Bowie was constantly evolving. His appearance, his personal style, his music were always changing, growing, shedding the past and keeping three steps ahead of the future. He created the template the Madonna and others adopted and followed. This song was co-written with John Lennon, who also sang backing vocals. Bowie was the ultimate collaborator. He worked with many musicians throughout his career who influenced his sound. There is no wrong place to start, although I think it makes more sense to approach his catalog by period. This album was from his "Plastic Soul" period, which followed the Glam era and preceded the Berlin era. Other songs from this era you should check out include "Young Americans", "Right", and "Sweet Thing/Candidate/Sweet Thing". Or step back into the glam era and try "Time", "Lady Stardust", or "Five Years." I wouldn't jump into his final album, however, until you have experienced more of his earlier work.

Dude.. Just stop... Stop trying to force som modern ideology/agenda on to Bowie, he explained multiple times throughout his career why he did that, there's countless of interviews with him on youtube. He did it because he was actually extremely shy and very nervous when he had to perform, he felt like when he dressed up in these over the top fictional personas, he felt like he wasn't himself and all of his nerves dissapeared.

The song is specifically about the combined effects of great fame and cocaine. In the 70's, cocaine was all through the music business; everybody did it. It led to huge burnouts, stars getting arrested, scandals, deaths, etc. That's what the song is about. It's sounds fabulous with its funky beat and creative vocals, but underneath it's about the illusion, the way one dreams about fame and then discovers that it's really a hellpit after the honeymoon wear off. Bowie crashed really, really hard and then took years to work his way back up to a truly sustainable creativity. Fame was written during that period of transition, just after the Berlin years (which were his lowest point), when he was assessing his life and feeling out where to go in his music. He took the funk route and changed his persona entirely to match his new vibe. :)

A really good follow-up to this is "Golden Years" (for David Bowie's funkiness). Bowie tried many different styles, and was able to pull each one off successfully. A truly fascinating artist, well worth your time in exploring.

Bowie had a lot of range and eras where he changed himself and output. From the Ziggy / glam era 'Moonage daydream' is something you would like. This is the 'Thin white duke' era, Heroes would be a good one to react to from Berlin era. For pop era either 'Lets dance' or 'Fashion' (the longer studio version).

Great song in 75. John Lennon singing along. Awesome stuff. Bowie is the total chameleon when it comes to music genres. He's never been confined by it. Made him very unique.

This was his soul album. He always was a musical chameleon and changed both his music and his image from album to album.
