Angelina was 9 years old in this performance - Her nationality is Norwegian but is fluent in English even at this age - This song was not arranged for her - she wrote the vocal arrangement based on listening to the original Screamin' Jay Hawkins version and communicated to the band how she wanted it to be played - in fact, at the beginning of the video you see Angelina writing down some last-minute changes and it is read by the bandleader. You also notice that her own handwritten notes are on the music stand in front of her as she sings. For more insight into how Angelina works, here is a rehearsal video with some of the same band members at the same age (9 yrs old) - You will see that she is aware of what each musician is doing and communicates to them what she wants to do. I can make this easy for you. Angelina, 9 years old here, is the best singer you’ve ever heard. I’ve listened to music all my life, and I realized she was the best when she was 12 covering Adele’s A Million Years Ago. (Yes, it was a completely different voice than what you’ve already heard.) She not only has an unbelievable voice, but she can choose whatever voice she wants to fit perfectly with the genre she’s singing. And in each video you’ve seen, she did the arrangement herself. The name is Angelina Jordan and she was 9 years old! 9 years old !!! Btw, in the beginning of the video you saw her hand the director a piece of paper. It had changes on it she wanted the band to make. Another words, the arrangement was hers. You saw her singing barefoot. She met a child about her age when she was 6 years old and the girl's parents had died and she was working on the street with a scale so people could come by and weigh themselves and drop her a few coins. Her feet were bloody and scarred and Angelina took off her shoes and gave them to the girl. It's a long story and Angelina wrote a book about it at 9 years old. (What!?) Later that day, after saying good-bye to the poor young girl Angelina told her grandma from that point on whenever she would sing in public she will do it barefoot because she never wants to forget that girl and the sorry state some children must be in, in the world. She's now 17 and still performs barefoot. When she was about 10 years old (about 4 years after the incident) she was being interviewed on tv and the woman handling the interview asked Angelina if she still thought about that little girl. Angelina replied, "I think of her everyday." Mr. MMBxMOB (huh?), stop analyzing her and listen to her and appreciate who she is. Nobody like her and I don't think there was ever anybody like her. She doesn't imitate, she interprets. She was born to be what she is, a musical prodigy. If she played an instrument, like the piano, and was playing complex concertos, or works by Mozart, Beethoven, Bach or DeBussy we might believe that more readily. A girl with a voice and ability of a full-grown adult is a little harder to believe. My first contact with Angelina was her singing an acapella version of Billie Holiday's 'I'm A Fool To Want You'. I don't know if you know or have seen that performance but I was stunned to tears at her singing this song. Many have said she is just mimicking, I say of course she is, but even given that her ability to stay in tune and maintaining the pace of the song is still an amazing thing. But it was her tone and timbre that belied her age. If you go back to when she was six you hear her commitment to her singing. She has progressed the way a young lady would given a drive to be excellent to be the thing she has dreamed of a superstar. There is nothing this young lady does that surprises me anymore, but I am constantly amazed. Oh, Angelina is 17. Her birthday is January 10th, so in 2024 she will be 18.

