Welcome to Billy Strings!!! Truly gifted guy.can play banko well, also...check out the utube of he and his dad performing. He learned from his dad. So talent came down the family tree. Billy is his first name.strings is a nickname he was given ( you might understand why) and it stuck. He is one talented guy, I love bluegrass period, he is under 30. He can only improve. He writes his own songs too

What you just saw was virtuoso performances on the banjo and mandolin, and then a mind-melting solo that is a combination of blue-grass and heavy metal. This style that Billy Strings is introducing is as revolutionary as it gets, in the music world. Your reaction, as favorable as it was, should have been far more impressed. This isn't just "good"...this is truly phenomenal musicianship, at all levels.

Billy is amazing, he is an old soul in a young man's body. He is probably the best acoustic guitar picker on the planet right now. The instrument you asked about is called a mandolin. It is an American instrument that has evolved through Scotch-Irish folk music and Appalachian mountain music. He is a great performer with a mesmerizing voice and a wealth of knowledge of old American folk and bluegrass music.

It's always entertaining seeing people try to figure out what the mandolin is, only because I grew up in central Pennsylvania and it's pretty common there. I think you have become my favorite reaction channel. A lot of variety, but you have an incredible ear for good music, regardless of genre. Which I love, bc I listen to so many different genres myself and wish more ppl I knew did.

Wow, good catch M B! Billy started playing with the assistance of his stepdad (great singer and player in his own right) playing the likes of Doc Watson. He did play in a metal band for a while although I don't know him from that era. I discovered him at the Bluegrass festivals here in Michigan playing with his stepdad. Then he joined up with Don Julin a world-class mandolin player and man did they tear up the festival scene. I had the great privilege of seeing him play live many times. I knew he was destined for great things. From a selfish point of view I'm really bummed that I don't have the opportunities to see him like I used to, but really glad he's doing so well on the world stage.

Billy Strings (born William Apostol but using the nickname given to him by his aunt when he was a guitar obsessed 8 year old) was growing fast then, but not even close to where he his now, headlining major venues.
