They killed it in 1983 at the US Festival, so I would recommend anything from that concert but suggest "Lay it on the Line", as others have.

Rik, Gil & Mike just an amazing band in Triumph. The drummer Gil Moore also sings lead on a few tracks and is a great singer in his own right. The Allied Forces album is probably my favorite and just brilliant and yeah, they sounded amazing live. As others have mentioned The US Festival from 83 is also a brilliant live recording. Rik still sounds amazing today, obviously not quite that range, but still sounds great and putting out music. Gil is is also the owner of Canada's biggest recording studio Metalworks Studios and has helped produce amazing music over the decades, not just Triumph.

This band was so underrated in my opinion. A three piece band with a guitarist who sings lead (Rick Emmett) and a drummer who also would sing lead vocals and backing vocals (Gil Moore). Sound familiar TWA? Allied Forces is their best album IMO. A classic!

Just know that they weren't underrated. They were top 5 touring acts in the world for like 3 years straight. It's why they were at the US festival (didn't realize this wasn't there. hadn't hit play yet). The top acts at the time in order on Sunday. Quiet Riot, Motley Crue, Ozzy Ozbourne, Judas Priest, Triumph, Scorpions, Van Halen. Triumph was rated 3rd top heavy metal acts at the time. It's how Steve Wozniak scheduled the acts. He wanted to give people a chance to see all the best music at one event. The same for new wave day, rock day, and country day. Rik Emmet left the band when they were on top to do other things. The band tried to carry on but wasn't the same after that.

@@bettyrose959 I certainly wouldn’t say they were at the top of their popularity when Rik left the band. Talent wise, I felt they were underrated compared to how popular other bands were, especially in the early 80’s. Yeah, they sold millions of records, but not in huge numbers like some of the more mainstream hard rock bands of the time.
@bettyrose959
@bettyrose959 Ай бұрын
@@PeterJohnson-l9x It's the opposite. They didn't sell as many records, they were at the top of the Arena Rock bands. They were an act to see, and people did in large numbers for years in the early 80's. They hit the top 5 touring bands and stayed there until Rik left. Because of songs like this. There weren't many better on stage than Triumph was. They were incredible live.

@@bettyrose959 I won’t disagree on their live shows! I’ve seen hundreds of concerts over 40 years but I never felt this band got the respect and recognition it deserved. Maybe because they were from Canada. They were like a poor man’s Rush. And I love Rush by the way!

They are a three piece band from Canada and when I started watching The Warning live. They reminded me so much of Triumph .The lead singer is a virtuosos guitar, kick ass beautiful voice like Dany the drummer sings lead. And is a beast like Pau Also the bass player is killer. Like Ale! They write great inspirational songs and rock anthem with great hooks like The Warning! their performances and light shows are top-notch. I saw them in a l979,1982,1984 and 1985 . I am in a band and my wife is our lead singer and she can hit those high notes,they have a song called Magic Power which is our ❤song. And it’s still on playlist! I am 67 and she is 62 and we still rock!🎸and Triumph has always been one of our favorite bands and the more you watch them, the more they might remind you of our girls!You need to check out their live performance at the 1982 US FESTIVAL in California. First big event sponsored by Steve Jobs and Apple. They stood out at that festival. Triumph is a MOST HEAR for every real rock fan past, present, and future. They are a trio, but some times they use a 4th to help with guitar or keyboard in live shows the song is from 81 but this show is from 87. I think their US Festival show in 83 is their best.

That wasn't directed specifically at them. It was at the whole progressive rock scene. Radio was still heavy Top 40 oriented and these type of songs didn't fit the format. The early 80's is when stations started to include songs over 5 minutes. Because of many local DJ's started playing songs like this and listeners requested them, drawing attention. Genesis, Yes, Rush, Skynard, Ted Nugent and even Zeppelin started to break that 4-5 minute mold on radio. Triumph was in that mix the whole time. Was listeners that don't give a crap about the Top 40 rotations. Listening to the same songs every hour on the hour sucks. Those bands broke that up a bit.

Rush and Triumph, Prog Metal and Anthem Metal, two genius and masterclass virtuoso musician bands from Canada, both trio's (originally Triumph was a trio, IIRC, for more than half their career, but they added a second guitarist later). Both have become my two favorite bands in recent years. I too, feel like I missed out on decades of listening to Triumph (and Rush) "really" finding them so late in life, about 53 years old at the time. The silver lining of having a lot of extra time to surf KZbin during the pandemic which really led me back to both bands. I knew of Triumph and Rush back in the 70's and 80's as a kid and teen, but just a few songs of each I heard on the radio. I really liked what I heard, but since both bands only averaged about 1 or 2 hit singles per album making the rock top 40, I figured that was all they had in them, and didn't chance buying an album to see what else they had, thinking the rest of the songs might be average and forgettable. I was dead wrong, I felt like I was hearing great rock and roll (regardless of sub-genre), really hearing truly great rock and roll, for the first time and all I'd heard before were garage band quality in comparison. But this video is them playing live in the late 80's, and they've brought on a second rhythm/dual-lead guitarist. The song however, is off one of their albums from the late 70's or early 80's. But I'll have to listen to an earlier live version (Check out this song live US '83 Rock Festival) again when it was still just the trio, as to my old ears, this didn't sound like any broader of a soundscape with the extra guitarist than the '83 live performance. I'm sure others below have already recommended some of Triumphs more famous songs, so I want to recommend a deep-cut that is one of my favorite songs by Triumph: BATTLE CRY.

I began following them when Rock and Roll Machine came out (ca. 1977). I always thought they were one of the better bands on the planet. The critics trashed them repeatedly, always comparing them to the well-established Rush. They were so different from Rush. To paraphrase that lawyer joke: What do you call a hundred music critics at the bottom of the ocean? A good start... They were easily as talented as any band, ever. Their music was solid and perfect for arenas, where they really stood out from the pack. Their live shows were epic adventures (they apparently set off the sprinkler system in one arena - was it Cleveland? - with their pyrotechnics, and no one left!). While Steve Perry became a legend, Rik Emmett's voice was called "okay" by one critic. Gil Moore also had a great voice, more suited to the power rockers they composed. And I have heard very few drummers who could create the mountain of thunder that he did, his contribution to their total sound was like Keith Moon's to the Who. Sadly, they got very little respect and very little airplay (many of their songs were too lengthy and complex for radio). In a desperate attempt to find the follow-up hit to Magic Power they sold their souls and put out The Sport of Kings, and it was downhill from there. After Rik left, Gil tried to get back on track with Edge of Excess, but it was never the same.

It was a sad ending to Triumph, they broke up a way too early all over a fight about money, they did 5 big rock shows in 83 and the band never got paid for doing them as the money went somewhere else except them, so Rick Emmitt the lead singer said he wasn't going to do another live show until he got paid and that was the end of them, way to early as they could of went on to super star status world wide.
@mitchelperkins6723

It was not money. Watch the interviews with Rick and Gil. Creative differences hammered on them by the record label trying to tell them who would sing what songs, and difference in opinion on where they would go with music styles ( heavy vs. staying as they were) was another big issue.

This is next to impossible to play let alone sing while playing it. kzbin.info/www/bejne/hGnTXqGLd7SohpI A real under-appreciated talent. As a combination vocalist and guitarist, he is in own category.
