That's the legendary harp player Norton Buffalo. He's using 4 different harps - F, Eb, Db, and C. Norton switches (in that order) at every chord change, cycling from the F harp to the C harp as the changes repeat. Nice choice, Debbie.

Glad you pitched in about that - Norton was a real standout here ! Luckily I saw him that same year, when he fronted his own band, alternating between singing and blowing harp. The guy was so talented and seemed to be a fine bro too.

Bonnie Bonnie, she is quite frankly an institution. She has played with seeming everybody. Nice that you covered this so close to the Prince remembrance. She had a deep connection to Minneapolis and they knew each other well. RIP Rodger and Steve miss you both.

Now that you mention Prince: I think Bonnie said in the Questlove Supreme podcast that Prince wanted to sign her to Paisley Park.

@@NathanVeenstra Yes that is true. Bonnie's brother was well into the Minneapolis scene for decades and she cut her first album there. Bonnie was very generous to Prince while he was in high school. when he had the chance he repaid it. My information is that it was a backup plan and that year at the same time Stevie Ray Vaughn played the State Fair and they all got together and worked out a better deal. Don't get me wrong there were a lot of people trying to help Bonnie at the time, but the offer on the table helped a ton with SRVs push.

The harp player is Norton Buffalo, and yes, he is the first person to do the changing harp trick. Because of the nature of the song, he had to change to a different key of harp for EACH LINE of the solo. 7 changes total in this song, originally 8, through 4 harps, then those 4 again. Freakin amazing, he was.

This was the first time I saw Bonnie - live on the Midnight Special. I've seen her perform live in the years since then. She's at her best with her Fender Strat and bottleneck slide playing the blues, but even here, fingerpicking, she's a great guitarist and a fantastic singer.

I highly recommend that you check out some songs from her first 2 albums. She loved the blues written by women in the 1920’s and ‘30’s. “ Mighty Tight Woman “, a 1927 song written by Sippie Wallace is one of my favorites. In 1927 slang, ‘tight’ could mean drunk, and it could mean outstanding. So,according to the lyrics, the woman in the song is outstanding in everything she does. “Woman Be Wise” is also great. A song by Bonnie is “Love Me Like a Man”, and it’s such a dive into the blues. These really should be heard from the albums (Spotify?) as this is her early work(1970’s), not from any later videos.

Nothing like those early Bonnie albums ! Her voice was so pure when she was young. She was sure smart to realize there was a niche for a young white woman in the blues back then, and took to covering those singers of a bygone era. Another one I love is “ Kokomo Blues”. As much as she does well at other genres, the blues is where she really stands tall.

Bonnie is a treasure! Most of the songs folks react to are from her later, commercial success. But I am a sucker for her earlier works ever since she blew my mind when I was 17 working as a lifeguard and this cover came on the radio. There weren't many female artists rockin the airwaves in the mid-70s. She became my idol. She can make any cover her own. Please check out her cover of Mose Allison's "Everybody's Cryin' Mercy." And for a more gospel kind of sound, she did an amazing duet with Maria Muldaur in a tribute to Sister Rosetta Tharpe, "My Journey to the Sky". I wore out her Sweet Forgiveness album, as well. Her super mainstream breakthrough came with Nick of Time in the late 80s; I believe it was like her 10th album. A deep dive here goes REALLY deep.

This is a cover of Runaway by Del Shannon, a # 1 hit released in early 1960s. Bonnie Raitt always soulful, sometimes sweet and sometimes very gritty. She's a blues singer with a little rock and folk. I love this cover of the Del Shannon song. But this also represents maybe the lowest poiunt in her career, as I recall as alcoholism took over her life and she lost her recording contract. But a few years later she made a tremendous comeback with the Nick of Time album. I have followed her career since the early 70s and loved every one of her records. She's a treasure. The great Freebo here n the fretless bass.

It sounded like the fellow on harp switched keys, so he switched harmonicas. I'm just guessing here. Oh...and since Bonnie Raitt's first album came out in 1971 and Tina Marie's first popular song came out in 1979, I would say Tina Marie sounded a little like Bonnie, not the other way around. :-)
