Hi Dereck, at that time Serge Gainsbourg was Brigitte Bardot's lover and he produced a lot of smash hits for her : "Initials B.B.", "Bonnie and Clyde", "Comic strip", "Je t'aime moi non plus" and the huge hit in 1967 "Harley Davidson". But the fascination Serge had towards Brigitte is even older since he composed "l'appareil à sous" in the early sixties. He even had a small role in the 1959 film "Voulez-vous danser avec moi?" directed by Michel Boisrond. Between 1957 to the late eighties, Brigitte Bardot was approched by Hollywood industry in order to compete with Marily Monroe but she always rejected the different offers.

Serge’son, Lulu actually reinterpreted this song with Scarlett Johansson in a bilingual French-English version. Not as good of course but the arrangement is quite good. I love how you can feel all the love, passion and admiration Serge Gainsbourg had for Brigitte Bardot. The lyrics are basically an adapted translation of a poem written in english by Bonnie Parker herself called "The trail' s end" written a few weeks before her and Clyde' s death. Look it up. So Gainsbourg f*ed up his voice pretty bad with cigarette and alcohol over time, that' s why the "spoken word" delivery. But on his first albums he could really sing although, arguably he became really creative with composition and production in the mid-60's and onward.

But take it all in all; our troubles are small, till we get like Bonnie and Clyde. If a policeman is killed in Dallas and they have no clue or guide. If they can't find a fiend, they just wipe their slate clean and hang it on Bonnie and Clyde. There's two crimes committed in America not accredited to the Barrow mob. They had no hand; in the kidnap demand, nor the Kansas City Depot job. A newsboy once said to his buddy; "I wish old Clyde would get jumped. In these awfull hard times; we'd make a few dimes, if five or six cops would get bumped" The police haven't got the report yet but Clyde called me up today. Where the women are kin; and the men are men, and they won't "stool" on Bonnie and Clyde. If they try to act like citizens and rent them a nice little flat. About the third night; they're invited to fight, by a sub-gun's rat-tat-tat. They don't think they're too smart or desperate they know that the law always wins. They've been shot at before; but they do not ignore, that death is the wages of sin. Some day they'll go down together they'll bury them side by side. To few it'll be grief, to the law a relief but it's death for Bonnie and Clyde.

This sounds so modern. Hard to believe it came out in 1968. Bardot does indeed look stunning. You do know she was a major movie star back in the 50s and 60s? Just as a side note, the adolescent John Lennon was said to be obsessed with Bardot, so much so that he persuaded his girlfriends and first wife Cynthia to change their look to appear more like Bardot. Apparently, they finally met in 1968 but the meeting was not quite a success, because of language difficulties and an overly nervous Lennon having dropped acid before the meeting which rendered him practically mute in her presence.
