The song "Rechenka" (affectionate from the word "river") is a Russian folk ritual wedding song. There is a version that this song appeared before Christianity, and since early Christianity and paganism were closely intertwined, there are many versions of this song. It tells how an orphan girl comes to the river and prays to the spirits of nature. The song is about how my mother, father and brothers were killed by enemies, there is no one to take care of her. The river in Ancient Russia was considered the border between the world of the living and the dead. You hear an ominous whisper, it's the spirit of her late mother responding to the girl's crying. There are about 30 variants of this song, but the content of each of the variants is based on the sad appeals of the orphan bride to her deceased parents, asking them for "blessings" and help for marriage, for family, to strangers. There are other versions of this song, where the heroine appeals to her brothers and even to her parents with a call to return to earth in the form of a bird to her native home. At the end of the song, the girl sails away to a strange tribe, to a strange family. The roots of the song go back to ancient Russia, it is a very, very ancient folk folklore.

Old Russian Folk song. In their folklore a river is the dividing line between the living and dead. In a nut shell it's about an orphan bride who goes to the river seeking blessing for her wedding. She tells the river of her sadness over it's constant flowing without acknowledgment. The people coming out of the water are river spirits. The raspy whisper was her mother. A singing teacher once commented on this song that if he wrote down all the singing techniques Diana uses here, he would have a list of all the singing techniques. The song is about an orphan who is about to get married and goes to the river to talk to her parents and ask for their blessing. The river is the connection to the world of the dead. The song is called Rechenka. It is about an orphan bride that is telling her woes to the River. - You River, my little river, you flow but you don’t cradle. The river answers- You child, my little child, why are you sitting and not smiling? The child answers- My girlfriends, my dear ones, I have no reason to be joyful. Our yard is full of horses and our house is full of guests. (This is the part where she is beaming. And then a voice slide that starts bright and hopeful and gradually slides down turning into a moan, a cry.) I have no mother, I have no father, I have no one to give me blessings (and then she howls like a wounded animal. After calming down, she turns back to the river again as to the only close soul though not a mother). You river, my little river, you flow but you don’t cradle…. What she performed here was nothing short of a witchcraft!!! This is her interpretation, this was not the original version. And her personal tragedy makes the experience all that much heartbreaking!!! She is a forest nymph, a galaxy, the Mother Earth incarnated!!

I was very slow in realizing what it was I was hearing. Then I heard this and boom it all hit me like a ton of bricks and her passion for her music and performance moved me to tears much like it has right now. The song about a girl who is lamenting (to the river) that she’s got nobody to attend her wedding; let alone give her away, and the river (between life and death) doesn’t answer. The water simply continues to flow and roll by: like life. This is what her hand gestures were also signaling. The fact that in real life Diana was an orphan makes this song all the more poignant as it is a powerful reminder of her own reality. She sings the words that she has nobody, the camera cuts to the judges who turn and look at each other stunned.. which is why they’ve seemingly forgotten to hit their green buttons. The fact she can sing this song without breaking down into tears shows her maturity and professionalism beyond her young age.
