Tom Sholz recorded this album in his basement. He was a student at MIT University and designed and developed his own sound system, amps, pedals etc. He played nearly all the instruments on this album and picked up other musicians to play live..
@neechee51505 күн бұрын
@arthurbrickles5430 The documentation and studio records are very clear on this matter. Tom recorded ONLY the instrumental tracks for 8 of the 9 songs at his home studio. It is very well documented that ALL of Brads vocals except one song were recorded by Boylan at Capital Studios Studio C. It is also very well documented that the entire song Let Me Take You Home which was written by Brad was recorded at The Record Plant LA. It is also very well documented that this record was mixed at Westlake Studios in LA as well. Tom most certainly did not develop any PA or sound system gear. That is complete fiction. Tom is NOT a big guitar effects pedals kind of guy and the Rockman is not a guitar pedal in any way shape or form and anyone who tries to conflate what the Rockman truly is with a guitar effects pedal has never used one. The record is very clear on this fact--Scholz R and D ONLY brought two guitar pedals to market. One was a distortion generator and the other was a pedal that allowed an electric guitar to emulate the sound of an acoustic guitar. The vast majority of the products by Scholz R and D were rack mounted guitar preamps, guitar power amps and guitar signal processing/effects units and the power soak

Boston's debut album soared, with three singles becoming Top 40 hits. All eight songs on the album received regular airplay on classic rock radio decades later. Taking a mere three weeks to earn an RIAA Gold Record Award (500,000 in unit sales) in 1976 and a Platinum Award (1,000,000 in unit sales) after three months on November 11, 1976, it was the fastest-selling debut album for any American group. It has continued to sell very well, accumulating 9,000,000 in sales by the 10th anniversary in 1986, reaching Diamond in 1990, and 17× platinum by 2003.

It took Tom and Brad many years to put together this debut album, and yeah it really shows as the quality is off the charts all the way through. They had good albums and good songs later, but there was almost no way they could reach this peak in such a short period of time on subsequent albums. Still an incredible band, no one really sounded like them before or since.
@neechee51505 күн бұрын
@dryzalizer The documentation and history on this record is very clear. Tom started recording the tracks that made it to this record in early 1975 and the record was finished and released in Aug 1976. What is true is that the songs on this record were written and then rewritten and had different arrangements done before the songs ended up being what we hear on the record today. While it took Tom 30 years to finally come clean, in the liner notes of the post litigation 2006 Scholz remaster of the debut Boston record, Tom finally gave credit to Brad and to a lesser extent Jim Masdea for all of the arrangement work that they did on the songs on this record. Tom also finally came clean about the HUGE contributions that Barry made in terms of guitar work on three songs on this record. This is all documented as fact in the liner notes found in the 2006 Scholz remaster of the debut Boston record. It is also well documented that Tom himself wrote these liner notes.

@russellevans2446 The ONLY tracks that Tom recorded that made it to the record are the instrumental tracks to 8 of the 9 songs. ALL of Brads vocals were recorded by Boylan at one of two LA studios--Capital Studios Studio C and The Record Plant LA (Let Me Take You Home only). The entire song Let Me Take You Home which was written by Brad was recorded by the band as pictured on the back of the record at The Record Plant LA by Boylan. After Boylan fixed Toms drum tracks, the record was mixed in LA at Westlake Studios. When the truth is told close to 20% if not more of the tracks on this record were recorded in LA. The liner notes in every copy of the debut record make it clear that Capital Studios, The Record Plant and Westlake studios were used to either record portions of this record or to mix the record

There's not a song on this debut album that wasn't a hit (no fillers there)! It just seemed to get better and better with every song played... I was a teen when this cam out and have been rockin to the tunes every since. The fact that MIT educated engineer Tom Sholz engineered this to such precision, made this album absolutely years ahead of the game. The drum work and bass were fantastic and I'm so glad you feature them in your reactions. The make-up of these songs and how they change it up so many times make the song rock and flow. Welcome to Boston and enjoy it as I did. Great reaction!
@neechee515011 күн бұрын
@chrisbateman5358 Tom does not like to admit this but Boylan rejected Toms drum tracks because they were too amateurish (Boylans word not mine) to use on the record. To remedy these problems, Boylan hired LA engineer Paul Grupp to go to Toms studio to tutor him on how to record drums and acoustic instruments properly. Boylan then directed Tom to rerecord all drum tracks and some of the acoustic instrument tracks using what Grupp taught him. This notion that Tom did not have any help engineering and producing this record is FICTION.
