Babymetal Death is the song we show to people who say Babymetal isn't a metal band. This concert took place in 2013 after Su had recently graduated from Sakura Gakuin after turning 15 in Decemeber 2012, and Babymetal was becoming an independent act separate from SG as a result. This performance was symbolically representing the demise of her persona as Suzuka Nakamoto of Sakura Gakuin, and her transformation into the metal goddess, Sumetal of Babymetal. There is actually a pun in this song with the use of the word "death". When the girls say 'death', it sounds like 'dess', because the Japanese language has no dental fricatives (vocalization sounds that use your teeth) and so Japanese people find it quite difficult to make the "th" sound that we use in English. In Japanese, the word 'desu' (pronounced 'dess') mean 'I am, you are, we are, it is" (depending on context), so when they say "Babymetal death" they are also saying "Babymetal desu" (we are Babymetal), so in effect they are introducing themselves. Thus, when they say, "Babymetal death. Sumetal death. Yui-metal death. Moa-metal death.", they are saying, "We are Babymetal. I am Sumetal. I am Yui-metal. I am Moa-metal." Yes, that riff is a direct homage to Metallica, as is the big statue in the background, which is based on the statue of Justice from Metallica's 'And Justice for All' tour. The neckbrace is a homage to Yoshiki, drummer and pianist of X-Japan, who headbanged so much that he permanently damaged his neck and had to play in a neck brace. Babymetal have often cited Metallica and X-Japan as their biggest influences and in the early days, they liked to pay tribute to them in their performances, which is why they feature in this particularly significant performance.

@derbettnasser4027 Wow, that's pretty insulting. You think that because they're Japanese they can't understand what Christianity is or what its symbolism means? They can open any number of books and read everything they might need to know to grasp the fundamentals of Christianity. Just because Christianity isn't common in Japan doesn't mean they can't understand it. Not to mention that Koba is a walking encyclopedia of metal lore, and you can bet he knows the context of what he's doing. Everything in that Babymetal Death performance is there for a considered reason that Koba has planned out; it's all either intentional homages to legendary metal performers, or knowing winks to metal's tropes and stereotypes.

@derbettnasser4027 Do I think the girls knew when they did it originally when they were kids? Probably not. Do I think they know now? Yes. Do I think Koba knew exactly what he was doing all along? Yes.

They used to open with this song a few years back during their US tour, which was a smart idea for when they performed at the outdoor music festivals. Not only would it hype up the fans, but I bet it made people who never heard of BABYMETAL pay attention and check them out. Starting with one of their heaviest songs first showed metalheads how heavy they could get before blowing their brains out with their cuter songs.

This is the end of the show, the transformation to metal goddess. It makes a bit more sense if you see the opening sequence, Ave Maria / Headbanger (night of 15 mix), which is all lip-synced, backing track, no live band, typical idol style. It might also help to know about Japanese idol groups - what they are, how they operate - and how an alternative idol scene emerged, where BABYMETAL were one of the front runners.

