Just pronounce it A-Ha, however it comes out it's right, because everybody pronounced it their own way back then. I was in college when this came out, and I remember how cool and innovative this video was back in the day. The song was first released in their home country of Norway in 1984, then was re-released with this new video in the USA about a year later and became a massive world-wide hit. A couple of years later, these guys ended up recording the next James Bond movie theme at the time, The Living Daylights, another good song. After their initial big success here, they kinda faded from the scene in America, but remained a big success in Europe until into the 21st century.

Was this new wave? I associate that with groups like The Police and Blondie or even Sparks (despite being an older band). I believe people called this lots of names, at least here in Sweden. Fjortispop ("fourteens-pop"), tjejpop ("girls-pop"), or just pop, or synth-pop.

@@herrbonk3635 This is synth-pop. They kept using synths for most (though not all) of their career, certainly their guitarist/ principal songwriter plays a MEAN guitar,, but their music quickly matured to the point where "pop" just generally didn't cover all the types of music they produced. I think that's where the New Wave label came from, but they've done some songs I think are straight up rock, too. They're kind of hard to peg.

"Take on me" by Norwegian a-ha (pronounced just as your regular "a-ha!" in surprise or revelation) was released in 1985 on the third attempt to release it. It was released in a genius planning campaign by Warner Bros, first they wallpapered the entire inner city of New York and also London with giant posters of the boys, published the video and waited for the audience to discover the now classic and groundbreaking video by Steve Barron which it did quite quickly and then, after a month of publishing the video, released the single - it almost went directly to Billboard no 1. It reached 1 billion views here on YT recently! I have seen them live several times, lead singer Morten Harket still has his voice intact, well mostly anyway!

This song and the video came out in 1985. Yes, 1985! The video “wowed” us back then and has stood the test of time. It is still an amazing video even by today’s standards! The tune is catchy and excerpts from the video have been used by MTV and VH1 in their commercials. I am so glad you got the chance to experience it. I wish I could hear it / see it again for the first time....

This video is actually a two part video. The second part is the music video "the sun always shines on tv"

It was a big hit in '85 Jayvee, great reaction! Another big hit of theirs was 'The Sun Always Shines On TV' - it was massive in the clubs.

This first album definitely had some catchy pop tunes on it, this song was a big hit. I really liked the second album "Scoundrel Days", it was more of a new wave / alternative album with more instruments added.

Now you know how I felt when I was 8 and this song broke. And how me and countless others felt when hundreds of great songs came out in the awesome 80’s. Seriously miss those years, it was a lot of fun and we didn’t have cell phones and the internet stealing our childhoods.

'The sun always shines on TV' was the follow up to 'Take on me' ( their 1st single) and got to no 1 in the UK charts. I loved 'Hunting high and low '. Loads of great songs.

One of the most underrated 80s bands. "Take On Me" was their first major international hit, but in my opinion "The Sun Always Shines on TV" was their greatest song with an amazing video still holds up today. You need to check it out, you won't be disappointed! A-Ha - The Sun Always Shines on TV

Someone probably already mentioned this but the end of the music video, when he is in the hallway trying to break out, is based on the movie Altered States (1980) with William Hurt, trippy movie

The video makes more sense when you know he's saying "I'll be gone in a day or two". So, he's a comic book hero with a crush on the pretty girl reading the magazine. She likes him, too. He comes to life, but only for a day or two, and tries to romance her. I think she's interested. They meet again in another Ah Ha video. Love the synth. Great song.

Great that you were taken completely away by the song! It IS a genius song. Immerse in the song a few more times and when you're ready, the video is a work of art with a romantic story...and just as incredible as the song.

I grew up in the 80s, listening to all their greatest hits. They matured into a more rock band, showing their influences by bands like The Doors or Uriah Heep. Between A-ha and Depeche Mode, you gotta love em 80s