Angelina was 12 in the previous I’d Rather Go Blind video. This song was recorded in about March 2015 when she was 9 years 2 months old however it wasn’t released until September 2016. This is her own arrangement based on the original 1956 Screamin Jay Hawkins version. Thank you for featuring Angelina again. I hope you will do many more reactions to her, as she is well worth every nanosecond you spend on her. I have watched and listened to her in awe since she released her first video on KZbin, and what has been evident to me from the start is that she sings with total conviction, despite the fact that she is far too young to have experienced the events suggested in the lyrics of the song she has chosen to sing. But it is not only that, for strange as it may seem is the even more remarkable fact that she can convey the appropriate emotions within those lyrics to her listener. This is Angelina's tribute to Screamin' Jay Hawkins, who wrote and performed the song in 1956 (50 years before Angelina was born). She based her arrangement on his original performance, although she discarded all the theatrics and allowed her voice and body language to tell the story. The song has been covered by many singers over the years, but to my knowledge, Angelina is the only one who has sung in the same style as the original. There are many things I found particularly worthy of note in this video. Some I recognised immediately and those I missed were brought to my attention by the more observant Angelina fans (her Angels) and I thank them for letting me know what I had missed. Another Angelina "Angel" has pointed out something else which I had missed, and it is added at (l) below, (a) Angelina finishing writing last minute changes she wanted and handing them to the Music Director, who smiled. (b) A brief glimpse of Mery Zamani, Angelina's maternal grandmother, a well known and respected Iranian Artist and poet who was also a child prodigy. She was the person who recognised Angelina's talent at an early age and exposed her to all the old time jazz singers. (c) The candle with an image of Screamin' Jay Hawkins on it. (d) The smile on the face of the Bass player. (e) How she rose on to her toes on the last occasion she sang "...because you're mine" (f) The fact she occasionally refers to her written notes on the music stand. Possibly to remind herself of the last minute changes she wanted. (g) Her unwavering passion throughout the performance. Evidenced by her facial expressions and the way she uses her hands and body to emphasise the direction of the song. (h) The way she takes a breath just before she starts the last phrase (I don't care.....) and that breath lasts the whole of that sustained note. A child of that age should not have the ability to hold a note for that length of time. (i) At the end, when she sings I Doooont Caaaaare, she employs TWO separate and distinct vibratos to the word care, a wide one to start the word and a tighter one to close the word (j) The instant transformation from "performance" mode to that of a pensive child, possibly wondering whether she could have done better. I comment on the "pensive" child because Angelina has an incredible work ethic and seeks to perform every song in a way she considers will bring out all the emotions within the lyrics and melody. (k) Perhaps the most remarkable is that despite her tender years, she sings with such total conviction that her authenticity is never in doubt. It is easy to believe that she has experienced the events described in the lyrics. It is not only her voice that is mesmerising, it is also her facial expressions, and the way she uses her hands and body. Her stage presence is electrifying. (l) The performance absolutely is powerful and raw but to me, I am amazed that this is balanced by the profound beauty of the ending phrase; the last twelve words of the song. AND… they are essentially sung a cappella! Angelina has been referred to as the "Queen of Jazz", "The Barefoot Princess", "The girl with a thousand voices". All of them are true, but I prefer the nickname I gave her after listening to about six of her performances. For me, she is "The Chameleon of Song", for as a chameleon is able to change its colour to match its surroundings, so Angelina is able to change the "colour" of her voice to accurately match the needs of the song to reveal the emotions within the lyrics and melody. Even more remarkable is her innate ability to communicate those same emotions to her listeners.

I first saw AJ in this video back in Dec Just scrolling and came across this black & white video seeing this little girl with the headline I put a spell on you. I thought to myself.. what? I'm 70 and I remember my 2 older sisters trying after a couple of beers, horsing around singing this song. They both loved Jay Hawkins and loved this song. Its was comical for me to watch them. And that its the only reason why I listened. I almost didn't thinking why put out this video to embarrass yourself? My God was I so wrong. I was floored! And thus started my deep dive into AJ's singing. She has over 145 vidoes out, her family was how would you say... camera happy? "Feeling Good" live on _The Stream Gir Tilbake_ at 10 years old, on her Official channel (same channel where you found this one). Performed almost two years after this one (about to turn 11 vs. no more than a few months after turning 9 for this video), it's unbelievable how much her voice had matured in that time. As surprising as this one is, if you played the audio for someone who didn't know her at all and couldn't see her, they could still probably tell that it was a child - just maybe not quite as young a child as she was. The "Feeling Good" performance… I don't think anyone would guess younger than, say 17 on that one. Oh, and as for the performance itself: again, she turns in The Definitive Rendition of a classic. A barefoot princess with a hypnotic voice. She was only 9 years old when she performed this song. It is her tribute to Screamin' Jay Hawkins, an American singer/songwriter. He wrote and performed it in 1956 and Angelina based her performance on the original, although she did make some subtle alterations to both lyrics and melody. As you continue your journey of discovering Angelina, you will come to realise that she does her own arrangements of most of the cover songs she sings. The differences may not be immediately discernible on first listening to them, but they are there. There may be a subtle change in tempo or tone, or more inflexion on some words, or a phrase may differ in pitch from the original. The amount of control that Angelina has over her voice cannot be measured. She never hurries a song. She sings in such a way that the emotions in the lyrics are felt by the listener. Angelina was born in 2006, conveniently right at the start of that year, so it should be easy to work out her age at any given point and therefore the maximum age she could have been when a video was uploaded. She is 17 now and could only have been 10 at most when this video was uploaded. My understanding is that it was uploaded several months after it was recorded and that she was a little over 9 years old. Bohemian Rhapsody on AGT was broadcast less than a week before her 14th birthday in 2020 but was recorded in October of the previous year. So she was 14 when her Final performance was aired but actually still 13 when it was recorded, again in October 2019.

