Thanks wikipedia. Mark Freuder Knopfler OBE (born 12 August 1949) is a British singer-songwriter, guitarist, and record producer. Born in Scotland and raised in England, he was the lead guitarist, singer and songwriter of the rock band Dire Straits. He pursued a solo career after the band first dissolved in 1988. Dire Straits reunited in 1990, but dissolved again in 1995. He is now an independent solo artist. Knopfler was born in Glasgow, Scotland, and raised in Blyth, near Newcastle in England, from the age of seven. After graduating from the University of Leeds and working for three years as a college lecturer, Knopfler co-founded Dire Straits with his younger brother, David Knopfler. The band recorded six albums, including Brothers in Arms (1985), one of the best-selling albums in history. After they disbanded in 1995, Knopfler began a solo career, and has produced nine solo albums.[1] He has composed and produced film scores for nine films,

little talked about fact, Dire Straits is one of just a few musicians who, no matter where in the world you go, if there is a jukebox, there is at least 1 of their songs on it, or at least that was true when you could find jukeboxes anywhere in the world. I personally can attest to nearly 100 countries in which I was able to find a jukebox, and confirm Dire Straits had a song on there and that it received some of my money to play it. In the early 90's, there was a sailor's game in which you had to find a jukebox in the port you were at, and see if there was a list of specific artists known to be on all jukeboxes, on it...then a round must be bought for all involved to give tribute to the bar for having that shared connection to the rest of the world.

Lex - yes, Mark Knopfler is still playing. He ended Dire Straits after their last tour and album in 1991/2, and released his first solo album in 1996, and has still got it! His most recent concert was sold out at Madison Square Garden in September, 2019, and he is currently gathering his band to record his next solo album. We hope he will tour again! In December, there will be a re-release of all his solo work 1996-present, remixed and available on CD and vinyl. This version of Sultans was the 7 inch cut, which excluded a middle verse and the full play out, to make it radio friendly. As many have mentioned, the version from their live Alchemy album is amazing.

Mark Knopfler is singing to a beautiful guitar solo through the entire song. If you don't pay attention you don't realize there's a little bit of uniqueness to every line he's sharing. Cover bands usually need 2 or 3 guitarists to cover what he's playing, nevermind that he's talking effortlessly while strumming. He makes this look easy. The solo at the end ties everything up. The video robs you of the genius of this man playing the guitar. Few can pull this off with his timing, ability, and precision.
