Greasers are like rockabliies. Greased up hairs, black leather jackets, rebels. Usually likes working on cars and motorcycles. RIP Olivia Newton John! Great singer and actress in the '70s and '80s. Longtime breast cancer survivor. Do more Olivia video/song reactions! From the movie, Grease, correct. Disco song from the disco era (70s and early '80s). Interesting movies, throwback to the '50s, early '60s Doo Wop, soda pop, poodle skirt era. Frankie Valli was versatile as well and was ''50s, 60s, '70s and '80s. Many songs and videos. Fun fact. Robert Stigwood contacted Barry Gibb and asked him to write the title song for the movie. He asked whats it about. Stigwood only told him one word "Grease". Barry Gibb came up with this song and wanted Frankie Valli to sing it because he was one of his idols from when he was young and history was made.

to us contemporaries that are image obsessed.. it's just an image. But back then.. to them.. it's all they had to dress in and be appropriate. Greasers were the people from the wrong side of the tracks.. they're the poor people. If you watch the movie The Outsiders.. you learn about the reality of being a greaser.. back in the day. The Outsiders starred: Matt Dillon, Tom Cruise, Patrick Swayze, Emilio Estevez, Rob Lowe, Diane Lane, Leif Garrett, Ralph Macchio, C. Thomas Howell. It's worth the time..

Per Songfacts. Speaking with Billboard magazine in a 2013 interview, Frakie Valli explained how he came to record this song. "Barry Gibb called and said, 'I wrote a song. I think it's for you. It's going to be the title song for this motion picture," Valli recalled. "My manager at the time was Allan Carr, who was partners in Grease with Robert Stigwood. He called and said, 'What do you want to do? Do you want to be in the movie? Or sing the title song?' Well, I had already heard the title song, and I loved it. I called Don Costa up and told him to come over right away and hear this song. He said, 'If you don't record this song, you're crazy.' So I said, 'What's the song if I want to be in the movie?' And they said 'Beauty School Dropout.' It was done by Frankie Avalon. It never became a hit, but he made a lot of money from it being on the soundtrack. But 'Grease' was one of the biggest records I ever had in my career."

NOTES: "Grease" was originally an off-off Broardway musical by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey. Named after the 1950s United States working-class youth subculture known as "Greasers." Grease was first performed in 1971 in the original Kingston Mines nightclub in Chicago. In June 7, 1972, the production moved to the Broadhurst Theatre on Broadway, and on November 21, it moved to the Royale Theatre there, where it ran until January 27, 1980. For the five final weeks of the run, the show moved to the larger Majestic Theatre. By the time it closed on April 13, 1980, it had run 3,388 performances. The 1978 movie's title song "Grease'" was composed by Barry Gibb for the movie, and was not in the Broadway play. The song was a kind of DISCO/FUNK with a hint of ROCK & ROLL, and sung by Frankie Valli (BIG GIRLS DON'T CRY, SHERRI BABY) to help give it a little more 50s flavor. The original Broadway cast included BARRY BOSTWICK (ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW) as Danny and Carole Demas as Sandy, with ADRIANNE BARBEAU (MAUDE) as Rizzo, Timothy Meyers as Kenickie, Alan Paul, and Walter Bobbie and Marya Small in supporting roles. Replacements later in the run included JEFF CONWAY (TAXI) as Danny, Candice Earley as Sandy, John Lansing as Danny, Peter Gallagher as Danny, RICHARD GERE (AN OFFICER AND GENTLEMAN) as Sonny, Ilene Graff as Sandy, Randee Heller as Rizzo, MARILU HENNER (TAXI) as Marty, Judy Kaye as Rizzo, Marcia Mitzman Gaven as Rizzo, the late PATRICK SWAYZE (DIRTY DANCING) as Danny, JOHN TRAVOLTA (SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER) as Doody, Treat Williams as Danny, Laurie Graff as Frenchy, and Jerry Zaks as Kenickie. [P.S. - R.I.P. OLIVIA NEWTON JOHN]

Grease is 1950's nostalgia made in the 1970's. Most of the other songs sound like they came out of the 50's, filtered through that weird "musical" style Brad mentions... like a 50's rock n roll song, but with a chorus singing backup, or a bunch of different people singing verses instead of one vocalist.

Brad! I think you hit on the thing that made Grease ground breaking and popular as both a Broadway musical and a movie. It used a pop music structure for it songs. Pop music structure being -- verse, chorus (or hook), verse, chorus, bridge, verse, chorus. Where traditional show tune are usually a rhyming narrative set to music that is often just verse after verse after verse without a chorus. A good example of the show tune style is the music from the Broadway musical and the movie the Sound of Music. As an example, in the Sound of Music there is a song called Sixteen Going on Seventeen which has nine versus and no hook or chorus.