Who doesn't enjoy a bit of theatrical autodafe? Here BM appropriate the symbolism of Easter to use as part of their own lore and apply it to Su's transformation from a schoolgirl into a metal goddess to save "metal". They have also taken Shinto images of the fox that is associated with Inari so they are borrowing from many traditions. "Babymetal DEATH" is how BM usually says "hello" and introduces themselves. It's the first song on their first album and has often been used to start a concert. But here it is used as a big messianic, pun of a finale. To English speakers the song seems to be all about death, when in fact it is BM saying who they are and affirming their presence. The lyrics go "Death, Death, Death.. , Su-Metal desu"...etc. The "desu" sounds like "death" to Western ears, but in Japanese it means "to be" - so the words are " Death, Death, Death... I am Su-metal, I am Yuimetal, I am Moametal, We are Babymetal". This concert, Legend 1997, celebrated Su's 16 birthday and her transition in BM lore from a school girl into a metal goddess. It also traced the transformation of BM from an idol group to a metal band as they start with a lip synced, dubstep version of "Headbanger" and end with this live version of Babymetal DEATH backed by the Kami band. The DNA helix in the intro visuals to this song also appears on Su's stick mic in Headbanger and is an icon of life and transformation. This is reiterated in the use of the Christian iconography of the crucifixion. Death and life exist together... #notacult. From this concert they would start their first European tour and have a break out performance at Sonisphere 2014.
@Grington300
@Grington300 Жыл бұрын
Great reaction. There can't be many bands who would crucify their lead singer on stage to celebrate her 16th birthday (they only do that on special occasions) - Yui and Moa are 18 months younger than Su, so they were still only 14. This was 3 months before they released their first album .... and from just 18 months or so before where they played their first solo headline show in a venue with a capacity of 150 they were able to sell out this venue (Makuhari Messe) with about 9,000 fans. This show was the final step in BABYMETAL transitioning from Idol group sub-unit (it had this narrative running all the way through and even started with a lip-synced dance remix of their song 'Headbanger') to independent metal band - it was also Su-metal's final step in her transition from J-Pop Idol - she was sacrificing her human existence and life as Suzuka Nakamoto, a J-Pop Idol, to be reborn as Su-metal, a Metal Goddess chosen to lead the Metal Resistance. 'BABYMETAL Death' was the first track on the first album and was most often used as the show opener (this time it was the finale). It is the perfect introduction - that is what the lyrics are:- "B-A-B-Y-M-E-T-A-L Death Death Death Death Death Death. Su-metal death. Yuimetal death. Moametal death. BABYMETAL death. Death Death Death Death Death Death." It is a play on words. There is no 'TH' sound in Japanese, so to a Japanese speaker the English word death sounds like desu (the U is silent) spoken with a slight lisp. Desu means "To be - I am - you are - we are - it is" etc. All they were doing throughout the song was introducing themselves by name and introducing BABYMETAL by name. There were a couple of homages in this performance too. The opening drum riff is an homage to Metallica's 'One' (as you noticed) and the statue crumbling at the end pays homage to Metallica's Justice For All tour of 1989 where they also had a statue (Lady Justice) crumble at the end of their shows. The neck brace is a tribute to X Japan drummer/pianist/songwriter/composer Yoshiki who damaged his neck so badly headbanging that he had to wear a neck brace a lot of the time, especially when performing.

@@Killermcknight I am no authority on Idol groups (the concept was alien to me too), so from wikipedia this is what I've found about Idols: "An idol is a type of entertainer whose image is manufactured to cultivate a dedicated consumer fan following. Talent agencies commercialize idols by recruiting preteens and teenagers with little or no experience in the entertainment industry, and market them as aspiring stars." "Music from idol singers is generally categorized under J-pop, though talent agencies may label them under the sub-genre "idol pop" for further distinction. Many idol singers find success as groups rather than individually. Within each idol group, the members are sometimes given distinct roles. One example of a role is the center, who occupies the center position in the group's choreography and thus receives the most focus." BABYMETAL formed as a sub-unit of a group called Sakura Gakuin, an Idol group put together by the Amuse Talent Agency to coach and train the most talented young girls (aged between 10 and 15) signed up to them in all aspects of the entertainment industry (singing, dancing, acting, stage management, modelling, writing and so on) with a view to them deciding which direction to take to further their careers when they were older. Sakura Gakuin had a school theme, so when the girls were 15 and would graduate from their everyday schools so they would also graduate from Sakura Gakuin. Younger girls would be transferred in to take the place of those who had graduated each year. Running with the school theme, sub-units (groups of maybe 3 of the girls) like after school clubs (eg cooking, tennis, science, baton twirling etc) would have their own themed song and dance routines they would perform at Sakura Gakuin shows and at Idol Festivals where many other Idol groups would also perform. BABYMETAL started as the Heavy Music club. BABYMETAL was the only sub-unit to separate from Sakura Gakuin to become an independent act. Su-metal was 15 and it was time for her to graduate in 2013, but BABYMETAL had found their own audience and were making a name for themselves, so their producer and Amuse decided that rather than her try to start a career as a solo artist BABYMETAL should continue to develop and should go with her as her (and the other two girls') vehicle. Legend 1997 was the final step of that separation.

