When they asked Jimi Hendrix how it felt to be the best guitar player and he said something like "Why don't you ask Terry Kath." I heard that same story with Jimi saying some other names but, I would think it was Kath he mentioned.

@RedBud315 Jimi Hendrix was once asked what it was like being the world's greatest guitar player. He replied, “I don't know, go ask Roy Clark”. He said the same thing about Rory Gallagher and Billy Gibbons. I'm guessing the answer had a lot to do with how he was feeling or who he was listening to on that day. Terry Kath is definitely criminally underrated though. An absolutely phenomenal player.

This song is just a small part of a multi part suite called Ballet for a Girl in Bucchannon. You really should listen to the whole thing. It was written by the trombone player, Jim Pankow. The guy singing this is Terry Kath, the original guitar player who passed away from an accidental gunshot wound to the head. If you want to hear a happy sounding song, you should check out another song from this album called Fancy Colours. I think it has the happiest sounding groove I've ever heard!

You need to listen to the whole suet, Ballet for a Girl in Buchanan, to get a feel for the whole journey. "Make me Smile" is the single they released that combines the first and final piece of the suet. They also had a hit single with "Colour my World" which is one of the middle pieces. These were guys in their mid to late 20's writing and performing this unique music.
@timothyweers80543 күн бұрын
This is actually a condensed version of the song. If you get the original album it is from, it practically takes up the entire side. It starts off with Makes Me Smile, goes into Color My World, then filters into 3 more songs before ending with Now more than ever. You can also get this version on the Group Portrait album set. Herb Alpert And The Tijuana Brass has a great range with the trumpet brass section. The singing he does using the trumpet is amazing.

Start to finish, Chicago Transit Authority, a freakin' DOUBLE -LP as their debut, was insanely good! The one controversial track was Free Form Guitar, Terry screwing around with different techniques, feedback galore. Sounded like a lot of noise to most, but he was also experimenting with finger tapping the fretboard like some kid named Eddie Van Halen would do years later. Introduction, Poem 58, and Liberation. THOSE 3 tracks are a MUST.

song written by their trombonist, James Pankow, and lead vocal by Terry Kath whom was often referred to as the white Ray Charles (lower tone gravelly voice with lots of soul). This song is part of a 13-minute grouping of songs referred to as "A Ballet for a girl in Buchanon", on their 2nd album titled Chicago II - all the songs written by Pankow. The Bass Player - Peter Cetera. also one of the bands 3 song writers with a wonderful tenor voice. Long and deep road road with this group, my husband's favorite. Bes years are from '69-'78. If you like horns check out Questions 67 & 68. Many other great songs: Dialogue parts 1 & 2, Saturday in the Park, Beginnings, Feeling stronger every day (powerful bass), and Old Days - among their best work

Danny Saraphine was and is one the most under rated drummers. Unlike drummers that consistently make the lists of "Great Drummers", Danny did not need to sit behind a kit of a gazillion drums & cymbals. Watch the video of them playing at Tanglewood, and Danny is "killing it" with basically a "Starter Kit" - Bass, Snare, Floor Tom, 1 or 2 Baby Toms, a Crash, Ride, & High-Hat Cymbal.

Great reaction! Nice to see someone who actually knows what they're listening to. In my opinion, Chicago is the most eclectic band I've heard... three lead singers : Terry Kath (guitar) Peter Cetera (bass) and Robert Lamm (keyboards) but Lee Loughnane (trumpet) and James Pankow (trombone) have also sung lead on a few songs. They do everything from heavy funk (Sing a Mean Tune Kid, Chicago III) to ballads with strings (If You Leave Me Now, Chicago X), but if I had to recommend some tracks, they wouldn't be the mainstream ones like 25 or 6 to 4, Make Me Smile, Saturday In The Park, Beginning etc. There's no doubt they are classics, but everyone reacts to them (specially 25 or 6 to 4)... Chicago is so much more. If you want to see how eclectic Chicago is, listen to Woman Don't Want To Love Me and Byblos from Chicago VII... you wouldn't think it was the same band. Dialogue Parts 1 and 2 (Chicago V) is kinda mainstream and show cases Terry and Peter's vocals. After Terry Kath died, things became a lot more syrupy and Peter Cetera-centric, which, to me, is less appealing. They still had some good songs, but they lost their soul, and became overproduced. Anyway, everyone has their faves.😊

This is part of a seven-movement suite titled "Ballet for a Girl in Buchannon", written by trombone player James Pankow, appearing on Chicago's second album. James wrote it for a girl in West Virginia he was dating at the time. The record label at the time of the release in 1970 joined together the opening and closing movements, "Make Me Smile" and "Now More Than Ever" (a reprise of "Make Me Smile") to release a single of "Make Me Smile" that sounded as a complete song. You should listen to the entire suite, which also includes Terry Kath's lead vocal on "Colour My World": kzbin.info/www/bejne/rpiwZauJfribj9k