She has a cover channel on utube with all the covers she’s done🤯 She was 9 in this performance. She does all of her own arranging. This was arranged after the original Screaming J Hawkins. Born Angelina Jordan Astar on January 10, 2006 in Oslo, Norway to her Norwegian mother, Sara Astar and her Swedish father, Gerry Christian Slattman. Angelina started singing around 18 months of age, after listening to Whitney Houston on KZbin. She quickly became obsessed with listening to music videos and her maternal grandmother, Mery Zamani got Angelina interested in classic jazz. Mery Zamani is Iranian and was a prodigy as an artist and poet while growing up in Iran. Angelina attended the Oslo Waldorf School and participated in the Oslo School of Music and Performing Arts after-school program, where starting around age 4, she had training in music but no vocal training. Her teachers were smart enough to not attempt to change what she was doing vocally. More recently she along with her grandmother have designed and made the clothing she wears on stage. Why Angelina always performs barefoot At age 6, while traveling in the Middle East with her mother and grandmother, Angelina noticed a girl around her age standing on the side of the road, asking people to step on her bathroom scale to be weighed in hopes of getting some money. Angelina took off her shoes so as to not get the scale dirty and stepped on the scale many times to make the girl feel better. Angelina befriends the girl who was not wearing shoes and has scars on her feet, and learns she is an orphan. The orphan girl tells Angelina how beautiful she thinks her shoes are. Angelina says her shoes don’t fit her well and she wants to give her shoes to the orphan girl who thanks Angelina for giving her the shoes. Angelina asked the girl what she wanted to be when she grew up and the girl replied, “I want to become a doctor, but that will never happen since I have no parents and I have siblings so I have to do whatever is necessary for us to survive.” Angelina told the girl to never give up on her dreams. The poor girl asked Angelina what she wanted to be when she grew up and Angelina replied that she wanted to sing for the whole world. Yeah, music history was made here, not the first time for Angelina, nor the last!! It is truly a conundrum when we try to rationalize how it is possible that this tiny sweet-faced 9yo Norwegian girl can step up to a microphone, flip some switch within her, become this "beast-mode" version of herself (most probably named "AJ don't play"), deliver an extraordinary and musically and socially sophisticated performance, then just-like-that return to the pensive young lady once again... There aren't words for this! "I Put a Spell On You" has been covered many times and is recognized as a classic, yet almost never is the tone of the original 1956 "Screamin" Jay Hawkins version captured. This is because Hawkins was the original shock rock guy (think Ozzy Osbourne-type craziness) and his style is difficult to emulate and also because his dated delivery is uncomfortable and stereotypical to our modern sensibilities. Yet Angelina respectfully sings his own song in a manner that exceeds his (Hawkin's image is on the candle she holds at the start of her video). You must go and listen to Hawkins' original to see the true genius in how AJ incorporates many of his vocal elements [usually omitted by most singers]. This shows another aspect of her musical IQ and arranging genius (not to mention her masterful control of her vocal instrument equaled by few others regardless of age).
