They need to make sure most things are ready before they get there. You don't wanna be setting the bed up while they're there, they need to be gently introduced into the home and be allowed some quiet time, not being badgered with questions and watching you set things up cause you didn't ask before lol.

Sounds like basically “Here’s a kid, we don’t know anything about them, good luck” aaaand that’s how kids end up in bad homes that doesn’t work for their particular trauma
@kelseyroy8280

yes 1000% and it’s so sad. in a perfect world every child would have a detailed file, that shares their important background info, and things as simple as likes and interests. the foster system has a unique effect of dehumanizing children, almost sanitizing.

From my short amount of time working with forster care as a new foster mom it does seem like the system doesn't care. In reality they are picking these kids up and the parents won't allow the workers to learn more about the kid until that moment they are being placed. They don't have more information until after the kid has been placed and they try to move kids as little as possible. They will know only small amounts of their tramas but kids will be open up to the foster parents while in their care as they start to trust. That's why it's hard to know if their is physical abuse or sexual abuse or if it is just neglect. Neglect is visible but abusers try to hide the abuse and kids are conditioned to not speak up.

@Kenzy Huggard social services/children and youth services are so overtaxed and underfunded, and policies that we have just don't work efficiently. It's a mess. My aunt was a social worker and couldn't do it. She felt terrible because she had to watch as kids slipped thru the cracks and be reunited with parents or guardians that they should've not been reunited with. It's tragic.

Yep. There is no one to blame except the abuser though. If the social worker goes out and there is a terrible situation, this what happens next.

As a former indigenous child, this woman deserves gold metal. This lady is kind, respectful, and so healing. This may sound strange, but I am healing through her videos. Not only is she teaching how to be a 21st foster parent, she is teaching us foster children ( I am very old now) how to be respected. This woman is fire, water, earth, and air. I have thought hard about her videos, and every time I cry ugly cry. This young lady is wise beyond her years, her heart is kindness, and learned how to be an authentic human living in chaos. However, she gives it all she has, loves unconditionally, and understand that immense pain (in a little person, or teen) is standing in front of her. Young lady, you are healing an old soul. Thank you, you do important work and you are talented. I promise you, as a over 50 year old, I remember the kindness and they impacted me. Their kindness made me the person I have become, I have two degrees. As a former foster child, I crave a forever home with a forever job. A real family, that loves each other, understands each other, and helps each other. Without judging, or ridicule, or having to justify something you do not understand. Why? It is an adult problem and children have no experience in understanding. This young lady understanding is impressive, beautiful, and makes me believe in humanity. Thank you

I just wanted to say, I absolutely adore your shorts and you. You show a side of fostering that most don't get to see. Fortunately/Unfortunately my children were in foster care for 4 years and we got so lucky to have an amazing foster family. And you show the same warmth, love, understanding, and communication that our family was treated with. With proof of fosters out there like this it makes it easier on the heart. I appreciate you. "4 year old removed for general neglect" hits me in the gut like a freight train... I was removed for severe neglect (as well as other things that my father was never tried for) and I was 11. Thinking of ANY neglect that gets a 4-year-old removed just makes me feel so helpless for them.

I have such complete respect for GOOD foster parents, and having worked many years in healthcare, I know that good, loving temporary homes are so hard for social services to find. I love how you are giving advice to perspective foster parents. I could never bear to have the children taken away, and I don't know how you do it. So often, birth parents are given chance after chance, which I know reunification is the goal, as it should be. Often, in the hospital I have seen those children after reunification with parents that weren't ready yet, or reunification time after time for the child to be harmed time after time. I cannot imagine how you deal with the anxiety of this child that you have loved, kept safe and protected returning to a parent that might not be ready. You have my respect and admiration for what you do!!!

It's really sad and so traumatizing for the little ones and even teenagers to have to wait such a long time to find a placement when they're just missing their own home and to come to someone's house who has such a big kind and caring heart like you, you're definitely one of the few and I wish there were more people out there like you who were fostering. Unfortunately, a lot of foster homes and a lot of Foster parents, just don't care about the details about the little things that make the children more comfortable and the families more comfortable. I have heard of kids being taken away for General neglect and put into a foster care home that could be an hour away from their home out of the city they lived in they could have mental health issues they could have mental health defects and I have seen those children such with autism, regress on potty training and if they were doing good at home all of a sudden they're back into diapers for a few more months. It's a traumatizing traumatizing situation. Thank you for bringing that to the Forefront of people's eyes. And just because somebody got their child taken temporarily by cps, does not automatically make them a horrible parent. Thank you for doing what you do.

