Stryper are a Christian rock band that sings about praising God, and themes from the Bible. They have been performing, and stayed true to their faith for 40 years now

Except for that brief(?) period in the 90s when they came out and said they weren't christian anymore. then they realized that being a big fish in a little pond is better than being a little fish in the ocean. Then "they came back to the fold" and have stayed true to their built-in fanbase and album sales instead.

@@mishmashmedleyI don’t think they ever said they weren’t a Christian band, they tried to show they were more than just the yellow and black band that preached in their music. The letters in the word Stryper, according to lead singer Michael Sweet, stood for Salvation Through Redemption Yielding Peace Encouragement and Righteousness. The name is taken from the Bible in the book of Isaiah chapter 53 verses 4 and 5: He (Jesus) was wounded for our transgressions, bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him, and by his "stripes" we are healed. Though there were several Christian rock bands and even a few metal bands prior to Stryper coming on the scene, they were probably the most successful and even had their songs played on secular radio stations. One of their hits "Calling on You" made the top requested video on MTV back in the day. Because of their unique style (visually and musically) Stryper was able to reach audiences that weren't of the Christian faith and they were able to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ to people all around the world reaching many souls. Stryper is still making great music and rocking. :)

Stryper came up w/ the 80's 'hair metal' scene in California... but unlike their peers, they were devoted Christians and the 'clean cut' guys of heavy metal... They dressed in matching yellow & black to signify their faith and would pass out Bibles at the end of their set. The band was: Michael Sweet (vocals & guitar), Robert Sweet (drums), Oz Fox (guitar) and Tim Gaines (bass/ keyboards)... Stryper was gifted on their instruments and they were signed in 1984 and released an EP 'The yellow & black attack'... which sold 150K copies w/ little promotion... their first full album 'Soldiers under command' (1985) was the first Christian metal record to sell gold (half million copies) in the US... 'To hell with the devil' (1986) became Stryper's biggest record and sold platinum (1 million copies) w/ the hit ballad 'Honestly'... Ironically, Stryper was attacked by Christian groups for the album cover having the pentagram on the artwork, and it had to be censored. 'In God we trust' (1988) became a hit in Japan and sold gold in the US again, but Stryper saw the trends going against their brand of metal and went for a heavier record w/ 'Against the law' (1990)... but it sold poorly. Stryper split in 1992 after Michael Sweet departed for a solo career... the 90's were not welcoming for 80's artists. In 2005, Stryper reunited and released 'Reborn'... followed by 'Murder by pride' (2009) which charted decently at #73 in the US without any promotion... Their 15th album 'No more hell to pay' (2013) charted at #35... 'Fallen' (2015) charted at #44. In 2017, longtime bassist Tim Gaines was apparently fired from Stryper... Perry Richardson (bass) replaced him, and Stryper has continued to record and tour til today.

I could really write a lengthy and persuasive essay to share the impact you guys have had on countless numbers of us. I described Stryper to my Mom with such enthusiasm that one day she called me in Texas from my home state of Michigan to say, “Well, Christopher…I just wanted to tell you what I did last night.” (Uh-oh…is this her one phone call from “County”?) “I saw Stryper.” Whhhhat??? She took it upon herself to go buy a ticket and wade into the crowd. She loved y’all. I’ve never been so proud of my Mom. You guys are a part of the story of my life. This is the title track of Stryper's second, and most famous studio album, released in 1986. They have released fourteen so far, and unusually enough for a veteran act, their more reecent outings are, overall, better and more exciting than the earlier stuff. One thing about the "To hell with the Devil" album though - poor Stryper have always had to struggle hard against their more fanatical "fellow" Christians, and the "THWTD" album cover debacle is a prime example. The original cover depicts four angels, presumably representing the four band members, about to throw the Devil into a volcanic pit. No sane, reasonably intelligent person could misunderstand that. But US Christian fanatics did. They claimed that the mere presence of Satan on the record cover proved Stryper to be Satan WORSHIPERS, causing such a stir that subsequent re-releases of the album have just featured an all black (!) artwork with band- and title logo. Rabid Christians have always hated Stryper, because they hate heavy metal and will never agree that metal and Christianity could mix. When Stryper's next album was released in 1988, it was called "In God we trust" and the artwork featured a dollar bill. Clever, right? No! Not according to those fanatics, who claimed this to be proof of Stryper being greedy money worshipers. You just can't win with human slime like that. I for one do not believe a God even exists in any way, shape or form, but this has not impeded my appreciation for Stryper's music in the slightest. As long as the results are good, I don't care about the lyrical content - within reason, of course. My native Sweden has also produced some of the most successful Christian metal (often referred to as White Metal) acts there are, like the semi-legendary Jerusalem and Leviticus - not to mention Narnia, who are arguably the most brightly shining Christian stars on the metal skies today. Extremely talented, and highly recommended. Returning to Stryper, they have proved an impressively stable unit over the years, with the exception of a multitude of changes in the bassist position. Their current bassist is actually the first non-religious member in the band's history: Perry Richardson, previously best known from the excellent early 90s hair metal band Firehouse. Oh, lest we forget - Stryper singer, guitarist and alpowerful (!) songwriter Michael Sweet also fronted the legendary Boston between 2007 and 2011, following the tragic suicide of original vocalist Brad Delp.

Stryper has been one of my favorites since their beginning. I love the fact that they are a Christian band who went to the pit (Main stream) and stayed with there Christian values and message.
