carly is lamenting about being naively young when she fell for a suave, self-absorbed, vain man of considerable means/wealth - race horse owner at saratoga springs, takes private jet to nova scotia, is always where he's "supposed to be"/where the scene is. bj, the kicker that asia is talking about is if he's not there then he's with the wife of a close friend 😏 the line "clouds in my coffee" was supposedly struck when she was on a plane and noticed the reflection of the clouds were like cream in her coffee. carly's incredible word painting of this song is gorgeous ❤

The Classic opening bass riff is played by Klaus Voormann. Carly credits Klaus for setting the table for the songs vibe. Klaus is most famous for designing the album cover for the Beatles 1966 masterpiece "Revolver'. Which Klaus won a Grammy Award. Klaus ran in the Beatles inner circle starting back in October of 1960. Two years before Ringo joined and 3 years before Beatlemania exploded in the United Kingdom. Klaus has recorded on many solo Beatles songs and remains their life long friend. RNB

Back in 2010, MSM reported that Carly Simon had revealed the name of the person the song is about. On her album "Never Been Gone," Simon whispers a name during an instrumental break. The name is "David." Who could this be? Suspects include; David Geffen who founded Asylum records in 1971. Simon was with Elektra which merged with Asylum in 1972 and Geffen was put in charge. You're So Vain was released in 1972. Other David's of the era and in Simon's orbit are David Crosby of Crosby, Stills and Nash, and David Cassidy of The Partridge Family fame. Warren Beatty's mother was from Nova Scotia but no-one has been able to confirm if he flew his LearJet there to view a total eclipse of the sun. Also, another clue is found in a racehorse winning. My preference is toward David Geffen, as he's within her immediate circle. In the 70's everyone believed Mick Jagger or Warren Beatty, but Jagger's voice could be clearly heard on backing vocals (Jagger was a prolific backing singer, he is very generous with his time) and so is unlikely. Beatty was world famous for his vanity alone and so he held the highest rank of likely suspects.

This is perhaps the most ironic song in history - Sorry, Alanis Morissette - because "You probably think this song is about you" … well, it kind of IS about the 3 people she was singing about. It isn't solely about any one of the three, but each verse is about a different one and then the chorus after goes with the verse. It's why this is one of my favorite songs-the sheer irony of it all.

I believe she wrote this about Warren Beatie. He even took a run at Madonna in the 80's as well.

A big hit and a favorite when I was a young kid - and Mick Jagger on vocals with her. Check out 'You Belong to Me,' 'Nobody Does It Better (The Spy Who Loved Me) (a Bond Theme) and 'That's the Way I've Always Heard It Should Be.'

Marilyn Manson did this 2012. Chocolate Starfish did this in 1994. Faster Pussy Cat did this song in 2000. Susanna Hoffs and Mathew Sweet did this song in 2009. Carly Simon wrote the song in 1971 and Released in 1972. Mick Jaeger contributed uncredited backing Vocals. Janet Jackson sampled the song in 2001 in her song "Son of a Gun" (I Betcha You This Song is About You). This song made it to #1 on Billboard's Hot 100. There are according to Carly and others 3 men this song is about. One is Warren Beatty who the others are ones name seems to David last name unknown. From what I have found out. She has given little clues for close to 50 years now. iirc Thank you for your reaction Asia and BJ.

In the mid to late '90s there was a band named Marilyn Manson fronted by a guy who went by that name. Their most notorious record was produced by this guy named Trent Reznor, who was the front/main man for this band called Nine Inch Nails. After Reznor produced Manson, he released a song called "Starf•••rs, Inc.". The song included the line _"All our pain, how did you think we'd get by without you? You're so vain I bet you think this song is about you. Don't you? Don't you?"_ By that time he and Manson (the singer) had fallen out, and the public just _knew_ the song was about Manson. The funny thing is that a couple of years later Manson ended up doing some guest spots for NIN and wouldn't you know it, he made his entrance during "Starf•••rs, Inc.". I don't think those guys stayed friends, but it was funny to see.

Faster Pussycat did a cover of this song during the hair metal days. Mick Jagger is singing backing vocals on the chorus which is ironic because many thought the song's lyrics were about him.

Yes, Carly Simon wrote the song, herself, back in 1971. The song has been rumored to be about Carly's ex James Taylor, singer Mick Jagger, actor Warren Beatty, and others. Before the song became a hit single in 1972, Simon told an interviewer that the song was about "men", not a specific "man" In 1983, Carly stated in an interview that the song is definitely NOT about Mick Jagger, as Mick sang the backing vocals on the song. In 1993, David Bowie's ex-wife Angie Bowie wrote in her autobiography that she (Angie) is the "wife of a close friend" claiming that Mick Jagger was "obsessed" with her. Carly was married to singer James Taylor at the time she wrote the song. -btw - Check out James Taylor ("Fire and Rain", "You've Got a Friend"; "Country Road"; "Long Ago and Far Away"; "How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved by You)"; "Shower the People"; "Handy Man"; "Your Smiling Face"; "Her Town Too" ) Or check out Carly & James' duet: "Mockingbird" David Bowie, David Cassidy and Cat Stevens have all been rumored to be the subject of the song. To Asia's point regarding the line, "You're so vain, you probably think the song is about you" - actor Warren Beatty has claimed the song is about him for the past 50 years. He's had numerous interviews where he states the song is about him. And yes, Beatty is VAIN ENOUGH to think the world revolves around him.. Carly has given clues over the years, and remember, the song has THREE verses. Each verse is about a different man. Carly confirmed in 2016 that the 2nd verse is definitely about Warren Beatty.

The rumor is that this song is about Warren Beatty an old time famous actor and ladies man. They dated for a while. Mick Jagger from the Rolling Stones is singing back up. Carly Simon is classic. An unbelievable song writer. She and James Taylor (another rabbit hole you should go down)were an iconic musical married couple. You must go down her rabbit hole too. 'That's the Way I've Always Heard it Should Be'....her first major hit and so, so many after that
