Dean Martin was part a the “Rat Pack” which also includes Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr. , Joey Bishop and Peter Lawrence. They were all famous in their own right . Peter Lawford was married to JFK's sister so he was brother in law to the President of the USA. There are many videos of Sinatra, Martin and Davis performing together as they were the "singers" of the group. Bishop was a comedian and Lawford was an actor.

Dean Martin may be the best entertainer in American culture history. He mastered it all: movies, radio, television. He could act in comedies, dramas; he could dance. And growing up in Ohio, he was quite a young boxer. He was a class act all the way that was apparently a nice guy that never took himself too seriously. 👍

I'm only 57 but I was lucky To See Dean Martin in 1991 in Vegas. A night I'll always remember. Also was lucky enough to see Frank Sinatra in 1985 at the Universal Amphitheater in LA. Only regret never seeing Sammy Davis Jr. live. I was a fan of them in high school when NOBODY me age thought they were cool. Then about 15 years later EVERYONE my age claimed to be life long fans of the Rat Pack. When Dean Martin died on Christmas day 1995, I had messages on my answering machine from friends in high school who I hadn't seen in years offering me condolences because they remembered how big a fan I was.

I had 10 or 12 Dean LPs before I bought my first Elvis single. When Elvis first came into Sun Records he was asked who he sounded like. He replied ungrammatically "I don't sound like nobody." When pressed though, he confessed that Dean was a favorite. They say that Elvis is the King of Cool, but Dean Martin was. Elvis even said so. Dean was born into an Italian family in Steubenville, Ohio in 1917. He and Jerry Lewis paired up in 1946 and stayed together for 10 years making films and TV shows. Dean couldn't stand the movies or Jerry's attitude. I used to watch his program in the late 60s and early 70s. He was smooth. He was calm, cool and collected. Frank got nervous sometimes before a show and Dean would say something like "It's only singing." He did just shy of 1,000 songs I'd say. Here's few to start off with : 1) Return To Me 2) Love Me, Love Me 3) Volare 4) On An Evening In Roma 5) That's Amore 6) Everybody Loves Somebody Sometime (His theme song) 7) Memories Are Made Of This 8) I'd Cry Like A Baby 9) Somewhere There's A Someone 10) Sway (I did that one in China a few times. Strictly amateur) 11) The Door Is Still Open To My Heart

I have enjoyed Dean since the 1960s and it was so fabulous to see you have the same reactions to his music as I do. He was not only a talented singer, but a marvelous actor whose "Dino" personality was a gimmick He had many convinced J&B was in his glass on stage but he gave his trick away when he admitted in interviews that Martinelli's apple juice was in his glass. Thank you so much for bringing the swinging music of the 1960s to a whole new generation. Hugs!

I would suggest that you check out some of Dean's celebrity roasts from back in the day. Ronald Elkins Or try watching some of Deans Variety Shows from the 1960s which are available on You Tube, which ran for a total of nine years. Dean was known as the King of Cool and had just about every entertainer of the era as guest stars during that time. He was best friends (or ‘pallies’) with Frank Sinatra for more than 50 years, and Frank often appeared with him on the show. One of the best was the Christmas show of (I think) 1968, which featured both their families, including a total of 10 children between them (Franks 3 and Deans 7, many of whom followed their Dads into show business) and also Deans wife Jeannie.

Dean Martin is one of the main guys in the 1960 version of Ocean's 11. There's no singing, but it is great. Sinatra and his pack wanted to film in Vegas, because Vegas is the place to drink and gamble. And it's all a legit business expense. :)

This was my generation, mostly dead & gone now. We used to dance to this kind of music in high school, & I still love it. Dean Martin is one of my abiding favorites. There were also some great "girl singers" back in the day as well. You might check out George Clooney's aunt Rosemary Clooney, singing a song she hated & didn't want to sing, but which was a big hit. It's a bit silly, as the title, "Come On'a My House" might indicate, but fun. I'll dig through my record collection & see what else I can come up with. We also listened to a lot of black singers, who had equal space in the jukebox, before listeners got all bent out of shape over the color of an artist's skin. (I might have more to say about that later.) One I particularly remember was Billy Eckstine. He had what one might call a velvet voice, & sang "I Apologize" & more. Then there was Nat King Cole. Listen to his "Unforgettable." These were not swinging tunes like the one you played by Dean Martin, but some really lovely music.

Dean did a lot of things, but his fame came when he teamed up with Jerry Lewis and formed the comedy duo Martin and Lewis. They were the most popular comedy duo of their time rivaling Abbot and Costello and Laurel and Hardy in all time popularity. Their careers together only lasted 10 years and they had a bitter break up. Jerry, after 30 years said he forgave Deano, but Dean never really forgave Jerry. After the break up Dean became a member of Sinatra's "Rat Pack" and they patrolled nightclubs from Vegas to New York, performing, gambling, and partying. Others in the Pack were Sammy Davis Jr, Peter Lawford, Joey Bishop and Buddy Hackett. Peter married a Kennedy and was later involved in the death of Marylin Monroe. Time for you to listen to some Sammy Davis Jr. doing "What Kind Of Fool Am I", "I Gotta Be Me", and "Somethin' Gotta Give". Anything but his big hits, "Candyman" or "Mr Bojangles", both of which really don't show how well that guy could sing and dance.
