This is her most experimental album and even won her her first grammy. It has a lil something for everyone and thats why you dont like each track. This was her way of showing versatility because there were people saying that all she did was scream on her first three albums so she toned it down. Some songs are showers and some are growers. Its a good album though. If you wanna really hear vocals from her, you should listen to her first three albums or even "Thank u, next" which was released 6 months after this album.

The Sweetener album is really different from the albums you've already reacted to (Positions & Eternal Sunshine). This album is very experimental sonically, it features a mix of genres, such as pop, r&b... as well as exploring many important themes such as overcoming and vulnerability. The album cover is Ariana upside down, representing her life which was also upside down at the time the album was released.

ariana said in an interview during this era that she intentionally wanted this album to sound more like "her" in a sense of using her lower range and establishing a new, fresh sound for her. a lot of ppl don't like this album or its a grower because of these reasons. like how you mentioned at 20:00. She has already proved she can do powerhouse ballads which she did with the first 3 albums, and so she wanted to have fun with sweetener. I personally think this is one of her best albums because it was her first album where the content was more personal and it showed her versatility with Pharrell's production. ☁

i would definitely suggest you listen to her album dangerous woman next. it’s different to any of her other albums that you’ve listened to in the sense that it is more mainstream sounding but also showcases her vocals a lot more. pretty much every track on the record includes beltier vocals and it has a few slowier, vocally heavy songs i’m sure you’d enjoy !!

Sweetener is one of the most (if not the most) experimental projects of Ariana's career, which is why many people tend to not like it at first but it usually changes over time, it strikes me that you said you would like to hear a song where she exploits her potential, but this album came after albums like Dangerous Woman and My Everything where most of the songs are like "Hey, look, this is me and this is what I can do, I can go crazy with my voice" and in her later projects she shows that it's not all about high notes and crazy beltings, she's truly talented.

18:25 I disagree with you on that comment, Ariana has songs throughout her career that are really vulnerable, with "Ghostin" probably being the most vulnerable song she's ever made. It's beautiful, these songs, definitely. But, you can't expect and want just that from Ariana. Frank Ocean and Adele are incredible vocalists, but they are unique and make their music their own way. Ariana too, she will never just be vulnerable and a ballad singer, because she has different styles and tastes as an artist and person. If you like Ariana's more ballad and emotional songs, it's totally fair and understandable. But, you have to keep in mind that Ariana will never be just that. She will be totally experimental in some songs, vulnerable in others, there will be totally pop songs to play in the club, some are totally sexual, etc. Especially because Ariana has several facets and tastes that are reflected in her music. So there's no way to compare her to Adele, Frank Ocean or Beyoncé, because each of them has a unique work and a different intention as artists.

Ariana´s studio versions of songs are always bit tamed compare to the level of her vocal skills, but when she sings live she adds so many new vocals, note changes, adlibs... like this girl doesn´t go easy on herself, especially when she´s on tour she tends to make her songs much harder to sing than they already are. I recommend to check K Bye For Now it´s a live album of songs she performed at her Sweetener Tour. If you think she goes wild in God Is A Woman in studio version than you will lose your mind when you hear the live tour version.

I think she was a bit tired after the grief caused by the Manchester terrorist attack that happened on her concert, so she was like "I'mma save energy". She even thought of quitting singing but then this album came out. So considering she was so exhausted this album is a lot.

this album takes a little more time to digest than other projects from her, but once you get it, it's really really good. i recommend searching live performances or listening to the live album versions. specially breathin that song live is just crazy. however if you really want to hear her belting her ass in the studio in the 2 previous albums (dangerous woman and my everything) she really was singing like her life depended on it.

Also its honestly better for the singer if they don't make every song just belting and singing their heart out because then while they are singing live they are going to have expectations of them to sing exactly like the studio version every time which is very damaging to a singers voice depending on how hard the vocals are. I mean just look at Mariah Carey for example, as a fan I can say that she always did too much in her songs that made it very hard for her to sing them live and it ruined her voice over time. So it's honestly healthier to take the Ariana route where you sing decently in the studio. And then go off live whenever you're comfortable.