Hey, good reaction Killer. You had to tick this one off before doing any guide for Babymetal. If you are going to do one of the guides as a reaction, may I respectfully suggest you do the 40ish minute version of Cryptic Misery's guide ... All you need to know about Babymetal (or something like that, just search Cryptic Misery and you will find it). There are two versions, one runs just under 20 minutes and the other hits around 40 minutes. Do the 40-minute version because it gives you so much more information on the group, and much, much more information about Babymetal's lore. The video is getting a little old now, in the face of recent activities by Babymetal, but it is still, by far, the best of the guides. Anyway, you choose what you like, but just know that there will be many Babymetal fans who will ride along with you for the 40 minutes of the video and really enjoy watching your journey of discovery about Babymetal. Keep the good stuff coming.

Nice reaction. So I'll give you little tricks to tell the girls apart easier since that can be a challenge. Su is the easiest. She has the mic and she always has a ponytail. Moa and Yui both will always have pigtails. Moa, however, has huge dimples when she smiles and she has straighter hair. Yui, while she doesn't have dimples, has baby cheeks and they are quite chubby. She is also very proud of her cute chubby cheeks. Her hair is more curly than Moa's and as a result her pigtails tend to stick out more on either side than Moa's does. Later on, when Yui leaves, you will see 1 of 3 "Avengers" with Momoko being the one that performs more often than not. All the avengers will have their hair done in pigtail buns. So buns where the pigtails would have been. Also, to me, they don't look super thin has Su, Moa, or Yui. Not saying they are fat, just that since they haven't been doing this as long as the main girls, they are as skinny. To me it is pretty visible. Maybe the costumes they were is somehow different and I haven't noticed the difference in the costumes, but they don't look quite as skinny. Anyhow, that should help you figure the 3 girls apart. Great reaction, and have fun reacting to these girls. They are an amazing group to listen and enjoy.

Thus, the girls began to learn how to be mindful from metal music. Needless to say, they need to be prepared. Today, the girls are moving toward maturity, becoming more objective about themselves and more aware of their own self-worth. They are beginning to recognize their own self-worth more strongly. Nice reaction and yes you got some bits right but I can't forgive you that you said Mo once again instead of Moa :( Just kidding of course lol Great that you picked up that intro riff which is intentionally a reference to Metallica's "One". Also the statue in the back is a reference to Metallicas "And Justice For All" album and tour. The neckbrace is a homage to X-Japans drummer Yoshiki who had to have an emergency surgery and needed to wear a neckbrace for quite some time. Also when the girls say "Su-metal desu" they cross their arms to represent the X for X-Japan. The introduction they do is a simple play on words, since they say "desu" (the u is usually silent in Japanese), which means I am or we are, but mispronouncing it slightly off to make it sound like "death". Yes, Suzuka Nakamoto was sacrificed to be reborn as Su-metal, ending her J-pop career and making the transition to metal goddess complete. Btw how was your 16th birthday party? Nice reaction. As I always say no body is ready for death. Especially not Babymetal death. I think you got most of what was portrayed there. Su gave up being an idol jpop star for the metal goddess life. I don't know anybody who celebrated their 16th birthday like that. Babymetal is unique. It's one thing to do some stage theatrics about that. It becomes a whole other thing when Su makes it happen. Our metal goddes Su-metal. Some fun things here as other have pointed out the tribute Babymetal made during the show. And as heavy as that was, they still found a way to be kawaii. Yui and Moa giggle as they go to put the neck brace on. Moa fixes Su's hair because you have to look good when we sacrifice you. lol. Su said when the fire shot up, she could feel the heat and felt it was too close for comfort. I've noticed since then the pyro has moved farther and farther away from her. Smart. They did get to meet Metallica not to long after this. Maybe some advice came their way. Also, there is an even heavier version of this song. They did the Shin Death version for the 10 years of Babymetal at the Budokan. That's another cool thing about Babymetal is they will change a song. So just because you reacted to a song once don't think it ends there with that song. all that heaviness and all that sacrifice and all they said was I am Su-metal, I am Yuimetal, I am Moametal. Babymetal. Simple but a lot of fun. The statue represented her Jpop idol self. Which is destroyed. Su is metal now and ever more. Yui and Moa got sacrificed at the start of another concert. and Su, Moa and Momoko got sacrificed at the start of the 10 years of Babymetal concerts. If you're thinking that means Momoko has got to be the new third member, come April. You're not alone in that thought. Enjoy the journey through the foxhole and into the Babymetal galaxy of music.