Yes. As others have said, our wonderful BeeGees wrote this song. How much influence did the BeeGees have in our generation? Tons. Grease is a term for "greasers". Those were the guys that literally greased their hair back..they were influential to the generation before the hippies. You were right. Slicked back hair and fast cars, rock and roll of the times. A good example would be the guy who played "The Fonz" on the 70's tv show, "Happy Days", which would have been referencing the 1950's era.

Also funny .. even though the 50's were in living memory of everyone in the 70's it was the worst time to make period pieces .. For some reason no one, not even actors for a role, was willing to cut their hair in the 1970s! I remember Grace Jones around 1980 complaining about this when she was making videos .. she said 'people, it will grow back!"

This is the song playing in the opening credits which I think Brad means as not sounding like the songs in a typical musical. I'm a punk guy/metalhead but love this song!

I don't know about anyone else, but I always get a "blurred blend" of this soundtrack and the one for Saturday Night Fever. Maybe it's cos both movies came out around the same time (1977-1979), or maybe cos both star John Travolta, or cos both have that funky "disco" sound (especially SNF, but even some of that 1950s "greaser" stuff from Grease sounded funky, especially this "titular" song)? Maybe all the above? It's okay though, cos it's all good stuff to me.

I always thought it was odd that the theme song for a musical about a high school in 1959 utilizes a 70s disco style. Since the movie adaptation came out in ‘78, I’m guessing it helped sell the movie and the soundtrack. Still, it’s odd to me.

Did i just hear: "your forehead lookin' greasy" - that's hilarious ! Lex - your reaction is equally hilarious ! Funny reaction, thank you. Yes - anyone my age > 50 - saw this in the movie theatre as a kid and loved it. And quite fitting that you post this on the day after Olivia Newton-John passes away. Very nice. Thanks for your reaction.

"Grease" had multiple meanings, the car oil, also in the 50's and 60's boys wanted to style their hair in the popular way of their favorite rock and roll idols of the time using a pomade like "Brylcream" a popular brand at the time. There is an animated image of the product during the opening credits of the film. Grease also meant something cool or a smooth style like a souped up car "greased lightning".

Written by The Bee Gees. It was written especially for the movie. Grease was musical celebrating Rock n Roll. It was at the time of Happy Days, Lavern and Shirley and it was all started off by American Grafitti. So Grease was just part of the whole nostalgic vibe

GREASE = The movie was late 70s/early 80s about the GOOD OLD HAPPY DAYS, way back in the 50s in ROCK ROOTS days! Ever heard of 'Greasers'? They were the guys with greased, slicked back hair in duck tails and maybe a 'flat top' cut. So GREASER became another word for those wild and cray 'Rock 'n Roll' kids. Grease is the word!

This was the theme song, not a song INSIDE the movie. The movie isn't like a "musical" of the sort where everything is sung. It's a movie with lots of musical numbers throughout.

It's straight up Disco. That's what was hot at the time. It was a good marketing plan. Have a hit pop song in a 50's musical. Got people to see the film and buy the soundtrack. That song, and Olivia's Hopelessly Devoted were not in the original Broadway musical. They were added, mainly, to get the album radio play. Both zipped up the charts, as did the movie.

Brad & Lex - Grease is not meant literally. The whole thing is set in the 1950's. And in those days, some guys were called Greasers. They were the cool guys of the time. Like James Dean. And if you don't know who he is, he is like Fonzie from the tv show Happy Days.

I can’t remember if y’all done it.. however “You’re the one that I want” official video is great too! A must- it’s John Travolta and Olivia Newton John- R.I.P. Olivia ❤️🙌🏻❤️. Also her songs “Soul Kiss” and “ A little more love” are great- Bass lines and that bit of funk to them- Highly recommend! I’m not a musical fan either.. Saturday Night Fever movie is my jam!🙂

If you really want to blow Brad's mind on how a musical should sound, almost anything on the "Tommy" album from The Who. It was made into a movie with members of The Who; Tina Turner; Sir Elton John, Jack Nicholson; Ann Margaret and many others.

Grease was the "High School Musical" of the 70's. The term "Grease" came from the name given to a group of people (mostly male) in the 50's called "Greasers". They were mostly teenagers and young adults who were into motorcycles and cars and kept their hair slicked back using a pomade that made their hair look greasy. Blue jeans and leather jackets were the stereotypical outfits worn by Greasers.
