The movie "Fire and Ice," (1983), by the late, great artist Frank Frazetta, also used rotoscoping. I guess the difference with "Take On Me," is that it transitions from animation to reality continually through the video.

You shouldn't. They like what they like. Just as you like what you like. I know because I come from a generation very likely before even yours. And 20 years from now, everyone will say that everything from 2020 was the best music and everything today was crap. And guess what? 20 years after that, those people from the future will be doing exactly the same thing. Nostalgia is always greener on the past side of the fence, but this is only bias, nothing rooted in any fact.

It is a whole package. Without the huge hit potential the record company would never have put all the effort (money) into making the video. I guess it is hard for younger generations to understand how strange this new sound was back then. That's what A-ha themselves ment about the claim that the song needed time to grow on you. It still is that way with A-ha's music - many of their songs needs you to listen more than once. Like this first song which needed to grow on the whole world - today their songs have to grow on each and one of us and eventually ends up becoming the music we love the most.

I always found it curious how people in North America or Europe recognize A-ha only due to "Take on Me" and maybe "The Sun Always Shines on TV" ... while here in Brazil they were/are massively popular, they had TONS of hits here, you can even check for yourself their other videos on youtube, like "Stay on These Roads", "Touchy", "Manhattan Skyline", "You Are The One", "Hunting High and Low" ... more than 50% of the comments there are in portuguese. The animation effect was called Rotoscope which was invented/developed by Colossal Pictures/USFX in San Francisco. We did a ton of stuff for MTV as well as FX for movies like “The Right Stuff”, “Top Gun” and “The Running Man”. Also back then we did a multi-episode show called “Aeon Flux” done in an animae art style for MTV’s Liquid Television. All of MTV’s original “bumpers” (when they first went on the air) were done by us. Seeing your reaction had me grinning from ear to ear. Excellent vid!

Memories.... A-Ha was a really famous pop band in the eighties, lot of people remember them as "just a pop band" but actually it was really a great band, great musicians. This was the first song and when it was out in the eighties, for everyone it was more than an awesome video (remember, the special FX and 3D was just at the beginning and only for big big big movies), here, everything is draws like old cartoon were made. And the song still good!

This video in 1985 was considered groundbreaking and it pushed the boundaries of the possibilities that can be achieved when viewing music videos as a legitimate artform. It won numerous awards and at the time it was the most expensive video ever made. It brought the art technique of "Rotoscoping" to the forefront of mainstream and today, it is considered by many as the greatest music video ever created in terms of production and popularity. 35 years later and people are STILL talking about this video.

I was alive when this first came out. There is some amazing fact about this music video. What's amazing is that this was shot on film, then frame by frame it was projected on the wall inside of a large building. An artist later drew out each scene onto paper. TIME TAKING! Wikipedia it!

As you like doing the research and stuff, fun fact about Morten Harket (The singer). He used to be in this all boys choir called the Silver Boys ("Sølvguttene") and one of the main times they perform is every year on Christmas Eve. In Norway we celebrate Christmas on the 24th and they'd be on TV during the time you'd eat your big Christmas meal. He was in the choir for some time which allowed him to keep his high notes even as an adult and the reason why he can sing like this still today. 😄
