First Time Driving RHD! What's it like to drive a Japanese car in Canada!

I've gotten a lot of questions about what it's like to drive a RHD car in Canada, so I threw my brother the keys to my Toyota Crown and filmed his first time driving from the wrong side of the car. Hope you enjoy!

just stumble up down for this video so i lived in bc and planning to buy my first car , i did find a manual 2008 right hand drive honda fit i wonder if thats a good plan for me , lmk your opinion

Normally I would suggest that a RHD car would be a fantastic fit but I would look into getting some insurance quotes if this is your first car. Depending on your province, you might find the premium a RHD car can command is just too much to have it make financial sense. I'm an experienced driver in NB and I only pay $400/year more for my JDM cars over a USDM equivalent car. Check my my other video about daily driving my JDM Crown for a year. Is it legal to drive a right handed vehicle in Canada? Can you import one from Japan?

The specific rules vary by province with regards to safety inspections but there is no issue importing japanese cars under the 15 year rule (must be 15 years old min) except in quebec where its similar to the USA's 25 year rule.

Hey I am considering to get in JDM car. Wonder how inconvenient that is for left turn at traffic lights?

The occasional left hand turn is a bit difficult for visibility but 9/10 times leaning over to your left gets back plenty of visibility for you to feel confident in your turn. It's the times the opposite left hand turn lane has someone sitting in a poor lane position for their own visibility that its gets tough to see around them. At the end of the day, the key is don't turn until you're sure you're safe to do so. You might end up taking a bit longer on a small percentage of your lefts.

@@gearheadsyndrome thanks for feedback. Another question is how is it driving on a small 2 lane road where you are next to the opposite flow ? How does it feel like being on the right side in the car and not seeing the oncoming traffic as well ... ? i think the left turns are ok in general, so are the right turns But not quite sure how it feels driving next to the opposite flow... Is "sticking" to the far right hand side of the road is "enough" to make sure i am clear... ?

@@dmitryk2058 Well half of this video was filmed on a road like you're describing once we turned left out of the residential streets. It's honestly much easier than I think you're worried about. If you've driven a car and also sat on the right side of a car, it'll only take a ew minutes to adapt and a few weeks until it starts to feel normal. As for reduced visibility on those roads, if you feel like you can't see oncoming traffic soon enough, then you're most defintely tail gating haha! You can also peek around the right if needed. I very very rarely pass on roads like that but I'm older now and less of a speed demon.
