When performing acoustic music, a close audience is a very different thing. Since I was an oboist, for me it required a different type of reed so that the sound was less dynamic and forceful. Further back, in a big Hall, I would sometimes need to produce an almost ‘trumpet’ like sound (especially with Mahler) but in front of a close audience, it’s way more intimate and the audience notice very small detail like key clicks, breathing noises, raspy notes etc. I guess it’s the same for magic. The tricks need to be perhaps a little more subtle and on a smaller scale?