I obviously can't speak for any Foster parent specifically, However, to imply that people don't care just because they have a different approach or they don't have as much means to be able to provide as much is not really fair. Cultural differences alone can cause a significantly different approach but that doesn't necessarily mean it's a bad thing for the children that they will be taking in. Then there's entry process is to becoming a Foster parent to consider, which some States requires an extremely high income compared to the average person which causes this lack of available homes in every community. Plus sometimes it's not in the best interest of the mental health of the child to stay in the immediate community if people who would support the parent in their bad choices (be it denial of how bad things were, providing things like drugs or weapons to the parent, or even blaming the child for causing the circumstances) are going to be talking to the child by way of being in the neighborhood. Obviously, that's not every situation or community, but it does happen and the impact that it has on a child's capacity to heal can be significant. I personally would have loved to have started fostering a year ago, however, the entry into fostering in my state would require doubling my income and even the masters degree that I'm working on would not provide that. This is why there are so many children in our community that end up being bused to other counties for Foster care homes because there's so few here with enough money per state guidelines to be eligible in spite of the fact that there are plenty of families that have the capacity and are just barely below the income barrier. Reasons for removal here are pretty consistent, and fosters get burnt out dealing with seeing the same kids brought back or with another foster because the parent(s) didn't really have their life in order to get custody returned to them. My state has moved to preferring family fostering and getting special exemption licensing, but that isn't always the best choice for the kids. There's no "good" fostering situation really because the need spells out that the children have endured life altering trauma. But the regulations need to be updated, more social workers hired, more community support programs developed, and guidelines improved to increase the number of available fosters. But that takes state legislatures to address problems and for governors to not brush aside all of the above when encouraging legislature to make improvements.

Feels like you were implying that being autistic is a “mental health defect”. It’s not. I understand your general sentiment but please leave being autistic out of it. I am autistic and I am here to tell you that it is just a different neurotype. Albert Einstein was autistic, Dan Akroid, and many actors and comedians and scientists and people that shape our world are autistic. There is nothing wrong with us. I understand that there is a lot of misinformation and that’s not your fault. My own mom was very misinformed once too. I understand your sentiment here was with good intentions and I appreciate you advocating for kids. I just want to offer this information in hopes of you not continuing to spread misinformation about the autistic neurotype. There are some kids that happen to be autistic that have developmental delays, there are also neurotypical kids with developmental delays. Autistic kids can have delays as well as be very ahead of other kids in other ways. For example I didn’t start walking until I was 2 years old, but I started talking in complete sentences and having conversations at 11 months. There are speech impairment disorders, such as apraxia. This many autistic kids happen to have apraxia, and on top of stimming for emotional regulation, many people wrongfully assume those kids are less competent, which they are not, or that all autistic people struggle with speech. Neither are true. I suggest talking with and listening to other autistic adults to learn more. People like me that actually have the neurotype and lived experience and can provide facts, not misinformation. When you’re talking about kids with severe traumas that have been through neglect and put into foster care, they are all going to experience some sort of delays, regression, etc due to the trauma and neglect. Whether or not they have an autistic neurotype has nothing to do with it. I hope you won’t misinterpret my tone here. I just want to educate and again I totally understand that there is so much misinformation and that’s not your fault. I hope you have a nice day and that my comment finds you well

@@KatieCottingham o can see them wanting a family with enough rooms and space and a big enough vehicle. So that has to do with income. But the state is supposed to provide financially unless it’s because their plan is always adoption incase the parents can’t have their children back.

This is really amazing. I had issues with people touching my hair when I was a kid because of SA and people grabbing and pulling my hair during it, and I still kind of get uncomfortable if it’s not someone I know well and trust, but back then I’d full on panic if someone touched my hair. And I had a period of time where I didn’t really take care of myself much and my hair got kind of matted, and my mom decided she’d try and brush it, but I got scared so she just cut out chunks and then told people I’d gotten a hold of the scissors and did it myself. Then I had head lice and got the option of sit still and let her mess with my hair, or have it all shaved off, and the end result was her tying me to a chair to do the lice treatment and combing. And I swear I wasn’t trying to be difficult, I was really trying my best, but I’d have where it felt like I was back in that moment and I couldn’t really do much to help it. It would’ve been really nice to have at least had someone be patient with me though instead of just getting angry, but my mom was also kind of just angry that she got a screwed up kid.

"General Neglect" means anything they want it to.... usually a messy room in the home, or the parents may have an addiction issues which means they may not ever have even been neglected at all.

Gross that they call it a detainment when it comes to children as if they're the reason they're being placed with someone else.

I remember I had a fear of heights and I didn't like bunk beds so I usually had bottom bunk or a bed in the scary room, there was this one room in the foster home the foster mom Tracy called the punishment room it was really dark in there there was a closet and a bed but nothing else and I widow that over looked a pool in the back yard with a dead tree I was so scared during a storm I run out of the room and hide in the bathroom all night since the house had several bathrooms

that would come with experience -- that is why the new foster parent did not ask that -- unfortunately, with neglected children , that would not be uncommon :-( (or those with certain disabilities)

Do they ever have any information when calling you for a placement it seems they never do as they always say nah I'm sorry I don't if they removed the child through neglect then there just be a report in front of them if they need to look for a placement or is that not the case,?, I love your shorts videos 🥰🥰🥰
@amandamelvin89
@amandamelvin89 Жыл бұрын
Sometimes it's during a holiday or after hours or later during the week during the work day, they don't have that information in front of them they're just trying to help the team find a place for the child as soon as possible. Children can wait for hours to find placements. They are working as fast as they can to get the child into a safe home environment so that they can stop being traumatized by the process of CPS taking them away. Sometimes some of the details are kind of personal to the parents and they might not always share them with you. Especially in cases where they found parents neglectful but for reasons where they grabbed onto straws.

I have a question, any advice on fostering a kid of a different culture or race from yourself and how to be sensitive to that? Just as one example, if a kid from one religion is placed in a home with a different belief system, like Catholic with Protestant or nonreligious with religious etc.

Do they really refer to children as "detainments"? I know it's a small thing, but just seems slightly derogatory and unfeeling. Usually when people refer to someone being detained it's because of something they did wrong.
