This'll probably get buried but one singer that would be really amazing to dive into would be Garrett Russell from Silent Planet, who actually did scream in a damaging way to the point he messed up his voice for a time, and then he sought training from some other metal vocalists (Sean McCulloch from Phinehas, IIRC), until he was able to maintain his vocals going forward. It's particularly interesting to hear the difference between their first album (Come Wind, Come Weather), and their following albums when he changed his technique to save his voice. I think the first release afterward was Tiny Hands (Au Revoir), which still hits so, so hard (will make you cry if you know the backstory), but you can tell he's refined the technique a lot. It does change the tone and you'll notice some of his more intense screams from the first album are no longer present. There could be some really good insights there, especially if you could interview him (which, I'm sure he'd be up to because he's one of the nicest guys in the world). Personally, that first album remains my favorite by Silent Planet, with some of the most intense, emotional, heart-rending vocals in all of metalcore, with Garrett's soul-wrenching lyrics that carry so much weight. While I'm not religious, I understand the context and implications behind the words and stories, especially knowing Garrett's background....the whole album tugs at my heartstrings more than pretty much any other metalcore album. Still, Tiny Hands (Au Revoir) comes in close...especially the pre-release version (the album version is good too, but it's missing something the first version had). Again, Garrett is a lyrical master and an incredible guy, and I'd love to see Silent Planet get a little more attention. I can't really afford to become a Patron and give recommendations that way right now, but hopefully my comment finds someone that can relay it.
@XavierMacX2 ай бұрын
This is a great comment. It's not off topic because Silent Planet had Spencer featured on one of their last albums. Also they have similarly deep music and especially lyrics, and each band member is a master at their craft, similar to Periphery.

The band that made me into a metalhead! As intense as Spencer is on this track, it doesn't really get across how good he is. There are songs with better clean sections, better screams and growls, and just all throughout Periphery's discography you can hear Spencer's style and how interesting it is. Maybe you talk about it in this video, but he often does this thing that's hard to describe, it's like a very compressed push that lets him hit what sounds like a high note but I don't know if he's actually doing a high note, it's almost like it's just the tone of his voice. Hard to describe, like I said, but there's so many cool things about his style. Absolomb was the first track I ever heard thanks to Rick Beato, and it's still one of his most impressive vocal performances. Of course, I have to say that the instrumentals are a huge part of Periphery. Misha, Mark, and Jake write some sick guitar parts, no idea how they make 3 guitarists work but they do. And Matt Halpern is a beast on the drums.

This is precise dissonance in both the vocals and the music. It's so delicious. It was so satisfying as a an old 70's prog fan to discover that metal has become the most progressive form of music. I like to think that King Crimson has been an inspiration for bands to discard traditional rhythms and adherence to "niceness."
@XueYlva2 ай бұрын
I still listen to 21st Century Schizoid Man and think about how that was probably the heaviest thing the world had heard in 1968. Knowing that the next song after that is "I Talk to the Wind is hilarious because it's a reminder that Black Sabbath was only the first heavy metal band, but not the first to write heavy metal songs. I'm sure no one thought about 21CSM as a heavy metal song though, they were just a progressive rock band that happened to drop a bomb in the 60s lol.
@rocioiribe58412 ай бұрын
i love and appreciate so much how precise you are with your descriptions of sounds. it goes to show there's so much more beyond, "that's so heavy dude" or "that's so cool!" it's motivating me to listen more closely to actually DESCRIBE a sound. when you said the music went from dissonant bundle to lush sound, i'd never thought of it what way before. thanks for really inspiring me to be more precise not only in my listening but also in how i talk about music i love.

I love love love this video. The whole time I’m thinking, I can’t to see her reaction to the smooth jazz breakdown. It did not disappoint. 🤣 Periphery has pretty much become my favorite band over the last few years. Please please please go down the Periphery rabbit hole!!! I know you’re all about the vocals but all five guys are absolutely incredible at what they do.

Just adding my voice to the mix here, you NEED to look at Satellites at some point. I dont think any song from their catalog demonstrates his clean vocal ability better than the last couple minutes of Satellites, its so powerful.

