*You guys really should watch the video for this so you can see who's doing what. Chuck D from Public Enemy was rapping but so was Scott Ian from Anthrax. Anthrax was very inclusive and embraced a lot of rap back in a time when music fans were very "clicky". Anthrax made it okay for metal heads to say they liked rap and hip hop.*

This is technically a previously released Public Enemy song, which sounded '80s hardcore rap. Anthrax is a thrash metal band, but a couple of the members of that band were always very big into rap and hip hop. They and Public Enemy were familiar with each other, and decided to actually tour together to see if a rap band and a metal band could do so. It turned out to be successful, and they used to collab on this song for one of the closers at night. They decided to make an actual recording of it.

I saw that same tour at Richfield Colloseum in Cleveland, Slayer was the final act at that particular show 1991. They rotated the closing act, with AIC the opener for all venues. Made sense for Anthrax to be the closer in NYC since that's their hometown. Great show.

This was the OG meeting of the minds between one of the world's greatest hip hop groups and one of the world's greatest metal groups. Literally every rock/rap hybrid you've ever heard in your life, including the entire nu-metal era, goes directly back to this collaboration, and a little further back to Aerosmith and Run DMC getting together on "Walk This Way." Before those two tracks, there was rock, and there was rap, and never the twain shall meet. Except never say never. LOL

PE shouted out Anthrax in the lyrics to the original off their album It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back. Scott Ian of Anthrax worked out a riff for the song and got up with Chuck D and they remixed this song to this form and dropped it for Attack of the Killer Bs album. Agree with others that this collaboration pretty much birthed Nu Metal though and you can see its influence in a lot of artists. I would recommend doing PE's original just for comparisons sake. If you are feeling this then you need to hit up Onyx and Biohazard with Biohazard's cover of Slam (or was it a duet?... either way its epic) and then, I am telling you, check out the tracks off the Judgement Night soundtrack. Some of the best rap and metal/alternative/rock artist collaborations ever.

Anthrax was New York City's premier metal band and Public Enemy were the hip hop kings of New York back in the 80's. They collaborated on this track (which was written by Public Enemy) and then they went on tour together. I saw the tour when it came to Seattle (1991? mixed black and white audience) but I can't remember which act closed the show. I know Primus was the opening act and I know I met Flavor Flav on an escalator at the Westlake Mall and got him to autograph my Anthrax t-shirt. Good times.
@DaveyJake
@DaveyJake 8 ай бұрын
How this came to be started with Scott Ian (Anthrax's rhythm guitarist) being HUGE Public Enemy fan, so much so he always wore a Public Enemy T-shirt on stage while playing. Chuck D saw that and included the lyric, "Wax is for Anthrax" in the song Bring The Noise. Scott Ian heard this and was quickly able to structure an Anthrax-sounding guitar riff for Bring The Noise. He mailed the cassette tape to Chuck D and the rest is history. Anthrax is considered to be 1 of the "Big 4" of Thrash Metal--the other 3 being Metallica, Slayer and Megadeth.

I was in high school in Connecticut in 88-90. It was a big school and the two groups that are up together and go along we’re the blacks and the headbangers. Both groups felt like the outsiders. So this collaboration at the time makes total sense. We were athletes or preps(rich). Good days

Anthrax and PL went out on tour with this. A lot of 'smart' people thought it would be a disaster, but it ended up being a wonderful fusion of two groups of music fans who found they had a hell of a lot on common. And that was sick beats, aggression and energy. It was truly groundbreaking.

From today's perspective... both Anthrax & Public Enemy were acts from 2 genres that introduced something completely new to the music scene when they each started out in NYC. Anthrax (w/ Metallica, Slayer & Megadeth) introduced America to thrash metal in 1984/ '85, while Public Enemy introduced America to politically charged rap music in 1987/ '88... Both changed the game separately. The 2 worlds of heavy metal and hip hop music were miles apart in every sense... but Aerosmith and Run DMC changed the game in 1986 when they collaborated on the rap version of 'Walk this way'. The members of Anthrax, coming from NYC, were fans of the East Coast rap scene in the 80's... Scott Ian (rhythm guitar) of Anthrax would wear Public Enemy t-shirts onstage... Chuck D of Public Enemy appreciated that gesture and shouted out Anthrax on their track 'Bring the noise'... In 1991, Anthrax wanted to remake 'Bring the noise' and Public Enemy was hesitant, but agreed to the collaboration... it blew the doors wide open when the metal version of 'Bring the noise' became a hit that year, and Anthrax & Public Enemy launched the first metal & hip hop tour that year... hoping to introduce metal fans to rap, and metal to rap fans... The 2 acts stayed friends to this day - Chuck D appeared on stage w/ Anthrax on tour in 2022 performing 'Bring the noise'. And this was before Rage Against the Machine debuted in 1992 and introduced a brand of rock fused w/ hip hop and politically charged lyrics on their 1st album and became the first band to make a career out of rap rock music. Anthrax is a very unique metal band; they have always experimented w/ various influences into their music and recorded songs that Metallica, Slayer and other thrash metal bands would never do... I'd recommend the Anthrax songs - 'I am the law'... 'Armed & dangerous'... 'Antisocial' (Trust cover)... 'In my world'... 'Only' ... 'Nothing'... 'Caught in a mosh'... 'Safe home'... 🤘🤘🔥🔥

As rap was evolving with more social issues content, PE took it to another level with straight up in your face social commentary on politics and race so mainstream radio was scared to death to give them air time until their song Fight the Power along with this song blew up and they couldnt be ignored anymore with their popularity. Anthrax is hard to explain. They're a thrash metal band, and some of their stuff can be a little silly, if not outright comedic. They can also speak out on serious issues (Keep It In the Family). They also did one of the first rap-metal songs, I'm the Man. Which is definitely on their sillier side, but it's a fun song.

"Bring the Noise" is, in part, about how the music industry has treated black artists from the start. A huge amount of "American" music started with or were influenced by black Americans, but for a long time it was appropriated by other communities without proper credit. "Bring The Noise" speaks to this.

J said that he was blown away by watching really intense hardcore punk and crossover thrash metal bands playing with intensity. He stated on Jimmy Fallon's show two years ago that those bands were "killin' it". That's where he met the guys in Anthrax.

These bands had a political message and they sang about political and social injustices in the world, fascism, racism, political extremism etc.was of the first Rap Metal fusions that predated a lot of other bands. I don’t know how much cred this had in the streets, but me and all my suburban white boy friends ate this UP. Political consciousness rap? Yes please, such a great expansion from where rap started, with boast rhymes and general silliness. And Flav gave it that lighthearted counterpoint, but D was all business. I love this way more than Walk This Way and IMO it’s a far bolder achievement in fusion.
