry, even I don't understand what I'm trying to say, but can you please help? BTW. I'm close to 70 and I remember my mother making heart shaped double sponges for all the church stalls. She would spend the whole day baking and then pack them into a large suitcase. I also used to make the chocolate and jelly lamingtons, and Anzac & cornflake biscuits for street stalls. Shame that they have died out now. The lamingtons were always the first to sell out, but it would have been a lot cheaper to just donate the cash in place of the cost of the ingredients, not to mention the whole day spent baking. The bought cakes taste nothing like the home made cakes .... and you wouldn't dare use a packet cake mix! lol

What a great haul. I recently scored some vintage baking tins for a dollar each. I'm keen to try baking Madelaines. I also bought a patterned Bundt tin which I'm looking forward to trying. Your vintage pieces remind me of my teenage years. In one of the shops you looked at a hot pink and orange sheet, I had sheets just like that on my bed. My sister had the blue and purple version. The house I live in now was my aunt's and she LOVED the 70s. There's still lots of linen and 70s utensils and ephemera here. It makes me happy because I loved the 70s ♥ I've been making bucket hats from bedsheet remnants lately. Today, I mad covers for 3 of my 4 sewing machines from offcuts of curtain fabric. I buy remnants at one of my local op shops for $2 to $6 a bag. It's wonderful - I LOVE OP SHOPPING!!

It's been a year since I could thrift shop but I've been able to get stuff from family that allows me to practice my thrift flip skills (which are minimal). The table cloth reminds me of your last project with that material--a super cute rain coat. That would be adorable as a rain coat too I think. There's so much of it, there's a lot you could do with it like a valance and table runner, coasters, seat covers, I don't know.
