Ugh! Everyone is right about getting ripped off by missing the final guitar solo. It'd be like Eagles without the Joe Walsh/Don Felder dueling guitar solos to end Hotel California. You should do the Sultans Of Swing lyric video for Brad to get his fix and get to hear the ending solo at the same time. Well worth it!

Looks to me like the live performance must have steered greatly from the studio verson once he went off in the final solo. Which is common. And it would have looked quite off if you know anything about playing guitar.

Thanks wikipedia. Mark Freuder Knopfler OBE (born 12 August 1949) is a British singer-songwriter, guitarist, and record producer. Born in Scotland and raised in England, he was the lead guitarist, singer and songwriter of the rock band Dire Straits. He pursued a solo career after the band first dissolved in 1988. Dire Straits reunited in 1990, but dissolved again in 1995. He is now an independent solo artist. Knopfler was born in Glasgow, Scotland, and raised in Blyth, near Newcastle in England, from the age of seven. After graduating from the University of Leeds and working for three years as a college lecturer, Knopfler co-founded Dire Straits with his younger brother, David Knopfler. The band recorded six albums, including Brothers in Arms (1985), one of the best-selling albums in history. After they disbanded in 1995, Knopfler began a solo career, and has produced nine solo albums.[1] He has composed and produced film scores for nine films,

Mark Knopfler has been solo now for many years and puts out some amazing stuff. Very poetic and reflective. This was kind of a weird video; the sound was a bit off and as other have pointed out they cut off his guitar solo, which is kinda the best part. His picking style is very distinct. This was from their absolutely stellar debut album. Another one without a bad song! Cheers

little talked about fact, Dire Straits is one of just a few musicians who, no matter where in the world you go, if there is a jukebox, there is at least 1 of their songs on it, or at least that was true when you could find jukeboxes anywhere in the world. I personally can attest to nearly 100 countries in which I was able to find a jukebox, and confirm Dire Straits had a song on there and that it received some of my money to play it. In the early 90's, there was a sailor's game in which you had to find a jukebox in the port you were at, and see if there was a list of specific artists known to be on all jukeboxes, on it...then a round must be bought for all involved to give tribute to the bar for having that shared connection to the rest of the world.

Lex - yes, Mark Knopfler is still playing. He ended Dire Straits after their last tour and album in 1991/2, and released his first solo album in 1996, and has still got it! His most recent concert was sold out at Madison Square Garden in September, 2019, and he is currently gathering his band to record his next solo album. We hope he will tour again! In December, there will be a re-release of all his solo work 1996-present, remixed and available on CD and vinyl. This version of Sultans was the 7 inch cut, which excluded a middle verse and the full play out, to make it radio friendly. As many have mentioned, the version from their live Alchemy album is amazing.

Mark Knopfler is singing to a beautiful guitar solo through the entire song. If you don't pay attention you don't realize there's a little bit of uniqueness to every line he's sharing. Cover bands usually need 2 or 3 guitarists to cover what he's playing, nevermind that he's talking effortlessly while strumming. He makes this look easy. The solo at the end ties everything up. The video robs you of the genius of this man playing the guitar. Few can pull this off with his timing, ability, and precision.

Yesssss!!! I hit Like before the video even started!! This is not only one of the GREATEST Rock and Roll songs ever, it's also one of the GREATEST GUITAR SOLOS of Any Genre!!! Yes Brad, you get more of the story from the Lyric Video, and this one like most is based on a Real Life Experience that Mark Knopfler had... But then you miss out on his playing, and frankly he is a virtuoso!! So glad you guys did this one!!❤🤘🏻

First time hearing this was in my high school radio station “Class”. I was 1st period DJ and cut the cellophane and put this song on. It was recommended by my radio station partner Mike “the Cloud” Hersh. Loved it right off the bat, apparently so did half the world!

They cut off the whole ending of that song...that guitar solo on the end is brilliant, you need to find a full version and listen to it. Argh.

Knopfler is from Newcastle, England. Somewhere around the KZbin interwebs there is a great interview/talk between Knopfler and Brian Johnson of AC/DC talking about growing up in Newcastle. Another Dire Straits gem that I've always loved is Skateaway.

I've been playing guitar since I was 3, 45 years now, and his finger picking still blows my damn mind. Amazing musician.

This is a shortened version of the song, but still good. The guitarist/singer, Mark Knopfler, has been releasing stuff, at least until a few years ago, and playing some live shows.

The British rock band Dire Straits disbanded permanently in 1995, and the band members have since pursued different careers: : The band's lead guitarist, singer, and songwriter, Knopfler launched a solo career after the band broke up and is now an independent artist. Dire Straits was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2018.