Yeah... or I'm very wrong or this doesn't look or sound like a j-pop performance. 😁 The whole concert (Legend 1997) is an allegory about their transformation from a j-pop idol group sub-unit to a legit metal band. And this was its final number: Su-metal's sacrifice as an idol and human just to reborn as a metal goddess. And yes, the beat in the beginning ("ONE") and the final statue crumbling ("Lady Justice") are homages to Metallica. The neckbrace thing is a homage to X-Japan's Yoshiki Hayashi who had to wear one (even performing live) due too much headbanging. The lore about this topic is the base for their "Headbanger" music video. I believe this is the coolest and heaviest way to celebrate your 16th birthday, isn't it? Until next time!

There is no religious significance to the production of the statue of the Virgin falling over. I am sorry if it offends you. The Japanese view of life is that life is a discipline for growth and that to live is to kill yesterday's self and create a better today's self. In my personal opinion as a Japanese, this performance can be interpreted as following the traditional Japanese coming-of-age ritual of 'Genpuku’.The scene where the statue of the Virgin falls symbolises independence from motherhood and is an expression of Suzuka Nakamoto, who debuted as a singer at the age of 10, abandoning her career as an anime song singer and girl-pop singer to be reborn as a metal queen. Again, I hope you understand that there are no religious connotations. Monotheism is a minority religion in Japan, so it is either tolerant or insensitive.🌏🌍🌎🤘🦊🤘 英語は話せないのでDeepL翻訳で失礼します。 Sorry. It's 'Genpuku', not 'gembuku', which is also on Wikipedia, if you're interested.

How you tell the difference between Yui and Moa. YUIMETAL would often be on SU's left and MOAMETAL on SU's right. or vice versa depending on the song.

So, Yui clearly says "Yui-metal desu", then Moa super-clearly says "Moa-metal desu" (ok, yes, "desu" sounds like "dess") Reactor hears that and says "Moa?" and then "Yui" Might need a hearing test, buddy. Nice reaction otherwise.

@@Killermcknight sorry if I came across snarky! not my intention, but on reading it back it must have come across like that! I must stop commenting in the small hours. BTW I think you can call yourself a fan when you can recognise Yui or Moa, by sight, when just one of them is visible (it's easier when you can see both); I still have trouble some days even after nearly 10 years of following them. I'm really enjoying seeing your journey, "travelling down the fox hole", and BTW LOL'd a fair bit when you were showing your gf Jinjer's Pisces recently🙂 Have fun with your reactions and don't mind snarky reactions from us grumps - just try to avoid slipping into the clichés, like "and without further ado" and the pointless 3,2,1 countdowns before starting that so many other reactors keep doing that drive me bonkers! Oh, lastly, I think you'll get a lot out of reacting to "the guide".

You're correct that they didn't stop doing Jpop-metal fusion after this. Their lore is generally just a fun extra thing and either doesn't really mean much of anything or is different from what you might expect because of other context. For example, the lore here was probably inspired by Su having recently "graduated" from Sakura Gakuin, the straight-up Jpop group from which Babymetal originated, so now she was no longer a Jpop star, right? Something along those lines anyway. Re: what you said about writing a song called 'Death'...well technically it's called 'Babymetal Death', and that's important because in Japanese, the word for 'I am' or 'we are' is 'です' or 'desu'. The 'u' is usually elided, meaning it's just pronounced 'des'...which sounds like 'death'. So the whole thing is actually just one big pun (backed by some killer riffs as you observed). If you listen closely you can even hear that they're saying 'desu' and not 'death', so basically this is just them introducing themselves 😄 There is actually one other song that's kinda spoiled by the guide, which is BxMxC. The MV for that is fine, though it's of course better live. If you want to hear it live, you'd have to use the Babymetal Reactor Resource. It's not a huge deal though. Great reaction by the way! Looking forward to the next one.
