One of our garage doors is missing a window pain. I attempt to put a new piece in and learn a few things about cutting glass.

Lee, I really enjoyed this video! That kindling sounded like cedar? I was fortunate, my little brother worked in a glass shop. He taught me how to cut glass. Here’s a couple of tips for you: Put a towel down on your work bench with it draped over the breaking edge and covering the entire surface of the workbench. This will cushion the glass and insulate it from any humps and rough edges. (I think that is why yours broke… a hump under the score line.) Use a wooden yardstick as a straightedge. It won’t slip around like that level did. Listen to the sound of the cutter. If you hear it skip, go over that part again. Otherwise, the crack will jump across the surface and make an uneven edge. Always dip your cutter in light oil before cutting. Once they stop turning you are screwed… just have to throw them away. The teeth on the back are for breaking pieces that are jagged or when making curves. They chip the glass in tiny hunks. The ball is used by lightly tapping the score line on its opposite surface. You should only need it on tempered or thick glass. I just put out a video showing some glass cutting. Here’s a link… kzbin.info/www/bejne/jGK0doJ9rJqGoc0 Now, Do some practicing on that spare piece you have…. It is actually fun! Don’t forget to Oil that glass cutter before you store it…

Thanks Dave! All great info. I definitely figured out after the fact I had a chunk of hot glue or something under that glass that broke. I learned a lot from it. Just hope I put those learnings into use next time. lol Hope all is well!

First of all pad your tabletop. Put a piece of string across your scoreline. Tape the ends of the string down so that it does not move. Now squirt lighter fluid on the string and set it on fire. This will cause the glass to expand on the scoreline. Now slide it so the scoreline is over the edge of the table and give it a gentle push down. This old trick has never failed me.

Thanks Paul! That actually sounds fun. haha I definitely figured out my biggest problem was the surface I was working on. Well, if I come across another pane of glass I'll have to give this a try. If nothing else it'll make good content. haha