Yes!!! At last! Periphery is DENSE as a first listen analysis. Getting into each album felt like reading the first hundred pages of any challenging novel-it takes time to get a sense for the rhythms and textures and diction they’ve chosen for any given chapter but once you’re a little familiar it all starts to unfold in lovely and chaotic layers. So each song/album clicked at different times but there always something that keeps you there. For me that’s Spencer’s voice. It’s just as thoughtfully arranged as the guitars and drums but instead of tone or riff it’s sticky phrasing and unexpected hooks. I find a lot of prog metal has impressive but somewhat ornamental vocal performances. Periphery, however, is emotionally all in from the get go on every track and it’s so engaging. And while the complex parts are impressive, my favourite songs are actually ones where the vocal lines are highlighted like the super sticky groove of “Atropos”, all of “Crush”, the huge pre-chorus/chorus of “Heavy Heart”. Just so, so good. We are in for such a treat with Spencer, so glad he’s finally received the TCV treatment.

I did not know Periphery was not yet included in this metal journey. In for a treat and very much worth to delve into. One of my favorite prog/core/etc metal bands of the last decade with one of the best drummers in recent metal-history (IMO). Excellent musicians all around.

Yeah we’re gonna need Reptile next. Spencer is a beast
@XeromusPrimeАй бұрын
Would really love for you to do Reptile by Periphery. I believe it is Spencer's best work, his vocal technique in that song is incredible! Either way, super stoked you decided to go over Spencer's stuff, dude is amazing.

Spencer is one of my favorite vocalists. His range is second to none. Such an incredible technical singer/vocalist.

Spencer is an absolutely incredible vocalist, so glad you have finally covered him and Periphery and VERY excited that he will part of your research! The Parade of Ashes is one of my favourite songs ever. With regards to the length of screams/harsh vocals vs length of clean notes, I personally find it much harder to sustain a pure harsh vocal, especially lower, guttural screams and growls. Cleans and semi-harsh vocals are easier to sustain for longer periods of time in general and I would think this is true for most people, but would love to hear others' experiences and see what the research ends up showing!

Spencer Sotelo is one of the best vocalists in rock and metal today. Unbelievable range and power. He would've been my choice to replace Chester Bennington in Linkin Park
@AJTHolt2 ай бұрын
I've been saying that too!
@yuugur6662 ай бұрын
Tbh my choice would have been to not replace and just have many guests. Take their sound and kinda add some Gorillaz flare to it

I always wanted Periphery to feature Chester or vice versa 😢
@alexanderdenison29502 ай бұрын
Part of the reason why the transition back from the jazz section back to the final chorus worked so weirdly well is because technically, they have the same chord progression! That's a huge part of what makes the chorus in this tune so interesting, its a great progression to improvise some jazz lines over, but its a uniquely challenging progression to write a catchy prog metal anthem over.

THANK YOU FOR DOING PERIPHERY! If you feel like continuing down their rabbit hole, I highly recommend Zagreus (from the same album as Wildfire), and Marigold (from Periphery III)
@danny-d0ritoАй бұрын
if you know marigold, have you heard the version they did live in London? the sound quality is still good, but what makes it crazy is the absolute insanity of him going into possibly the highest note a male metal singer has ever hit, even Chester Bennington didn't get that high up in the range. and Zagreus is also amazing. and and and! you can get lost in their endless list of music and be better for it.

to fully understand periphery's style you need to know the band that influenced them (and hundreds of other bands): MESHUGGAH. 25 years ago they invented a new style of metal never heard before, and they are still one of the most important and respected bands in the metal world.

@@TheCharismaticVoice Meshuggah aren't necessarily a band with a lot of vocal 'variety', but the vocals are fantastic at what they do and they sit in amongst VERY complex and heavy music, so they serve it perfectly. It would be awesome to see you react to Bleed or ObZen!

Dayum, first time properly hearing Spencer. Very impressive, great choice for the study. I just realised you haven't reacted to LOATHE a single time on your channel. Now, I don't think their vocalists do anything too special in terms of technique or style, but when everything comes together, they are easily one of the most interesting heavy bands in the scene, the production on "I Let it In" is insane, and their previous work is no slouch either.

Wildfire is the lead single off their last album and frankly is a very Periphery song: not their best, but probably one of the best intros to give someone an idea of what the band is
