Now you should react to the longer live version of “Sultans of Swing,” played at the HAMMERSMITH ODEON, LONDON, in 1983 (released 1984 on the album ALCHEMY: Dire Straits Live). It’s one of the best live rock performances ever. All the band members are truly amazing.

Yeah this version cuts out my favorite verse and the amazing outro solo. The missing verse explains that there are some kids messing around and not caring about this amazing music on stage. I think its about how there are amazing musicians everywhere that aren't famous and just playing local bars because they have other priorities, and nobody really pays attention to them.

This video you found faded out criminally early, right at the start of the guitar solo that made stars of Mark Knopfler and Dire Straights. p.s. Part of Knopfler's unique sound is that he "finger picks", i.e. he doesn't use a plastic pick, instead he uses the nails on several fingers of his right hand. This means he can create a much more complex sound - to me this gives his sound a unique blend of spanish guitar and rock. p.p.s. I suggest you ignore the "alchemy tour version" recommendations: you want to be familiar with the original before you listen to reimagined versions enjoyed by some fans.

@@squaaaaak3178 I know right. I was thinking - wait until they hear the end, then it was just that bare little bit and even that they were excited about - what a shame they couldn't hear the best part. I was not a huge Dire Straits fan, but this one sets just such a great mood and was always one I would stop and listen to when it was on the radio. Haven't thought of it in a while. J, you commented on Mark's guitar sound. It's basically a classic Fender Stratocaster (brand & model of his guitar) sound with very little effects added. I think it was the clean, simple sound of his guitar that first drew me to this song many years ago. Amber, you are correct about the band playing for the love of playing. One of the lyrics says "Harry doesn't mind if he doesn't make the scene, he's got a daytime job he's doing alright"

The song is about the Jazz scene in London, probably during the 60's, 70's. The bands then didn't get paid very much, so everyone had a day job.. they'd never rehearse, "but savin' it up for Friday night" . I went to many of these shows back in the day... The band would play from 8pm to 4-5am in the morning. It was a magical time, sadly missed.

Mark ducked into a dive bar in England to get out of the rain. It was almost empty, but the band still rocked the place. He said they couldn't be any farther away from being sultans, but they were playing for the love of playing. You hit it on the head he's describing the band. He does it perfectly, you can picture them.

This version cuts one of my favorite lines, that sort of reinforces your impression. The line refers to a group of young boys in the corner... "They don't dive a damn, about any trumpet playin' band. It ain't what they call rock & roll"

It may not be one of the best lines in a rock song but, 'You check out guitar George, he knows-all the chords Mind, it's strictly rhythm he doesn't want to make it cry or sing They said an old guitar is all, he can afford When he gets up under the lights to play his thing" just written so well, its like you know George and the guy just wants to play good guitar and not be the show off hero. 🤷‍♂️

@@jen_alanfromchicago53 The George and Harry being referred to here are George Young and Harry Vander from arguably the most successful Aussie 60's band "The Easybeats". George Young is the older brother to Malcolm and Angus Young of AC/DC fame. Can't be certain, but I think the line "Savin' it all, for Friday night" is a reference to the Easybeats' biggest hit "Friday on my Mind".

Just to name a few...of many. Edit: and like others have stated, you're definitely missing out on a killer solo that you can hear just getting started. You're missing their greatest performance of this song... "Sultans of Swing" at Alchemy Live, 1978! Extended version, nearly 11 minutes, with an amazing guitar solo.... Everything was MAGIC! The band and the audience were feeling it. This version is so special... with the perfect foil of the lead singer's unique vocal style against the music, the artistry on his guitar, the bass deftly coordinating the pace... building and building as the song goes on, and spurred on by incredible drumming... it is a masterpiece that comes to a monumental and melodic climax to the cheers of the audience! Dire Straits really nailed it that night, giving one of the BEST live performances featuring guitars and drums ever! Credit to the artists... frontman Mark Knopfler on lead guitar and vocals, David Knopfler on bass guitar, and Terry Williams on drums.
